立秋,是秋天的第一個節氣,太陽到達黃經135°,今年是陽曆8月7日,立秋意味著暑去涼來、秋天開始。
.
雖然在節氣上來講已進入了秋天,但是炎熱並未完全消退,三伏天的「末伏」就在立秋節氣裡,但往往是白天很熱,而夜晚開始變涼爽,因此要注意依時增減衣物,晚上睡覺時切莫貪涼受風。
.
立秋節,也稱七月節,古代帝王在這天會舉行祭祀儀式迎接秋天到來,民間則流行秤量體重的習俗,將體重與立夏時對比。因為人到夏天沒有什麼胃口,飲食清淡簡單,兩、三個月下來,體重一般都要減少。現在天氣轉涼爽了,胃口也好了,想增加一點營養,補償夏天的損失,這就是所謂的「貼秋膘」。

「貼秋膘」也不一定非要吃肉,而是通過豐富的食材,進行合理的營養搭配,彌補夏季身體虧空,儲備冬季身體能量,比如可以適當多吃些健脾益胃、強健機體的山藥,或者養陰清熱、清心安神的蓮藕,營養的豆類製品也是不錯的選擇。

Beginning of Autumn – where vegetarian dishes can ‘Add Autumn Fat’ too

The ‘Beginning of Autumn’ is the first Solar Term in the Fall season, where the sun reaches the celestial longitude of 135 degree. This year the Beginning of Autumn falls on the 7th of August on the Gregorian calendar, and it signifies the end of Summer heat and the beginning of Autumn coolness.

Even though we are entering the Beginning of Autumn Solar Term, the Summer heat has not completely dissipated. Furthermore, the last period of the three hottest periods of summer falls in this solar term. Hence, the days are often extremely hot while the nights are cool and it is important not to catch a cold by adjusting the layers of clothes accordingly and keep yourself warm in bed at night.

The ‘Beginning of Autumn’ festival is also known as the 7th month festival where ancient emperors would conduct prayers and offerings session to welcome Autumn on this day. There is also a tradition of comparing one’s body weight during this time to that taken in the Beginning of Summer Solar Term. This is because during the summer months, appetite is usually compromised and people tend to eat simple light food, such that the bodyweight will drop correspondingly. When the temperature starts to drop during this period, appetites will improve significantly and it is a good time to build up one’s body weight through better nourishment so as to compensate the weight lost in summer. Hence there is this saying called ‘Adding Autumn Fat’.

‘Adding Autumn Fat’ does not necessarily mean eating meat, but it is about combining a variety of ingredients to provide sufficient nutrients to replenish the weight loss in summer and to build energy reserves for the upcoming winter season. You can consider taking an appropriate amount of wild yam, which is good for strengthening the digestive system and building a strong body. Taking lotus root is also good as it can help to clear internal heat and calm the mind. Eating nutritious beans or beans products are also good choices.

How do you handle your rebellious teenage children? (5 Aug, 2017)

Parents with teenage children worry and suffer from headaches. They feel that their children undergo a dramatic transformation, no longer obey their parents and become more temperamental as they enter a rebellious stage. Many teenagers think they know best and do things their way. However, a lot of times what they do are inappropriate and parents find it hard to control them and this becomes a delicate problem for parents to handle.

How do parents handle and guide rebellious teenagers?
From my experience and finding, children with better behavior tend to have more accommodating parents who let them try new things when opportunity arises.

Say a child places a piece of lemon in his mouth. Some parents will immediately say, “Don’t eat it!” and immediately prevent the child for doing that. Another group of parents will instead say, “You can chew and try the taste!”. As long as there is no danger, let your child try so that he can learn for his own experiences.

Educating a child is like cooking. When there is a need to exert control, parents have to intervene. However, to what degree should parents intervene so that there is a balance? Let us discuss during this Saturday’s group practice session on “Discover children”. We welcome everyone to leave your questions and comments here.

