真的有因果嗎?

有個「寒輝」和尚,他是個非常精進修行,每天誦經念佛,持戒都做得很好的大師兄,有一次他離開寺廟,到了鎮上,經過市集,突然聞到一股香氣撲鼻的臘肉香,因為他從來沒吃過肉,禁不起這個誘惑,口水都流下來了,就想:「哎呀,我就吃這麼一次,我今天跟佛菩薩請個假,就吃這麼一次,吃完了以後,滿足的回到寺院繼續修行,所有師兄弟們都不知道他破了戒律。

沒多久「寒輝」的身上、手上、腿上,全身突然冒出了18個爛瘡,哎呀,不得了了,這些大瘡又大又疼,疼得無法穿衣服,一穿衣服就疼,就只能把衣服揭開,讓大家看他的爛瘡,大瘡又爛又臭,所有的人都不敢接近他,這讓他痛苦不堪。

這天「寒輝」和尚在睡夢中,看見了18個人來跟他索命,寒輝說:「我一生精進修行,也沒做過壞事,您們是不是討債找錯人啦?」18個人回:「你前世是我們的將領,我們是跟著你手下的士兵,當時我們一共有20個人,當時20個人之中有2個人違反軍紀,強姦了村莊裡的婦女,但是你不分青紅皂白,竟然把我們20個人全都給殺了。

你不明就理,讓我們18個人枉死,所以這個怨恨很深,我們找你找了200年,終於在這一世找到你,可是因為你在寺廟裡,每天吃齋念佛,持戒修行,你身邊的護法神讓我們無法靠近,我們無法找你索命,只好留在這兒等待機會。
正好那天你在市集上,聞到狗肉的香味破戒吃了肉,你一破戒護法神就離開了你,我們就馬上找上了你,所以這18個瘡,就是我們來找你索命的。」

「寒輝」和尚聽了非常懺悔,他跪在佛前深深的懺悔,祈求他們的原諒。那麼這18個人就講,說我們原諒不了你,因為你的功德不夠,我們無法解開這個怨氣,但是因為你是個修行人,我們給你3年的時間,3年以後我們再來找你。

後來「寒輝」和尚身上18個爛瘡真的好了,3年以後18個大毒瘡再一次復發,「寒輝」和尚很快就死了。

所謂:種瓜得瓜,種豆得豆,自然界的循環,就是因果。
我們若能明白自然界的道理,除去無明,就不會種下無明的種子。

Does the concept of cause and effect really exist?

There was a monk named Han Hui who was very diligent in chanting and also disciplined in self-restraint. One day, as he was strolling along the streets in the city, he caught an irresistible aroma of preserved pork. As he had never eaten pork, the irresistible temptation caused him to crave for it. He thought to himself, “Why don’t I seek a one-time exemption and give myself a break from not eating pork just this once. I can always make it up by my chanting when I return to the temple and nobody will know that I have broken my restraint.”

Soon after his return to the temple, he developed serious skin breakouts at 18 points all over his body, hands and legs. The sore skin breakouts were so large and painful that he could not have his clothes on. He had to expose part of his body especially the affected areas. The skin condition worsened so much that the affected areas started to give out a foul smell. Many people stayed away from him and avoided being near him. This made him very sad.

One night, Monk Han Hui had a dream. He dreamt that 18 men were trying to take his life. He pleaded to the 18 men “I have been a good practicing monk, and have never committed bad deeds. Why do you want to take my life? Have you identified the wrong person?” The 18 men replied unanimously “In our past life, you were our leader and we were your subordinates. There were 20 of us. During an incident when 2 of us committed a crime of rape in a village, instead of punishing the 2 culprits, you killed all of us without hesitation or inquiry!”

“Your killing of 18 innocent men was unfair. The resulting hatred was so deep and it took 200 years for us to find you to seek justice. In this life of yours, you were diligent in your monastery practices in chanting and self-restraint, so you were well protected by the Dharma protectors. There was no opportunity for us to get close to killing you. We watched for every possible opportunity to take your life. Just then, the day when you broke your discipline by not refraining from eating meat, the Dharma protectors no longer shielded you, that gave us the golden opportunity to strike. These 18 sores manifested painfully on your body.”

Monk Han Hui was deeply remorseful. He knelt and repented in front of Buddha, seeking forgiveness from the 18 men. However, the 18 men could not forgive him then as they felt that he had not accumulated sufficient good deeds to dissolve the hatred. However, since Monk Han Hui was a practicing monk, the 18 men mitigated his plea with a 3-year delay in killing him. They would look for him again 3 years later.

