佛陀滅度若干年後,印度出現了一位阿育王。這個人很能征戰,就像中國的秦始皇,他有一位妃子,是一位非常慈悲的佛教徒,一直在用慈悲啟發他:作為君王應該先有仁慈之道,因為仁慈、因為慈悲才能讓大家恭敬你、愛戴你、樂意跟著你走,你不能用殺戮的方式來對待子民。

阿育王就問:「你這些方法從哪兒來的?」

她說:「都是當年佛陀說的。」
.
阿育王說:「你們這個佛所教的就是管理之道啊,尤其是對做君王的人來說,佛法就是統領民眾的最好方法。」

於是,阿育王開始行慈悲之道——以慈悲、寬容之心行使君王的權利,同時發願:修建八萬四千座佛塔供奉佛陀舍利,並派出很多位僧人使者,將佛法以及這些舍利弘揚到全世界去。其中有幾位就往東方走到了中國,像中國法門寺、南京大報恩寺那些舍利,都是從印度傳到中國來弘揚佛法的。

中國唯一的女皇帝——武則天,也因為接到了佛舍利,才修了洛陽龍門石窟。因此,佛法不僅是個人提升境界與修行的方法,好好善用也能成為君王之道。

Many years after the Buddha’s parinirvana, there was a King Ashoka of India. He was very capable in warfare, much like China’s Emperor Qin Shi Huang. He had a concubine who was an extraordinarily compassionate Buddhist. The lady conscientiously enlightened Ashoka with compassionate Dharma, such as, “.. a King should be benevolent; being benevolent and compassionate, he would enjoy respect from the masses, who would then readily follow and support him; the masses do not yield to oppression and indiscriminate killing.”

King Ashoka asked, “Where did you learn this?”

She explained, “This was expounded by Buddha during his time.”

Ashoka then exclaimed, “These teachings by the Buddha are in fact management principles, in particular for a sovereign, the Dharma is the best approach to lead the people.”

Following that, King Ashoka took on a compassionate path – exercising his rule as a sovereign with compassion and benevolence. At the same time, he vowed to build 84,000 shrines to worship the relics of the Buddha, and initiated a global campaign led by several Buddhist missionaries to spread the Dharma and the Buddha’s relics worldwide. Amongst the missionaries, some headed east toward China. The Fa Men Temple, the Porcelain Tower (or Bao’en Temple) of Nanjing in China house relics that originated from India to worship and spread Buddhism.

China’s only female Emperor —— Wu Zetian who was also a recipient of the Buddha relic, consequently built the Long Men Grottoes in Luoyang. Thus, the Dharma is not merely a means for individual practice and self-actualization, its principles are equally adept for use in governance by sovereigns.

「願望非一時衝動,而是長久的堅持和付出。」
.
願望,也叫作「理想或人生的目標」。有了一個偉大而高尚的願望的話,我們才會有高尚的行為。
.
正如東方琉璃藥師佛,祂在行菩薩道的時候就發出十二大願,「令諸有情,所求皆得」,幫助所有有情眾生得到一切的美好。
.
我們在修行之後,也要發下一個如佛一般的願望:「我富有,還要讓更多人更富有;我心中光明,還要把這個光明放射出去,讓更多人心中能擁有光明。」在這樣的狀態下,真正去發願的人就容易有所獲得。有多大的願望就會有多大的力量,就會有多大的能量。

有了願望,還要堅持不懈的去執行、去付出。如果有了願望不去執行的話,那這一切都白費了。
.
大願,大行,我們就能改變自己、改變這個世界。

“Aspirations are not born from momentary impulse, but from enduring perseverance and effort.”

Aspiration is also known as “ideal or life goal”. With an ambitious and noble aspiration, we will conduct virtuous deeds.

Just like the Medicine Buddha, who avowed 12 aspirations even as he sought Buddhahood, with the following resolve – “to all compassionate sentient beings; your wishes will be realized” – in a bid to help all achieve every success.

