Don’t want to be sick? Deal with negative emotions first.

Recently, I saw a report online in which a psychologist mentioned: “A person’s mental state is analogous to the software of a computer while the physical state is like the hardware. Both are equally important. Harmony is the essence of health; a harmonious mood is the software of a healthy body.”

This aligns very well to the observation I have made over the years from my meditation experience. Keeping an optimistic and positive mentality leads to longevity, improved immunity and good health.

These are my wishes for everybody:
Always be grateful and thankful to our parents who gave us life and brought us up!
Always be grateful and thankful to those who educate us and helped us grow!
Always be grateful and thankful to all who have helped us in the past!
Always be grateful and thankful to all things on heaven and on earth that have blessed me with all that I have in my life!
Always be grateful and thankful to the Bodhisattvas for the happiness and good fortune that I have been blessed with!

A thought of benevolence brings bountiful blessings

Just how powerful is a person’s thought?
Let me share with you a story about a poor woman who made a light offering!

When Buddha was giving Dharma talks at Savatthi, there was a poor woman named Nanda who eked out a living by begging.

Nanda often thought, “Due to the seeds of grave wrongdoings in the past, I am denigrated to a life of poverty and lowliness in this lifetime as they bore fruit. While I have the karmic connection to meet with the Buddha, I could not afford to offer anything to venerate the Buddha”. Nanda was inconsolably sad, as remorse weighed heavily on her destitute predicament.

On a fateful day, Nanda managed to receive a little penny after much difficulty. Elated, she immediately took the penny to the oil shop. She wanted to buy an oil lamp to venerate the Buddha, and seek the Buddha’s guidance out of her current predicament.

When Nanda took the penny to the oil shop, she realized that a penny simply could not afford an oil lamp! Following, she implored incessantly with the shopowner. Only after tremendous efforts did he agree to let her have double the amount of oil so that she can offer a full oil lamp to venerate the Buddha.

With the oil lamp in both hands, Nanda respectfully visited the Buddha’s sanctuary to offer the oil lamp before the Buddha.

She also made a great vow, “I am poor today because I did not know how to cultivate my merit field in my past life. I have nothing to offer before the Buddha except for this oil lamp. But I earnestly pray with this lamp before the Buddha, that with his perfect virtues, he can guide me out of this tragic fate of poverty, illness, pain and suffering, and in future, (may I) be able to guide all sentient beings away from ignorance and darkness, towards realization.

The next day, when Venerable Ananda entered the prayer hall for regular maintenance, he found that all the oil lamps had burned out; only the poor woman’s lamp continued to burn; in fact, her oil lamp and its wick had not the slightest sign of burning out, as if it had been newly-lit. He wanted to extinguish the fire, but found that no matter how hard he tried, he just could not do it.

Upon this sight, the Buddha explained, “This oil lamp is not one that you can extinguish, even if you use vast spiritual powers, or the waters from the four great seas, because it is offered by a devotee with immense Bodhichitta”.

Just as the Buddha had finished his sentence, Nanda entered the hall to venerate the Buddha once again. The Buddha said to her, “You will in two great asamkhyeyas eons attain Buddhahood and will be known as the Light Buddha”

After reading the story of the poor woman, don’t we feel more enlightened and inspired?
I hope that everyone’s wishes be fulfilled, and may all be filled with all-round happiness!

A Respectful Heart Accumulates Immeasurable Merits

Once, the Sixth Patriarch Huineng received a monastic named Venerable Fada.

As Venerable Fada paid his respects to the Sixth Patriarch, he vehemently refused to bow with his head to the ground. Knowing that there was a sense of obstruction in his heart, the Sixth Patriarch asked, “You pay respects, yet are not willing to bow fully. Perhaps you should just dispense with it. You seem to have a concern, would you like to share it?”

Fada replied, “(I’ve) Recited the Lotus Sutra for more than 3,000 times.”
Apparently, Venerable Fada presumed that with his more than 3,000 recitations of the Lotus Sutra, he had fully grasped the Dharma, and attained exceptional realization. Consequently, he need not bow with his head touching the ground.

The Sixth Patriarch listened, smiled, and added, “Undue fixation on The Lotus Sutra, detracts one from the real essence of the Sutra; without correct contemplation on its essence, one is none the wiser; non-‘grasping’ (attachment) is key to benevolence, for ‘grasping’ leads to evil; yet if one is without any fixation on ‘grasping’ and non-‘grasping’, that is of the supreme vehicle (Mahayana practice)”.

Fada listened, and experienced an instant epiphany, “With a respectful and sincere heart, one can eliminate a negative karmic trait”.

Sentient beings tend to develop a false sense of self-importance and arrogance over perceived individual capability and status. Practitioners too, tend to be attached to the accumulation of spiritual powers and merits, and may even start to withdraw socially, and impose self-limits. They would not be able to realize the real meaning of life through self-seclusion, not to mention about the effective use of Buddhadharma to help more sentient beings.

