Does the concept of cause and effect really exist?

There was a monk named Han Hui who was very diligent in chanting and also disciplined in self-restraint. One day, as he was strolling along the streets in the city, he caught an irresistible aroma of preserved pork. As he had never eaten pork, the irresistible temptation caused him to crave for it. He thought to himself, “Why don’t I seek a one-time exemption and give myself a break from not eating pork just this once. I can always make it up by my chanting when I return to the temple and nobody will know that I have broken my restraint.”

Soon after his return to the temple, he developed serious skin breakouts at 18 points all over his body, hands and legs. The sore skin breakouts were so large and painful that he could not have his clothes on. He had to expose part of his body especially the affected areas. The skin condition worsened so much that the affected areas started to give out a foul smell. Many people stayed away from him and avoided being near him. This made him very sad.

One night, Monk Han Hui had a dream. He dreamt that 18 men were trying to take his life. He pleaded to the 18 men “I have been a good practicing monk, and have never committed bad deeds. Why do you want to take my life? Have you identified the wrong person?” The 18 men replied unanimously “In our past life, you were our leader and we were your subordinates. There were 20 of us. During an incident when 2 of us committed a crime of rape in a village, instead of punishing the 2 culprits, you killed all of us without hesitation or inquiry!”

“Your killing of 18 innocent men was unfair. The resulting hatred was so deep and it took 200 years for us to find you to seek justice. In this life of yours, you were diligent in your monastery practices in chanting and self-restraint, so you were well protected by the Dharma protectors. There was no opportunity for us to get close to killing you. We watched for every possible opportunity to take your life. Just then, the day when you broke your discipline by not refraining from eating meat, the Dharma protectors no longer shielded you, that gave us the golden opportunity to strike. These 18 sores manifested painfully on your body.”

Monk Han Hui was deeply remorseful. He knelt and repented in front of Buddha, seeking forgiveness from the 18 men. However, the 18 men could not forgive him then as they felt that he had not accumulated sufficient good deeds to dissolve the hatred. However, since Monk Han Hui was a practicing monk, the 18 men mitigated his plea with a 3-year delay in killing him. They would look for him again 3 years later.

After some time, Monk Han Hui recovered from the 18 sores. However, he had a relapse 3 years later and finally died.

Are the Heavens Fair or Unfair?

During the Song Dynasty, there was an upright official known as Justice Bao. One day while he was patrolling his county, he was surrounded by a group of villagers who blocked his path and knelt in front of him. “Justice Bao, there is something which we do not understand! There is a young man in the village who was born with a disability and his parents passed away when he was very young. He had such a tough life, but had a good heart. Yet he was killed by lightning. Why were all the good deeds he did not enough to transform his tragic life?”

Feeling that something was amiss, Justice Bao asked the villagers: “Can you share with me the story of this young man?”

The villagers continued: “This child was born with a kind heart. Due to the lack of a bridge in our village, crossing the river was a treacherous affair and many of the villagers lost their lives doing it. He saw this and he had a wish to build a bridge to allow the villagers to cross the river safely. He started to pick small rocks using his little hands from a young age. By the time he was in his teens, he had accumulated a lot of rocks. His actions touched the villagers and everybody came to help him build the bridge. Sadly though, in the midst of building the bridge, he became blind in both eyes in an unfortunate accident.

But that did not dampen the child’s aspirations. Without any complaints, he insisted on completing the bridge. Very soon, the bridge was completed. But not long after that, the village was hit by a storm and the young man was struck and killed by a bolt of lightning next to the bridge! How unfair are the heavens! Justice Bao, you have to help give us a judgment!”

After listening to the story, Justice Bao exclaimed: “This is really unfair! Let me inscribe the words ‘The Heavens are unfair’ in memory of this young man!”

Not long after that, Justice Bao completed his patrols and returned to the palace where he met with the emperor. Upon seeing him, the emperor exclaimed: “My dear Justice Bao! Do I have good news to share with you! I just had a newborn son, let me show him to you.” When Justice Bao reached out to carry the little prince, the baby stretched his hands out towards Justice Bao, with the palms facing upwards. With shock, Justice Bao saw the words “The Heavens are unfair” inscribed on the baby’s tiny hands.
Upon seeing this, Justice Bao decided to use his heavenly sight to check on the baby’s past lives. He discovered that the little prince was actually the reincarnation of the young man who was killed by lightning in the village not long ago. He went back in time to check on the young man’s previous life and found that he was a bad person who had done many evil deeds in that lifetime. Due to these evil deeds, he had accumulated karmic debt that was to be repaid over three lifetimes. In his first lifetime, he would be born as an orphan, disabled and alone; in his second lifetime he would be born blind, living in darkness his whole life; in his third lifetime, he would be struck and killed by lightning at a young age. Only then would his karmic debt be fully repaid.

But because the young man had a kind heart and persevered in building the bridge to help all the villagers, the heavens allowed him to pay off his debt in one lifetime instead of three. In a span of a few decades, he repaid all his debt and managed to be reincarnated as the prince. Three lifetimes of bad karmic debt was compressed into one instead – how good a deal is that!
The moral of the story is that the justice of the heavens will be manifested slowly but surely. As long as you perform good deeds and have kind thoughts, you will get good recompense in return.

If you like this story, please share it out. The more you share, the more fortune you will receive!

[Story of cause and effect – dish in dish]

This is a real story in Thailand.

Somewhere in Thailand, there lived a family that owned a house. Though the house was simple, the family consisting of mother, father and three lively and lovely children was happy. They did not have tap water. Drinking water was taken from a big water tank placed in front of their house.

Father liked to cook. During spring time, he would go to the pond and paddy field to catch some baby fish. He would then rear the fishes at home. When the fish grew to the thickness of a chopstick, he would cook with them. How did he prepare the dish?

People in the south like to eat “water spinach” (kangkong). Father would cut the stem of the water spinach section by section. The spinach is hollow in the middle, which together with the small live fish, were put into a pot with some water and placed on a stove. The cold water in the pot then heated up slowly. When the pot was getting hot, the fish, trying to escape from the heat, would hide inside the hollow stems. As the water grew even hotter, the fish inside the hollow stems would finally be cooked. The family could then drink the delicious soup with fish inside the water spinach. This dish is called “dish in dish”.

One day, the house built of wood and bamboo suddenly caught fire. Father, while busy trying to put the fire out, thought the safest place for his three children was the water tank. He scurried to carry the children into the tanks and put the lid back. He thought he would just leave them there for a while as a temporary measure. But the ferocious fire quickly engulfed the whole house and within a short time the house burnt down. As the children were still inside the water tank, Father hurried to carry them out of the tank but found that they had all died as the fire was too fierce. The cold water in the tank turned into boiling water and the children were scalded to death.

All their accumulated wealth, the house, three children and their happiness were all gone, together with the tragic death of their three clever and lovely children that happened before their eyes.

As a result, the husband and wife decided to live in a Buddhist monastery (becoming a monk and nun). There, they finally understood the principle of cause and effect and deeply repented. This is a very sad story. If this story could bring about some enlightenment in our daily life, then we should give ourselves a pat…
