The Legend of Dzi Bead – Evil eye

It is said that there is a kind of precious jewel which fell from heaven. This special jewel is deemed as the heaven’s bead which can be used to protect against disasters and accumulate wealth and fortune. As the beads are so precious and respected, it is called “Dzi bead”.

Dzi bead, also known as “heaven’s pearl”, originated from greater Asia region. The circles on the Dzi beads represent “eyes”. Why are the Dzi beads etched with “eyes”? Ancient folk legend has this saying that there was a hideous demon with bloody red and green eyes, sucking the soul and heart of people, possessing them and causing them to fall sick.

To counteract this, the folk healers and wizards painted the world’s largest eye of the demon, known as “evil eye”. If you bless and wear it, it will protect you against the evil eye. It means: your eyes are scary, but mine are scarier than yours. That probably marks the beginning of Dzi bead.

Also, in the past, due of the lack of medicine, people were more prone to disease. Hence, they had to resort to seeking folk witchcraft for treatment and Dzi beads were widely used as part of the traditional curative ritual.

If a Dzi bead is more than 200 years old, and has been used and chanted by monks and Buddhist practitioners, it would have carried with it a kind of compassionate energy and power and will bless and protect its wearer.

Take a simple example: many people have had the experience of suffocation in their sleep with their body pressed on by some forces and unable to wake up. When they struggled and eventually woke up, they continued to have a terrible heartache for two days. This is form of possession by evil spirit and there are many reasons for this phenomenon.

Benefits of Dzi Beads

1. For the mind
Dzi bead has a positive magnetic field energy, which helps you to face life with optimism. One may choose to wear a suitable Dzi bead during difficult time such as economic downturn or high unemployment. It also helps those who suffer from depression, lack of confidence, or lack of zest in life to find optimism. When in contact with our body, it emits exceptional power, which can clear negative thoughts and forces, thereby helping the wearer to have a positive attitude towards life.

2. For the body
Dzi beads can protect against danger and bring peace. Through years of immersion in heaven and earth’s energy, it serves as a protector against negative forces. It also helps practitioners to gain inspiration as well as improve their cultivation to attain an elevated level of compassion and wisdom.

Dzi bead provides overall benefit to the human body.
In the biography of King Gesar, it was documented that he made a vow while he buried the Dzi beads: “May the Dzi beads gather in the hands of Buddha and Master. May the heavenly dharma guardians safeguard the Dzi beads till the arrival of the virtuous disciple”. Thus the Tibetans believe that to have a Dzi bead is a reflection of one’s accumulated blessing and merits of many lifetimes. Thus to own a Dzi bead in the lifetime is in some sense, a sign of progression in your dharma cultivation.

One may invite a Dzi bead from a Bodhi Meditation center. We wish all who have the opportunity to read this article to own one of these propitious treasures. May you receive Buddha’s blessing. May your life be liberated and beautiful.

Save me!
A netizen (N) reached out to me last night, exclaiming, “Master (M), you saved my life!
Puzzled, I responded, “… but I don’t remember calling for an ambulance?”
N: “No, Master, I was not sick, injured or in need of emergency medical attention”.
M: “I don’t recall if there were robbery or suicide cases…”
N: “No, a few days ago, I did not jump off from a building but had wanted to jump into the sea…”

The conversation progressed into her recent experiences and how it had changed her life significantly.
She was a participant in one of my meditation classes and was at the lowest point of her life. She didn’t make it to the university, and was unsuccessful with her job search. Jobless, she became depressed. Her parents did not get along and her mother left her philandering father. There was no warmth in the family and she stayed at home most of the time, often crying till midnight and even lost her will to live.
Her aunt persuaded her to go abroad to attend classes and relax, and she readily agreed. In reality, her purpose was not to relax. She had never tried meditative practice and was not keen. She just wanted to find a beach where no one knew her and then end her life, never to return.

She narrated:
During the class, Master was humorous and the meaningful narrations on the daily hustle and bustle of life left strong impressions on her. There was the story of a sister who was steadfast about learning (Zen meditation from Master), even at the expense of her life. At this point, Master gently reminded us that you cannot bear to leave us to die because your aim is to save and revive all, so we must live, and live well! This moved me, and gave me hope.

