In our lifetime, we will surely meet many people. Many are merely acquaintances and only a handful few will make it into our inner circle. For these few, we always use ‘fate’ to explain the relationship.

What is fate? What’s the cause?
I am sure many of you will be curious and in search of the reason behind the mystery of fate. How shall we deal with the ‘fated relationships’ already in our life?

我們都曾走過年輕,抵達終點卻是各自的千姿百態。
這位年輕有為的小弟子,透過禪修,從此讓他的生命更精采。

我的法名叫備帆,今年(2017年)16歲。 。
是一名在校高中生,最熱愛的體育運動是打冰上曲棍球。
2013年8月,我在媽媽的建議下,第一次參加了菩提禪修舉辦的夏令營活動。豐富有趣的課程讓我喜歡上了菩提禪修的夏令營活動。

2015年8月,是我第三次參加菩提禪修的夏令營。此次活動,作為組長的我收穫頗多,學會了主動關心他人,並站在對方的角度,凡事先為他人著想。之前的兩次夏令營,我在爬山時會嫌棄其他落後的隊友們,但是這次活動中,我多了一份責任感,不僅走在隊伍的最後,還會去鼓勵那些落在後面的隊員們。當大家最終一起攜手站在山頂,露出開心的笑容時,我的心中被無限的輕鬆和快樂充滿著,我真正地體會到了快樂的根本就是讓他人感到開心。

回到學校,我也主動嘗試著去幫助他人。在我的學校中,有一位比我低兩年級的同學,平時很少說話,被人誤以為是「呆子」,常常受到其他人的嘲笑和孤立。而我卻試著去和他聊天,在認識和瞭解的過程中,我發現他並不是別人認為的「呆子」。從此只要有機會,我就會和他在一起,漸漸地,他從過去不愛說話,逐漸變得活潑開朗;從過去被其他同學孤立,逐漸變得能夠和周圍的人和諧相處。我從心底裡為他感到高興!

2016年3月20日至27日,我又報名參加了菩提禪修的開智班課程,在學習的過程中,我愛上了「菩提開智功」。課程結束後,我依然堅持在家中修練。漸漸地,我發現自己在打冰上曲棍球時,反應速度更快了,比過去更加機敏、靈活,頭腦變得更加清晰、專注,我也因此而變得更有自信了。如今的我,仍會堅持修練「菩提開智功」,並且每晚還至少會做36個大禮拜。

學習禪修之後,我和媽媽也有了更多的共同話題。我認為,一個人來到這個世界上,就有責任去關愛、幫助他人。而我就想成為這樣的一個人,用關愛和幫助的心,為他人帶來幸福和快樂!

This young and capable practitioner has, through meditation, made his life more uplifting.

My Dharma name is Beifan, 16 years old of age (in year 2017).
I’m a high school student and my favorite sport is ice hockey.
In August 2013, I took my mother’s advice and participated in Bodhi Meditation’s Summer Camp for the first time. The comprehensive and stimulating programs during the summer camp were enjoyable and drew me to more activities from Bodhi Meditation.

In August 2015, I participated in Bodhi Meditation’s summer camp for the third time. In addition to the activities, I benefited tremendously by serving as a group leader. I have learned to take the initiative to care for others, to put myself in others’ shoes to understand their perspectives, and also to put others before self. During the prior two summer camps, I would shirk at team members who had lagged behind, such as in mountain-climbing. But this time, I felt a sense of responsibility to support the last team member and encourage those who had fallen behind. Eventually, as we surmounted the mountain and stood tall at its peak, hand-in-hand, with smiles all round, there was an overwhelming sense of relief and exhilaration. I genuinely appreciated that true happiness is derived from the joy that we bring to others.

Back in school, I started to take the initiative to help my friends. There was a schoolmate who was two grades my junior. Introverted, he was mistaken for a “nerd”, often subjected to ridicule and being ostracized. Nevertheless, I took the opportunity to chat with him. As I got to know and understand him better, I realized that he was not the “nerd” that others made him out to be. Whenever I had the chance, I would engage with him. Gradually, he began to open up and became more lively and cheerful, interacting harmoniously with his contemporaries. This was a departure from his isolated persona previously, and I was happy for him from the bottom of my heart!