Thus, following our practice, we should establish a similar aspiration like the Buddha, that is, “I’m blessed, but wish for more sentient beings to be blessed; my heart is illuminated, and I allow the illumination in me to radiate universally to illuminate all sentient beings”. In this manner, those who vowed with sincerity could realize the aspirations with ease. Greater aspirations will garner greater strength, and in turn, develop into greater power.

Having established our aspirations, we need a persevering and unwavering attitude to advance them, to execute (our plans). If there is no proactive effort with our aspirations, then all be in vain.

Ambitious aspirations, when matched with robust actions, provide us opportunities for positive changes within ourselves and in the world.

上週跟大家推薦蘿蔔乾之後,韓國同修就送來了一個涼拌蘿蔔乾的美食推薦,大家可以做看看!

蘿蔔乾極具營養與食療價值
有「素人參」之稱,有豐富的維生素B、鐵質、蛋白質、胡蘿蔔素、膽鹼、糖化酶等等,其中的膽鹼物質有利於減肥,糖化酶能分解食物中澱粉,幫助人體的消化與吸收,還能把致癌物質亞硝酸給分解掉。蘿蔔乾還有降血脂、降血壓、消炎、開胃、消油腻、化痰等功效,「拌蘿蔔乾」的材料與作法如下。

材料:蘿蔔乾、辣椒粉、鹽、芝麻、香油、醬油、醋、青椒絲。

做法:
1. 將蘿蔔乾洗淨浸泡半小時後撈出。
2. 倒入大碗中,分別倒入辣椒粉、鹽、芝麻、香油、攪拌。
3. 將醬油、醋、倒入盤中,灑上青椒絲。
4. 密封放置一小時後即可食用。

Bodhi healthy vegetarian kitchen ─ ─Dried Radish Salad

After recommending dried radish as a healthy food last week, our Korean fellow practitioners sent in their recipes for Dried Radish Salad. You can try making it! Thanks to our fellow practitioners from Korea!

Dried Radish, also known as “vegetarian ginseng”, are very nutritious. They are rich in vitamin B, iron, protein, carotene, choline, diastatic enzyme and so on. Choline substances can aid slimming while the diastatic enzymes can decompose starch in food and help in digestion and absorption of nutrients, They also help to break down carcinogenic nitrite which is cancer causing. Dried radish also helps lower blood lipid and blood pressure, have anti-inflammatory properties, improve appetite, eliminate greasiness and dissolve phlegm amongst other effects,

Ingredients for Dried Radish Salad are as follows:
Dried radishes, chili powder, salt, sesame, sesame oil, soy sauce, vinegar and cut green pepper strips.
Preparation method:-
1. Wash and soak dried radish for half an hour and drained
2. Mix well with chili powder, salt, sesame seeds and sesame oil in a large bowl
3. Pour soy sauce and vinegar, into the dish and sprinkle with cut green peppers strip.
4. Seal and let it stand for an hour. And it’s ready for consumption.

在一個中國皇帝的故事裡:漢武帝的媽媽是一個心胸殘忍、又很狹小的一個女人,好不容易熬到她兒子當政、當皇帝之後,和自己的弟弟兩個一起合作,拿了很多農地圈在皇帝的名下。雖她貴為皇太后,但一聽底下的官員占了多少農地,就怕搶輸了人,也跟著占農地去了、還為她兒子占塊地,真是可笑之極。

皇帝說:「天下都是我的,我要那一塊兒小小農地有何用途啊?」
.
他媽媽說:「天下都是你的,好像你抓不住、也摸不著。只有咱列在自己名下這一塊,才感覺像是我自己的。」
.
皇帝說:「錯了,這個國家正掌握在我手裡頭,我怎麼會摸不到它呢?妳要什麼有什麼,妳要那塊地有什麼用啊?」他媽媽至死都不認為自己的想法是錯誤的。這是什麼原因呢?——是心胸太小了!