After some time, Monk Han Hui recovered from the 18 sores. However, he had a relapse 3 years later and finally died.

When one sows melon seeds, one harvests melon; when one plants beans, one gets beans. Therefore “We shall reap what we sow”.
In accordance with the Law of Nature, this is known as “Cause and Effect”. With this understanding, one should not be ignorant of the choice of seeds to sow in order to expect fruits of goodness.

「在修法的過程中,遇到特別不想修的時候該怎麼辦呢?」

答:
比如有人說:有一段時間,我就是不想修大禮拜。
.
其实這樣的放棄和討厭的心理,說明你前面的功課做得很好,想放弃不修的想法都是考驗。

在很多年前我就講過,修行的過程分幾個階段。
一開始沒進門修行的時候,全部是懷疑;
再來是修進門的第一個階段是最快樂的,就好像自己到了天堂;
但在天堂之後就是地獄,那是第二個階段,而這個地獄就叫做昏沉。
.
為什麼第一個階段叫作快樂、第二個階段叫作昏沉呢?
.
昏沉有幾種反應,第一種就是對修行沒有了先前的那種快樂和刺激的感受,和之前的體會都不一樣。還有呢,就是開始想放棄了,說「我不修這個法了」;再接下來是討厭,討厭這個法,還同時對師父和對這個法產生不信任感,這些都是在這個昏沉階段中必然會發生的現象。

那怎麼辦呢?我要給大家指條明路的話,就是:就像定好了要登山,無論是下雨了、下雪了、刮大風了,我一樣去登,我定好的事情我從不會改變。應該培養這種習慣,這個習慣就是堅持,只因為有了這個堅持的習慣,你就能成功。

Question: What should we do if we suddenly encounter a strong feeling to give up on our practice?

Response:
For instance, you may encounter periods when you feel reluctant to practice the Full Prostration. The notion of giving up and the self-resistance that you face is in fact an affirmation that you have been practicing very well, and thus the thoughts to give up is a test of your resolution.

Many years ago, I have shared that there are several stages in the meditation journey.
Prior to taking the first step into the practice, one feels doubtful;
After one steps into the practice, at the first stage, he experiences happiest, just like in heaven.
However, after heaven, the second stage is hell –- and this “hell” is also known as feeling “dazed”.

Why is the first stage identified as “happiness”, and the second stage as “dazed”?

There are variations to feeling “dazed” at this stage, the first of which is the lack of the prior feeling of euphoria and stimulation in the practice as in the initial stage. In addition, one starts to give up, saying “I’m not going to continue this practice..” following which annoyance sets in. At this point, the annoyance extends to the practice, developing into distrust of the master and the dharma. These are typical signs during the “dazed” phase and are inevitable.

What can one do? To indicate a clear path to you, I would say: just as you’d promised to scale the mountain, regardless of rain, snow, or gale, you should stay focused and proceed as you’d promised and not change your mind. Cultivate this habit to persevere on because with this determination, one would succeed.

我曾在網路上看過一個街頭實驗的視頻,是來自熱心網友的推薦,內容在講述:塞錢給睡著的乞丐,看乞丐會如何使用這筆財錢。

這個視頻裡有一名睡在人行道上的乞丐,在醒來後發現身邊有路人施捨的錢財,就趕緊拿著錢跑到商店和藥店,買了藥、食物、生活必需品,就送去給另外一名老乞丐。
.
而拍攝視頻的幕後人員也跟進調查,最後瞭解到這兩個乞丐之間並不認識,都僅是流浪之人。這名乞丐已經窮到身無分文了,但他在得到這筆意外之財後,最先想到的是去救濟幫助比他更弱、更差的那個人——比他年長又生病的老乞丐。

「愛心不分貧富。」——這名乞丐的善行真是了不起,真的是一位菩薩降世!

I watched an online video recently which was shared by a netizen. It is a video of a social experiment conducted on the streets. In the video, a sum of money was quietly placed next to a beggar while he was sleeping on the streets. The objective was to see what the beggar would do with the money.

When the beggar woke up, he saw the money lying next to him. Thinking that it was given by some kind-hearted passer-by, he took the money and rushed to a store and pharmacy. With the money, he bought food, medication and some daily necessities. Instead of keeping the items for himself, he carried his new purchases to another elderly beggar and gave all the stuff to him.