現代人的生活當中「糖」似乎無處不在,雖然糖分對人體來說是必需品,但是一般食物當中所含的糖分,就已經足以應付人體所需的量,不必額外再從別的地方補充。而且吃太多含有糖分的食物,除了對身體不好之外,還會上癮,如果想要健康,就把生活當中不必要的含糖食品戒掉吧!

有些人就很好奇了:如何戒糖呢?是該每天少吃一點,慢慢戒除比較好、還是狠下心腸一次就讓自己「斷糖」呢?
.
根據研究,如果在開始戒糖的前3天裡完全不吃含糖食品,比採取溫和漸進式的斷糖法容易成功。因為人都有惰性,很難抗拒近在眼前的誘惑,會忍不住告訴自己「多吃一口不會怎麼樣的」,最終會導致戒糖失敗。

戒除糖癮除了讓自己不再變胖,也會更有活力,消化也會改善,甚至連皮膚都會變得更有光澤。

戒糖的好處很多,所以想讓自己更健康的話,就快點把對糖分的依賴給戒掉吧!如果真的覺得沒有甜味就渾身不對勁,不妨吃一些新鮮當季的水果,不過水果也不能吃太多,要適量吃才好。

佛陀滅度若干年後,印度出現了一位阿育王。這個人很能征戰,就像中國的秦始皇,他有一位妃子,是一位非常慈悲的佛教徒,一直在用慈悲啟發他:作為君王應該先有仁慈之道,因為仁慈、因為慈悲才能讓大家恭敬你、愛戴你、樂意跟著你走,你不能用殺戮的方式來對待子民。

阿育王就問:「你這些方法從哪兒來的?」
.
她說:「都是當年佛陀說的。」
.
阿育王說:「你們這個佛所教的就是管理之道啊,尤其是對做君王的人來說,佛法就是統領民眾的最好方法。」

於是,阿育王開始行慈悲之道——以慈悲、寬容之心行使君王的權利,同時發願:修建八萬四千座佛塔供奉佛陀舍利,並派出很多位僧人使者,將佛法以及這些舍利弘揚到全世界去。其中有幾位就往東方走到了中國,像中國法門寺、南京大報恩寺那些舍利,都是從印度傳到中國來弘揚佛法的。

中國唯一的女皇帝——武則天,也因為接到了佛舍利,才修了洛陽龍門石窟。因此,佛法不僅是個人提升境界與修行的方法,好好善用也能成為君王之道。

Many years after the Buddha’s parinirvana, there was a King Ashoka of India. He was very capable in warfare, much like China’s Emperor Qin Shi Huang. He had a concubine who was an extraordinarily compassionate Buddhist. The lady conscientiously enlightened Ashoka with compassionate Dharma, such as, “.. a King should be benevolent; being benevolent and compassionate, he would enjoy respect from the masses, who would then readily follow and support him; the masses do not yield to oppression and indiscriminate killing.”

King Ashoka asked, “Where did you learn this?”

She explained, “This was expounded by Buddha during his time.”

Ashoka then exclaimed, “These teachings by the Buddha are in fact management principles, in particular for a sovereign, the Dharma is the best approach to lead the people.”

Following that, King Ashoka took on a compassionate path – exercising his rule as a sovereign with compassion and benevolence. At the same time, he vowed to build 84,000 shrines to worship the relics of the Buddha, and initiated a global campaign led by several Buddhist missionaries to spread the Dharma and the Buddha’s relics worldwide. Amongst the missionaries, some headed east toward China. The Fa Men Temple, the Porcelain Tower (or Bao’en Temple) of Nanjing in China house relics that originated from India to worship and spread Buddhism.

China’s only female Emperor —— Wu Zetian who was also a recipient of the Buddha relic, consequently built the Long Men Grottoes in Luoyang. Thus, the Dharma is not merely a means for individual practice and self-actualization, its principles are equally adept for use in governance by sovereigns.