As the scriptures expound, “With a respectful and sincere heart, one can eliminate a negative karmic trait”.
Further, with this sincere reverence, one lays the foundation to his or her immeasurable merit field.

May everyone be blessed with,
‘A sincere reverence that brings immeasurable merits’.

【Demonstrating love and respect for one’s parents is a basic principle of being an evolved human being.

May is the month of filial piety
This is a touching story that was recorded in the Miscellaneous Treasures Sutra…

The Buddha said: “There are two kinds of evils. The karma from committing these two evils will cause a person to rapidly fall into hell just as fast a ball rebounds after being hit. What are these two evils?
1. Not honoring or supporting parents.
2. When parents are still alive, one flouts the law and commit many evil deeds dishonoring and embarrassing the parents.

However, there are two kinds of right actions that can allow one to enjoy positive karma quickly. What are the two?
1. Taking care and honoring parents.
2. When parents are alive, carry out good deeds, giving parents a good reputation.

The Buddha then shared another story…

“In the past, there was a parrot living in the snowy mountains. Since Its parents were blind, they could not go out and hunt for food. Hence, the parrot flew a few miles each day to collect good fruits to feed his parents .

One day, the parrot passed by a farmland and saw a kind farmer. The farmer was willing to share his rice with all beings in the world. After the parrot listened to his vows, it often went to collect the grain.

One day, the farmer went to the field to inspect his crops. He discovered that many of his rice crops had been pecked off recently. The farmer felt annoyed and decided to set up a net in the field.

The next day, when the parrot came back, it was caught in the net. The farmer found that there was some movement in the net and came over to inspect.

The parrot met the farmer and said, “Do you remember that in the past, you made a vow that you would give your rice to all sentient beings in heaven and the earth?” That’s why I dared to come to your farm to get food. Are you turning back on your promise now?

Upon hearing that, the farmer remembered his vow and asked the parrot , “Why did you take so much rice then?” 』

Parrot: “I need to support my father and mother who are both blind and unable to look for food. ”

The farmer was extremely touched. He told the parrot: “In future, you are free to take as much grains as you like from me.”

The parrot was actually the Buddha in his past life. The farmer was Sariputta, the blind father and mother were Suddhodana Gautama and his wife, Maya Devi . Therefore, a vow to do good can bring people together through fate and will continue on and on.

This story is adapted from one of the volumes of the famous sutras.

A sincere chant to Buddha brings you a lifetime of auspiciousness

In the Amitayurdhyana sutra (or Sutra of Contemplation on Buddha Amitayus) the Buddha said,
” A sincere chant to Buddha can eradicate eight billions of the most severe past wrongdoings.”

What does that mean?
For example, in a pitch black room (referring to sentient beings being ignorant and obstructed from reality), when we light a lamp, the entire house will be illuminated (symbolizing the auspicious light of the Buddha).

Thus, no matter the challenges, or frustrations that you are currently facing, let’s venerate the Buddha through more sincere chanting!!

May all of you be blessed with;

A heart that is vast like the ocean bears the universe.

Once upon a time, there was a Chinese emperor’s mother. She slogged hard to help her son become the emperor. When she heard about the court officials trying to accumulate as much agricultural land as they could, she was afraid of losing out. So together with her brother, she too started to acquire agricultural land in the emperor’s name.

One day, the emperor said to her, “Mother, the world belongs to me. What use will these small plots of land be to me?”

The emperor’s mother replied, “The world may be yours, but you cannot grasp or touch it, only land that is listed in our names feel like they belong to us.”

The reason for her thinking is that her mindset is too narrow.

If we open up our narrow mindset, broaden our perspectives, have a magnanimous heart, we are no longer concerned over the small stuff that we were previously. That way, we find that we would not be subject to most of the frustrations, and could focus on achieving our big aspirations!

Pursue the truth with sincerity; practice the Dharma with perseverance.

In the history of Chan (Zen) Buddhism, the Sixth Patriarch, Huineng travelled all the way to HuangMei to learn Dharma from the Fifth Patriarch, Hongren. The Fifth Patriarch asked: “You are of the Lingnan lineage and also a barbarian from the south, so how can you become a Buddha?”

The Sixth Patriarch replied: “Although people are differentiated by their place of birth, but their Buddha nature have no disparity. Everyone has the potential to become a Buddha!” Subsequently, Huineng was sent to the shed to pound rice for more than 8 months.

Finally, when the Fifth Patriarch was choosing the candidate to pass down his robe and teachings, Huineng’s verse: “The Bodhi is not the form of a tree,
The bright mirror has no stand; When originally there is nothing, How could dust have gathered” –won him the Fifth Patriarch’s robe and teachings. Subsequently, to escape from being killed for his robe, Huineng lived a secluded life among the hunters. Eventually he was enlightened and founded the Chan Buddhism, leaving behind a spectacular Chan Buddhism history.

In reality, intelligence is not the essential factor for life’s success.

Regardless of your aspiration, the key to success lies in sincerity and perseverance.