The folks behind this social experiment carried out some investigations and found that the two beggars did not know each other. The first beggar was penniless, yet his first thought upon finding the money was to help the elderly and sick beggar – somebody whom he deemed to be even more in need than him.

This simple act of kindness was both remarkable and real. The beggar was a true living Bodhisattva, someone who was the epitome of Buddha’s teachings.

Buddha taught us to be grateful and contented as we are blessed with the wealth, belongings, relationships and love that we need. Besides being grateful, we must also learn to give to those who are in need. Being contented is a mentality, just like giving. Who should we give to? To those who needed help most.

With the money, he bought food, medication and some daily necessities. Instead of keeping the items for himself, he carried his new purchases to another elderly beggar and gave all the stuff to him.

The folks behind this social experiment carried out some investigations and found that the two beggars did not know each other. The first beggar was penniless, yet his first thought upon finding the money was to help the elderly and sick beggar – somebody whom he deemed to be even more in need than him.

This simple act of kindness was both remarkable and real. The beggar was a true living Bodhisattva, someone who was the epitome of Buddha’s teachings.

Buddha taught us to be grateful and contented as we are blessed with the wealth, belongings, relationships and love that we need. Besides being grateful, we must also learn to give to those who are in need. Being contented is a mentality, just like giving. Who should we give to? To those who needed help most.

一般人都「捨不得」,無論你多麼相信佛陀。佛說「捨去吧,四大皆空」,你能捨嗎?一般放不下。拿你的錢財去供養修行人、或者布施給更加貧苦的人,你捨得嗎?你有一千萬你能拿出兩萬到十萬塊錢,你都覺得自己是一個了不起的大菩薩了。

儘管我們理解這些道理,但應用的時候還會捨不得。也正因為一個捨不得,所以也就得不到生命中那些我們所說的不可思議的智慧、能力、財富、榮耀等等。所以我們還需要從捨得入手。

Generally, people are less incline toward giving, regardless of their faith in the Buddha. As the Buddha said, “Learn to let go, as all the four elements (earth, water, fire, air) are empty and illusory. Can you do it? The majority will struggle. Even when the material possessions are for the benefits of faith practitioners or for the needy, are you willing to give? If you have 10 million dollars, and give away twenty to a hundred thousand dollars, you would consider yourself a great Bodhisattva.

Although we understand these teachings, when it comes to practice, there is the reluctance to give. It is this reluctance that is obscuring us from the miraculous blessings of life – wisdom, ability, wealth, glory and so on. Thus, we would need to start from the willingness to give.

有一對小夫妻一起來找我。太太說:「我要跟他離婚。」我問:「離婚怎麼跑我這兒來了?你們結婚證書也不是我發的。」這時,先生說:「她真要離,我也沒有辦法。到您這來問問您怎麼看?」其實,他們想離,但是心裡還是有點戀戀不捨,想找我給評評理。

太太說:「他經常不洗澡、不刷牙,特別髒。我一天刷四五遍牙呢。」

我說:「你每天閒著不工作,光刷牙?」
.
先生說:「其實我也不想離,我也想包容她。有一次她做好了飯,問我好不好吃。我說還可以,但是下次能不能放鹽進去啊(原來菜裡沒放鹽)。第二天我下班回家,太太就煮了一碗麵自己在那吃。我問:『我的飯呢?』她說:『你不是嫌我做得不好吃嗎?』 太太從此不給我做飯吃,這一僵持就是一個月,之後矛盾就更加激化起來了。」

How do we sustain a blissful and happy marriage?
Let me share with you a story to initiate some thoughts.

A young couple came to see me. The wife said: “I want to divorce him.” I asked: “What has it got to do with me? Your marriage certificate is not issued by me.” Hearing this, the husband said: ”If she really wanted a divorce, there is nothing I can do. So we came to seek your advice.” Although both of them wanted a divorce, deep in their hearts, they still have strong feelings for one another. They wanted me to evaluate who is right and who is wrong.

The wife complained: “He does not bother to bathe and brush his teeth regularly. He is so dirty. I brush my teeth four to five times a day.”

I retorted: “You have so much free time? Otherwise, how could you brush your teeth so often?”

The husband continued: “ Actually I do not want a divorce, I tried to accommodate her. Once, she cooked a meal and sought my comments. I merely told her the food was not too bad, and suggested that she add a little salt into the dish next time (apparently, she forgot to add salt). When I reached home after work next day, my wife was eating a bowl of noodles she had cooked for herself. When I asked her: “Where is my share?” She replied: “I thought you complained on my cooking?” Since that fateful day, she stopped cooking for me entirely. This cold war lasted for a month and subsequently the conflicts worsened.”