I also registered and took part in a Bodhi Meditation Wisdom Awakening course, from March 20-27, 2016. In the process of learning, I was drawn to The Meditation of Awakening Wisdom. After the course, I continued to practice this meditation technique at home. Gradually, I found myself playing faster, becoming more agile and nimble, mentally sharper and more focused when playing ice hockey. As a result, my self-confidence increases. Till today, I conscientiously practice The Meditation of Awakening Wisdom and supplement this with at least 36 prostrations in the evenings.

After learning meditation, my mother and I have more topics in common. In my opinion, one’s mission in life is to care for and to help others. I want to be such a person, caring for and serving others, and bringing happiness and joy all around!

【夏至日──善調節、多靜坐】

夏至是中國歷史上最早測定出的24節氣之一,這一天太陽運行至黃經90度,北半球的白晝達到全年最長,今年的夏至日在6月21日。

夏天是養心的季節,《養生論》提到:「更宜調息靜心,常如冰雪在心,炎熱亦於吾心少減,不可以熱為熱,更生熱矣。」意思是說,在炎熱的夏天,應當調整呼吸,心神安靜,如果能想像著心中存有冰雪,便不會感到天氣那麼炎熱了,也就是我們常說的「心靜自然涼」,古人很早就懂得藉由觀想的方式來達到修身養心的目的。

夏至後,氣溫逐漸升高,人體出汗量也會隨之增加,因此人體需水量大,適當喝些綠豆湯、淡鹽水,可以清涼降火,補充體液,切不可吃太多冷飲,損傷腸胃。天氣炎熱,人的消化功能相對較弱,可以多吃清淡爽口的食物,綠葉菜和瓜果類等水分多的蔬菜水果都是不錯的選擇。

Summer Solstice – maintain a pleasant disposition, more meditative practices

The summer solstice is one of the first of 24 solar terms in Chinese history. On this day, the sun orbits to 90 degrees longitude, and regions in the northern hemisphere experience the longest day of the year. Summer solstice falls on June 21st this year.

Summer is the season for nourishing one’s heart. The Journal of Health references, “.. (to) moderate and regain a relaxed mindset; maintain a cool and “icy” demeanor; diminish the effects of the searing heat; reduce, do not aggravate the heat”. In essence, it means that during the intense heat of summer, one should regulate the breathing, maintain a calm mind and spirit, and visualize in the mind “ice and snow at the heart” to moderate against the heat. Like the common phrase, “serenity arises from a tranquil mind”, our ancestors have since early times understood the use of visualization as a technique to achieve health and spiritual benefits.

After summer solstice when the temperature gradually rises, perspiration from our body also increases correspondingly, thereby necessitating more water consumption. It is appropriate then to consume green bean soup and drink water sprinkled mildly with salt to cool and reduce the heat, and replenish bodily fluids. One must not consume too much cold beverages to the detriment of the intestines and the stomach. The hot weather inhibits the digestive function, thus one can consume light and refreshing food, such as green leafy vegetables and fruits, or those that have higher water content as part of a suitable diet.

材料:
麵條、黃瓜、燙好的綠豆芽、芝麻醬、花椒、八角、香油、薑、鹽。

作法:
1. 將花椒、八角煮開後關火。
2. 加碎薑,將水濾出。
3. 將花椒、八角水倒進芝麻醬裡,再倒入陳醋、鹽和香油。
4. 煮麵條,煮熟撈出過冷水。
5. 黃瓜洗淨切絲,碗裡放麵條、綠豆芽、黃瓜絲。
6. 加入調好的芝麻花椒八角水,喜歡辣口味的朋友可以加一點辣油哦。

There is a saying in Northern China – “Dumplings for the Winter Solstice, Noodles for the Summer Solstice” Eating cold noodles in summer helps to reduce heat in the body and increases one’s appetite. I would like to share with you a simple and delicious cold sesame noodles recipe here, which was recommended by a netizen.

Ingredients

Noodles, cucumber, blanched bean sprouts, sesame paste, pepper, star anise, sesame oil, ginger, vinegar, salt

Preparation method

1. Put pepper and star anise in water to boil and turn off the stove fire.
2. Add the shredded ginger and strain the stock.
3. Pour the pepper and star anise stock into the sesame paste and add vinegar, salt and sesame oil.
4. Cook the noodles and once cooked, rinse with cold water.
5. Wash and cut the cucumber into shreds. Place the noodles, bean sprouts and shredded cucumber into a bowl.
6. Add in the sesame paste that has been mixed with the pepper and star anise stock. For those of you who like it spicy, you may add in some chili oil.