You’d narrated about the girl who was pursuing studies abroad, without the comfort of friends, far from her family and encountering language barriers. She eventually chose to hang herself just before she boarded the plane for home. This story overwhelmed me and I could not hold back my tears. Isn’t this so similar to my predicament? I had no motivation to live. My life path had crumbled – no friends, no family love, no job; nothing to look forward to…

Yet Master sternly reiterated, “Isn’t this a familiar situation faced by every foreign student and immigrant? Once we overcome the initial hurdles, we are winners! No obstacle is ever too challenging unless we lose confidence in ourselves. Those who lose were defeated in their minds without having really persevered.” Every word that Master uttered struck me like deafening thunder, almost making me jump in a reflex action.

“Going into depression just because one is jobless marks a weak and ignorant character. One should look on the positive side and be assured that a better new job awaits us. One must never give up but persevere until success. ‘Failure’ and ‘Death’ should not exist in our thoughts – only ‘Live’, and ‘Live well!’, Master enlightened us.
I held back my tears at that moment, and upon hearing the six-syllable heart mantra, it literally overwhelmed my mind. At that instance, I felt an uplifting dose of energy infused into my mind and body. From that moment onwards, I no longer feel lonely. I have bountiful energy and confidence!

Subsequently, I did visit the beach at Busan. It was heavenly. Calling out to the waters, I reaffirmed, “I will not be weak; I am born into strength – a winner!” Master, you might not have noticed, but you saved my life! I’ve since completed my college education, am cheerful, have a good job and am continuing with my meditation practice.

What are your thoughts after hearing her story?
Buddhadharma is revivifying, especially to every sincere practitioner and to those who want to be successful.

#ChantForOurAncestors

[ A sincere chant surpasses receiving thousand taels of gold ]

The fate of man is related to one’s good and evil conduct. A good or evil action and its outcome is called “energy” or “cause and effect,” which can be passed down through generations.

Every child’s fate and health is predestined at the moment of birth. We inherit the good and bad genes of our parents, grandparents and ancestors as well as their diseases, merits, sins, looks, and personalities.

Therefore, our lives are inextricably linked to our ancestors. Qing Ming Festival is approaching in a few more days; a day to commemorate our ancestors. If we chant sincerely to Buddha to seek his blessing to illuminate and protect our ancestors, we, as descendants, will also be blessed.

Join me this Saturday to [Chant for Our Parents and Ancestors]. Be like the All-Compassionate and Magnanimous Buddha of immense compassion and virtues, we transfer our accumulated merits to our descendants.

May all of you enjoy good health, longevity, auspiciousness, and prosperity.

Ching Ming Festival: To commemorate and show gratitude to ancestors.

During Ching Ming festival (early April in the Greogorian calendar), the best way to commemorate and show gratitude to our ancestors is to offer lights to them in front of the Buddha and pray for blessings for them. This is also good for ourselves, our children and grandchildren.

When our ancestors and relatives are blessed by the Buddha light and reborn to a blissful state, the future generations will also be protected, blessed and enjoy good fortune and wisdom. Therefore, do visit the Meditation Center whenever you are available to offer light to your ancestors, pray for blessing and chant. Chanting can help them eradicate karmic debts and accumulate merits. Let the Buddha’s light guide those ancestors who are wandering in darkness to reborn to Pure Land. At the same time, this brings illumination to you and your descendants, enjoying the good fortune and wisdom together.

Do take the opportunity of this duration to offer light to your ancestors and relatives. Blessings to all of you!

#春季養生、#薺菜、#三月三、#皇帝內經rnrn[Wisdom of traditional spring diet –”Sanyuesan” festival (third day of the lunar third month) —
Shepherd’s purse is good as a panacea]

As if knowing what is soon to come, the plants and trees start to bud and blossom as spring arrives. At the start of spring, wild herbs proliferate, releasing the energy accumulated through the winter. The spring also brings along fresh energy. This can be described as a combination of yin and yang strength, which can clear the turbid heat that remains in the digestive system and inject new vitality into life.

《The Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine》: Illness from cold in the winter invariably results in warm disease in spring. When a person has a cold during winter and does not fully recover, the chill can remain dormant in the body. In spring as the weather begins to warm, this hidden infection may then flare up. Extremes of cold generates heat. As a result, influenza may arise. To prevent this dormant winter chill from eventually turning into heat in spring, one needs to take herbal tonic to enhance the health and strength. One should also avoid spicy and heaty Chinese medicine. Shepherd’s purse is mild in nature. It dispels cold yet does not cause any heatiness. Its cooling effects suppress heat, yet will not cause a chill. Therefore, Shepherd’s purse is a very appropriate herb to take during spring time.