心不夠開闊,是因為心不夠慈悲。心胸博大了,才能對很多原來計較的小事不再在意,不會受制於很多煩惱,才能成就大事業。

Compassion allows us to connect with the infinite energy of the universe (July 29, 2017)

How can we become more magnanimous and tolerant towards others so as to reduce unnecessary troubling thoughts?

A story about a Han Dynasty Chinese emperor: The Emperor of the Han, Han Wu-Ti’s mother was a cruel and narrow-minded woman. When her son finally ascended the throne and gained control of the country, she and her brother conspired to seize land from her son’s subjects on her son’s behalf and placed the land all under his name.

Though she was the Empress Dowager of the Han dynasty, she was petty-minded and fought with others to gain ownership of more land. Her actions were truly laughable!

The emperor told his mother: “The entire empire belongs to me, why do I want to bother myself with a small plot of land?”

His mother replied: “Though the empire belongs to you, it is not tangible. You are not able to touch it. We will feel secure only when the land is listed under our name since that proves our legal ownership.”

The emperor said: “Ridiculous! I run and control the country, what do you mean I cannot touch it? I can give you whatever you desire. What is the use of clinging on to a small plot of land?” However, the dowager empress remained unconvinced despite her son’s words. Why is that so? She is too narrow-minded!

A person’s heart is narrow because he is not compassionate enough. Only when he becomes magnanimous and broad-hearted, will he not get bogged down by daily trifling matters and is able to focus on the important things in life to achieve great accomplishments.

弘法的緣起

從我開始出山傳法,到今年已傳法了26年,幫人的心始終如一,不曾停下步伐,為的是:能多幫一個人,就多幫一個人。這份初心一直支持著我,同時也影響了很多有緣的同修與弟子到世界各地發展禪堂,讓更多人受益。
.
在我修行的過程中,有很長的時間都在思索著關於生命的出路、生命的定位、生命的能量、人生的價值、生存的意義、勇氣與智慧等等的議題。我幾乎沒怎麼去思考太多關於上天入地的問題,而是把大部分的精力用在思考人類生命的「活法」上,人這一生要做一個健康的、開心的人,甚至長壽的人是非常困難的,也正因有這樣的體悟,就希望把我從佛法中得到的受益傳給更多的人。

希望能將我所獲得的這些法,
傳遞給正被痛苦、煩惱、疾病折磨的人們,
讓所有的有緣人都能獲得,並受益於這些幫助,

The Origin of Dharma Teaching
26 years has passed since I left my meditation retreat to spread the Dharma.
My wish to help all sentient beings remains; steadfast as the first day. As long as I can continue to bring benefit to one more sentient being, I will gladly do so and never rest my pace. This initial aspiration has kept me on my path and inspired many practitioners and disciples to establish Bodhi Meditation centers across the world to bring benefits to all.

During the course of my cultivation and practice, a considerable amount of time is spent contemplating on issues such as the way of life, life convictions, vitality, life purpose, motivations behind survival, courage, wisdom and capability.
I hardly ponder about the divine aspects of Heaven and Earth. I devote most of my energy analyzing the day-to-day issues faced by human.
It is extremely difficult to have health, happiness and longevity. Thus, I hope to share my insights and blessings from Buddhadharma so that more people can benefit.

My aspirations are ──.
I wish to transmit my learnings and methods of practice to those who are suffering from pain, trouble, and disease. I hope all sentient beings with positive affinity can derive benefit from them.
May everyone be healthy, happy, auspicious, and blessed always!

There is hope for me — Rid of Sleep Apnea (Death Trigger In Sleep).

Sleep Apnea is an illness that may cause one to stop breathing whilst asleep. It can also lead to high blood pressure and potential heart attacks. Presently, there is no medical cure for Sleep Apnea and when serious, it is necessary for patients to use breathing apparatus during sleep.

Despite this, a student resolved his sleep apnea, a life threatening illness, in less than 108 days. He also cleansed his body of toxins. All these happened without medication. So, what magical method did he use?