Personally, I felt this female disciple was too picky; secondly, she loved herself too much. What do you think? Can this couple get along well and enjoy a blissful marriage? Not likely since they cared too much about themselves and are too self-centered. With such spouse, life is bound to be torturous and full of suffering.

In reality, what started as a very small matter got blown out of proportion, which created problems and conflicts. They argued and quarreled daily and now they are contemplating a divorce.

If we want to enjoy a sweet and happy marriage, shouldn’t we show greater consideration towards our spouse and learn to be more tolerant?

大暑──恬淡平和,安度苦夏。

大暑,代表一年中最炎熱時期到來了,是夏季的最後一個節氣,太陽到達黃經120°,今年是在陽曆7月22日。
.
大暑前後不但氣溫達到一年中的最高,悶熱程度也達到頂峰,中醫認為此時是濕氣最重的時候,容易出現食欲下降、口舌生瘡、腹瀉嘔吐、大便黏膩等症狀,所以此時養生要注意「避濕」。有幾種方式可以達到「避濕」的作用:一是適當鍛煉,使身體時常排汗,加速濕氣排出體外。二是不要貪涼睡地板,因為空氣中的水分和空調冷氣會自動沉降在低處,睡地板容易造成濕邪入侵。三是少吃冰的冷飲,以免影響腸胃消化吸收功能,降低免疫力。

大暑高溫酷熱,人容易動肝火,時常會出現莫名的無精打采、心煩意亂的情緒。唐朝大詩人白居易在《銷夏》詩中就寫到:「何以銷煩暑,端居一院中。眼前無長物,窗下有清風。熱散由心靜,涼生為室空。此時身自得,難更與人同。」意思是說,住在蔭涼的院子裡,屋裡少放一些雜七雜八的東西,打開窗戶,納來徐徐涼風,把心放平和,靜靜地體會「心靜自然涼」的意境,這是不是有點像菩提禪修的《清淨觀想法》呢?

當煩躁的情緒出現時,不妨嘗試修習《清淨觀想法》,藉由觀想讓我們能在這大暑時節享受那份清淨與自在。

“Major Heat” ── Tranquil and Peaceful Mindset is the Remedy for “Major Heat” in Summer

The “Major Heat” represents the hottest period of the year. It is the summer’s last solar term, when the sun reaches 120° on the celestial longitude. This year, it falls on July 22 in the Gregorian calendar.

Around this “Major Heat” period, temperature and humidity reach the peak for the year. Chinese doctors believe this is the time when it is most “damp” resulting in symptoms such as loss of appetite, mouth sores, diarrhea, vomiting, and sticky stools, etc. Therefore, one should “avoid dampness” to maintain good health. Some of the ways to do so includes: First, engage in suitable exercise to allow perspiration to expel “dampness” from the body. Second, avoid lying on the cold ground as moisture in the cold air and air from the air-conditioning system will automatically sink and settle near the ground, resulting in “dampness” that could enter the body. Third, consume less cold drinks, so as not to affect digestion and the gastrointestinal functions that reduce immunity.

During the “Major Heat”, it is easy for tempers to flare, and often there are inexplicable listless-ness, frustration and sense of distraction. The Tang Dynasty great poet, Bai Juyi in his “Experience Summer” poem wrote, “allay the summer lethargy, stay in a courtyard; ensure no clutter in your sight, let in the breeze by the window; dispel the heat with tranquility of the mind, enjoy serenity in a spartan room; relish this instance, with a wholly different mindset”. It suggests that one stays at a shady courtyard, keeps the house uncluttered, opens the windows to the soothing cool breeze, settles the mind at ease and quietude, then peacefully revel in the tranquility that a calm mind brings. Doesn’t this resembles our practice of the Meditation of Purity in Bodhi Meditation?

When the irritable mood manifests, we can practice the Meditation of Purity. Through its visualizations, we would relish the tranquility, and be at ease to appreciate this “Major Heat”.

A Miracle for chronic insomnia, within 3 days.

Insomnia refers to poor quality sleep disorder, prevalent amongst city dwellers. Although it is not life threatening, it can lead to mental breakdown and affects the ability to lead a normal life.

Prolonged insomnia may cause illnesses or aggravates existing health conditions like short temper, depression, poor memory, giddiness and tinnitus, high blood pressure, dry eyes, irritation, vulnerable to fever and flu, heart palpitations, body aches, hair loss, even obesity, etc.

