【First day of Lunar New Year】 Usher in a brand-new year, offer incense to seek good fortune

Greetings on the first day of the Lunar New Year!
After eating dumplings and setting off fire-crackers, we stepped out of our house to exchange well-wishes and blessings with friends, relatives and neighbors. Everyone is generous with their auspicious words. These well-wishes seem like a chant and brings happiness and good fortune to all.

On the first day of Lunar New Year, it is imperative for us to engage in auspicious activity– offer incense to Buddha. Make sincere offerings to Buddha and Bodhisattvas, confide in them your worries and wishes. May your loved ones enjoy a smooth year under the protection of Buddha’s light. May Buddha’s light shine into their hearts so that they will never get lost and stay clear of depraved path. To eradicate negative energy, obstacles and hindrances.

I welcome you to come down to our centre to chant and offer lights to seek blessings for your loved ones.

Wishing you a happy Lunar New Year. May you lead a healthy, long life and all your dreams come true!

Start of Spring is the beginning of recovery of warmth

Start of Spring (February 4, 2019 of the Gregorian calendar) is the first of the 24 solar terms, and also the start of the re-emergence of Yang energy.
Spring is also the beginning of vibrant growth in all living things. The human body and nature, having hibernated through the cold winter, rejuvenate and become active in spring.

There is a wellness saying: “In the three months of Spring, comb your hair one to two hundred times daily.” Combing your hair more often in spring helps stimulate the meridians, prevent drowsiness, increase blood circulation and assist the flow of yang energy. For the elderly, it can also reduce the occurrence of cerebrovascular disease. Morning is the best time to comb the hair. From the forehead hairline all the way to the back of the neck, comb at least 50 times or more for it to be effective, and the scalp feels slightly warm.

In addition, you can also use your fingers to comb your hair and massage your scalp. 10 mins each time to dispel wind, improve eyesight and relieve headaches.

We can choose ‘health foods’ that are relatively hot (in nature), sweet and nourishing, and less sour, such as Big Dates, Red Dates, and goji berries.

Spiritually, we should keep an open-mind, be optimistic and uplifted, so as to maintain a positive mentality.

Also, I would suggest that we venture outdoors and exercise more.

Finally, I hope that you strengthen your practice and lay a good foundation for your health throughout the year.

Reuniting on the eve to welcome the new year

Today is the eve of Lunar New Year. Those of you who have been working away from home, are you back with your parents yet?
Your parents are still waiting for you.

The reunion dinner on the eve of Lunar New Year is the most important dinner of the year. This is when the entire family get together to catch up with each other. What is nostalgic about this special day is not just the good food and drinks. Rather, it is the relaxed and joyful atmosphere created by family members caring for each other. The hard work and anticipation in the previous year seem to be well compensated and satisfied during this great meal of reunion.

There is another important custom for the reunion dinner – eating dumplings. The Chinese word for dumpling has the sound as the phrase that means the “change of year”. Dumplings are shaped like gold ingots to symbolize a steady stream of wealth in the new year. A coin will also be wrapped in one of the dumplings and the person who gets the dumpling with the coin will be blessed with good luck in the coming year. Some people also include pistachio nuts (symbolic of happiness), or sweets (symbolic of sweetness) in the dumplings to represent their wishes for the coming year.

After dinner, the children will surround the adults to ask for auspicious red packets. After that, the whole family will gather together to “shou sui” (the act of staying up the entire night on Lunar New Year eve).

On this last night of the year, the family reminisce together on the year that is about to pass and stand guard over the young ones who represents the family’s hopes and future. They wish that the coming year will be filled with good fortune, peace and ease. This is what family is all about.

On this Lunar New Year eve, I wish that everyone will have a joyous new year and that all families will be filled with joy, happiness, good fortune and safety!