Origin of taking Shepherd’s Purse as a panacea during the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month

There is a legend that on the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month, Hua Tuo (an ancient Chinese physician from the Eastern Han period) had gone to Miancheng to gather medicinal herbs. Caught in a sudden downpour, he went to a villager’s shed to take shelter from the rain. He observed that an old man in the house was suffering miserably from headache and dizziness. After making a diagnosis, Hua Tuo collected one handful of shepherd’s purse, extracted the juice and boiled it with eggs. He then passed the medicine to the old man to take. After taking the medicine a few times using the same method of preparation, the old man fully recovered. News spread and other people repeated the same preparation. From then on, this preparation of shepherd’s purse with egg soup on the 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month was handed down for generations.

Shepherd’s purse is also known as capsella bursa-pastoris. It can be plain-fried, taken cold with sauce dressing, or commonly made into soup or as stuffing for dumplings. This year, 3rd day of the 3rd lunar month falls on 30th March on the Gregorian calendar. It is recommended that during this time, everyone should eat a bowl of shepherd’s purse egg soup, for its cooling effect, lowering of blood pressure, nourishing the blood and its calming effect. The ingredients and methods of preparation are as follows.

Ingredients:
1. a handful of shepherd’s purse
2. one piece of seaweed (size of a palm)
3. an egg
4. salt for taste
5. appropriate amount of sesame oil

Method:
1. Pluck the shepherd’s purse leaves, wash clean and cut into 2mm sections.
Boil seaweed in the water, break an egg and stir it.
OR
2. Pour appropriate amount of water into a pot to boil. Put in the shepherd’s purse and seaweed. One minute later, add the stirred egg into the pot. Then, turn off heat.

Add a pinch of salt and a few drops of sesame oil. The soup is now ready for consumption.

行不去處,須知退一步之法;

Cultivating humility

When one’s path is obstacle-laden, one needs to put humility at the fore;
When one’s path is smooth, one needs to work three times harder at humility.
.
The above is one of the aphorisms from the book Caigentan that urged for cultivation of humility toward all, in times of adversity and even more so in times of fortune.
.
Ever heard of the Six Feet Lane in Tongcheng, Anhui, and wondered about its beginnings?
During the Qing dynasty, there was an illustrious Zhang family, whose patriarchs served as Prime Ministers for three generations. This family disputed with his neighbor over the surrounding land in order to build his villa. Neither side was prepared to give way over the three feet border of land. The situation escalated to the Judicial Court.
.
The Zhang family, being senior officials, was not afraid of the lawsuit. Prime Minister Zhang had his aide reach out in a letter to the county head in the Capital to pass the judgement in favor of the Zhang family.
.
Having received and read the letter, the county head responded cryptically, “… if you can reach out over thousands of miles to seek a favor, is it too much to give up a three feet wide space? The thousand-mile glorious Great Wall is clear for all to see, yet how many have any idea how its originator Emperor Qin look like?”
.
Upon reading the response, Prime Minister Zhang immediately stopped pursuing the case, and offered the three feet wide space to his neighbor as a gesture of magnanimity. The neighbor, surprised by the change of heart, reciprocated by giving up another three feet of space, bringing the matter to rest. This story thereafter came to be known as the “Six Feet Lane” legend.
.
Another tale involved a Prince Guo Ziyi《郭子仪》during the Tang dynasty. Emerging victorious from a battle and in celebratory spirits, the Prince wanted to build a villa and decided to supervise its construction. He would constantly remind the workers to perform and not fail in their mission. The workers, tired of the incessant badgering, took to reassure the Prince that his family of three generations in Chang’an had been specializing in masonry work. In fact, they had constructed countless villas and never had one collapsed. The houses had also outlasted several owners! From that instance, Prince Guo stopped hassling the workers.
.
Through these simple yet philosophical occurrences, Prime Minister Zhang and Prince Guo learnt their lessons in humility.
Humility is a great virtue; when one takes the first step towards humility by giving way and giving selflessly, one benefits and gains greater wisdom.