Bodhi Meditation gave me a second chance at life.
My name is Zhiyuan Su and my Dharma name is Dongbing.
I suffered from several illnesses and have Sleep Apnea.
In my routine medical checks, the average times I stopped breathing per hour was 28.8 times.
According to my doctor, if the frequency reaches 30 times per hour, it is considered serious.
Presently, there is no medical cure for Sleep Apnea.
Based on my conditions, my doctor advised me to put on breathing apparatus when I sleep. I also suffer from heartburn (or acid reflux) and have breathing problems.

When I came to Bodhi Meditation, I practice Energy Bagua.
My blood pressure, cholesterol level and kidney function index used to be borderline high, indicating poor condition of internal organ functions.

After 2 weeks of Energy Bagua practice, my blood pressure dropped from 148 to 110.
I was diligent with my daily checks and scheduled my annual health checks in November.
Before I completed the 108 days of Energy Bagua practice, I went for a check-up and noticed that, apart from a lower blood pressure, my cholesterol level also reduced from 6.2mmol/L to 5.8 mmol/L. Kidney function indicators improved from my usual high of 112umol/L to 108 umol/L, which is below the normal standard level of 109umol/L.
I was exhilarated and full of confidence! I’m saved!
My Energy Bagua teacher used to tell us that Energy Bagua practice can rid our body of accumulated toxins and increase our body immunity to give us a fresh start to good health.
During the process of healing, my whole body was covered with spots like German Measles from head to toe, growing in size to that of Leopard spots and it worries me.
I also noticed snow flake-like stuff like dandruff, appeared all over my head.
Despite washing my hair regularly, it was hard to get rid of them.
Eventually, when the skin started to peel, I realized that I was undergoing a detoxification process.
Now, I feel good and confident. After a month of detoxification, my body feels good and I am free from Sleep Apnea.
All these benefits are results of my Bodhi Meditation practices.
It can benefit the public. Hopefully, more will come to Bodhi Meditation and thereafter, share their testimonials to those who are still not aware of Bodhi Meditation.

?心血管疾病患者或者高危人員(因存在一種或多種危險因素,如高血壓、糖尿病、高脂血症或原先患有的疾病)需要借助諮詢和適當藥物進行早期發現並有效管理。

怎麼降低心血管疾病的危險因子呢?

已經證明,減少膳食中的鹽含量與糖含量、食用新鮮水果蔬菜、有規律進行身體鍛煉可降低罹患心血管疾病的危險。此外,可能需要對糖尿病、高血壓和高血脂採取藥物治療,以減少心血管病危險並預防心臟病發作和中風。

?It is estimated that 17.5 million people have died of cardiovascular disease in 2012, accounting for 31% of the total number of deaths worldwide. Among these deaths, an estimated 7.4 million people died of coronary heart disease and 6.7 million people died of stroke.
?Patients with cardiovascular disease or high risk (due to the presence of one or more risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, or previously suffering from illness) need to detect early so as to effectively managed their condition through counseling and appropriate medications.

How can we reduce the risk factors of cardiovascular disease?

It has been shown that by reducing the salt and sugar intake from our diet, eating more fresh fruits and vegetables, and doing regular physical exercises can all help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, it may be necessary to take medication for diabetes, high blood pressure and high blood lipids to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and prevent an heart attack or stroke.

As cardiovascular disease has become the world’s leading cause of death, people who die from cardiovascular diseases every year far exceeds those from cancer, the World Health Organization has issued a solemn report warning, hoping to create public awareness and understanding of this new vascular disease.

For health and in order to drop our 3 ‘High’s (high blood pressure, high blood sugar and high blood lipids), I propose that we say ‘No’ to these 3 food choices for a month: “do not consume milk, meat and sugar.” Through changes in our eating habits , adjust the physiological function, by eating with the appropriate forging chain, you can stay away from the 3 ‘High’s. This month I will continue to recommend options for a healthy diet.