Shuyin Chen suffered from chronic insomnia for the past 10 years. She was tormented by restless sleep and had difficulty falling asleep. For the first time in 10 years, she experiences the joy of waking up naturally. Her happiness is obvious to all who sees her.

My chronic insomnia of 10 years dissipated after practicing Bodhi
Meditation.

My name is Shuyin Chen and I am 48 years old.
I suffered from chronic insomnia for the past 10 years.
Every night, I would feel very exhausted by 7pm and would need a short nap to rest.
Normally, I would be awakened before 8pm and thought I had slept for a very long time.
My sleeping problem worsened in March last year.
I would lie in bed the whole night, tossing and turning, till dawn.

I cannot be caught wet in the rain.
This inability to be exposed to rain affected me since more than 15 years
ago.
Not even a light drizzle ….
If I got wet from the rain, I would suffer from headaches, followed by flu-like
symptoms. I would feel very hot suddenly and the next moment, very cold.
During such period,
I would wrap myself like a mummy at home;
layered with sweaters, long pants and socks,
covered under a blanket in bed.
As a result, my husband did not want to sleep in the same room as me.

I knew Bodhi Meditation from my cousin who joined in the last few months of 2015.
I came to try Energy Bagua for a day and felt my sleep pattern improved after that.
Hence, I signed up for the 8.5-day Health & Happiness Retreat on 24th December.
During these 8.5 days, my body became warm and I discovered that I was not so sensitive to cold.
When I practiced “The Meditation of Greater Illumination”, my body started perspiring.
During the wheel mudra, when I circled my hands around my stomach, I continued to sweat.
Towards the end of the practice, while breathing in and out,
the wind in my stomach was dispelled from my body.
This went on for some time.
By the end of “Ah Mi Te”,
I felt energetic.
Since then, I practice daily “The Meditation of Greater Illumination” at home.
When I am in a rush for time, I practice once, the 30-minute version. If I have time, I practice 2 sessions followed by “The Meditation of Purity”.
My entire body felt comfortable and relaxed by the third day of my class.
A miracle happened – I managed to sleep well for one whole night!
And I was able to fall asleep shortly upon going to bed…. like within 30 minutes, I was asleep deeply.
Now, I sleep well, wake up naturally and feel very fresh upon waking up.

Finally being able to sleep till I wake up naturally, after 10 years, makes me very happy indeed.
It is, as if, I had found something dear that I lost.
I can finally experience what others feel!
I am really very happy!

My friend commented I look much better and more radiant.Perhaps I was too pale previously.
I told him I go to Bodhi Meditation, to learn and practice meditation.
I can now lead a normal life and my family is also becoming more harmonious.
My husband no longer sleeps in the living room now.
Bodhi Meditation brings me good health and happiness.
My spirits are high.

「不吃奶類、肉類、糖類。」

大家是否還記得前些時候,我在這兒提出的幾項健康倡議?你(妳)開始實用在生活裡了嗎??

也許美食當前,不吃會對不起自己,但是偶而也該善待自己的身體,因為健康是無價,健康最重要,擁有了健康,生命最美麗。

從今天開始,讓我們一起來完成這項健康的《三無月》吧!! 健康口號一起來:

「要做到三無,健康又長壽。」

健康很好說,我的健康建議。
1.牛奶不能說的秘密,牛奶是給小牛喝的,成年人如果食用多了牛奶,必然會成為未來疾病的隱患。

2.少吃肉既健康又環保,吃肉=吃毒?

3.我的健康建議,吃飯以外不吃糖。

(3 ‘High’s refer to High Cholesterol, High Blood Pressure and High Blood Sugar)
Can you recall, sometime ago, I gave some tips on how to be healthy? Have you incorporated them into your lifestyle?

It may be difficult to resist delicious food as it seems that we are not fair to ourselves. However, we must be mindful to treat our body well as health is priceless and of utmost importance. With good health, life is beautiful.

From today on, let us try to work on《Say ‘No’ to these 3 food choices for a month》! Let’s shout aloud our Health Motto: ‘No’ to milk, meat and sugar! Choose health and longevity!

Here are some of my health advice:
1. The hidden secret of milk; milk is meant for calves. If we consume too much milk, this is likely to be harmful to us.

2. Consuming less meat is healthy and environmentally friendly. Consuming meat product = taking poison?

3. My recommendations for good health; outside of mealtime, stay away from sugar.
