【芒種忙,心清爽】

芒種是夏季的第三個節氣,表示仲夏時節的正式開始,太陽到達黃經75°。今年在陽曆6月5日。

芒種的諧音是「忙種」,芒種的「芒」字,是指麥類等有芒植物的收穫;芒種的「種」字,是指穀黍類作物播種的節令。意思是說夏熟的芒作物這時要抓緊收,下一輪要種的作物要抓緊種,所謂「春爭日,夏爭時」,因為麥子稍微收得晚些,就可能遇到暴雨、冰雹、龍捲風等極端天氣,使熟成的收成毀於一旦或造成嚴重損失;而要種的作物晚一天都可能到秋季長不熟,令收成大減。所以芒種這個節氣最能體現古人「依天時而動」的智慧。

芒種時節,各種瓜果蔬菜相繼上市,是瓜果蔬菜最豐盛的季節,如:櫻桃、桃子、草莓、桑葚等等,這些應時的天然美食也正是適合我們夏季身體所需要的——敗火解暑熱。但有過敏症的人不要吃桃子、西瓜、榴槤等的瓜果類。

夏季炎熱,需要提醒一點的是,不要在運動後大熱的身體狀況下猛喝涼水或冰水;也不要在身體大熱、大汗的狀態下沖涼水澡或吹冷氣,同樣會對身體造成很大的傷害。

建議可以多運動。過去少林寺有一句話:「冬練三九,夏練三伏」,冬天極冷、夏天極熱,卻是對身體、禪修最好的補養時期。夏天天亮得早,是早起走八卦的好季節。走一個小時八卦,對你這一天的精神來說是非常好了。

「心靜自然涼」,在仲夏季節多點禪修,讓自己的心清淨下來,有助於我們消除悶熱帶來的煩躁,能夠健康自在地過好每一天。

Grain in Ear (“Mang Zhong” in Mandarin) — being busy with a relaxed mind
Grain in Ear is the third solar term in summer and symbolizes the start of midsummer. During this time, the sun is at 75 degrees longitude. This year, the date falls on 5th June on the Gregorian calendar.

In Mandarin, the term “Mang Zhong” sounds similar to another term that means ‘busy farming’. The “Mang” refers to the harvesting of plants with awns; the word “Zhong” refers to the planting of grains. Put together, the term “Mang Zhong” means that farmers have to quickly harvest plants with awns that mature during summer, and quickly sow the seeds for the plants that will be planted for the next cycle. This is perfectly demonstrated by the Chinese saying “During spring, we plan our work daily; During summer, we need to plan by the hour”. Harvesting the grains too late could lead to them being destroyed in a second by a sudden bout of rain, hail or tornado. Delay the planting of new seeds by a day and the plants may not reach full maturity by autumn, thus drastically reducing the harvest. The Grain in Ear solar term is the best illustration of the ancestors’ wisdom when it comes to planning ahead for changes in the weather.

The Grain in Ear period is also the time when the supply of melons, fruits and vegetables are most bountiful, with different varieties appearing on the marketplace almost simultaneously, example: cherries, peaches, strawberries and mulberries. These ‘cool-natured’’ fruits are also exactly what our bodies need during summer. People with allergies though, should stay away from peaches, watermelons and durians etc.
During this hot summer period, another important point is that we should not gulp down large quantities of cold or iced drinks after sports, when the body is giving out tremendous amount of heat. Similarly, we should not take cold showers or go into air-conditioned spaces when the body is giving out lots of heat and sweat. This will cause serious damage to our health.

I would suggest that this is a good time to do more exercises. Winter and summer are the best times to nurture the bodies through exercising and meditation, even though one is extremely cold and the other is extremely hot. During summer, the sky brightens very early in the morning. This is the best time to practice Energy Bagua. One hour of Bagua practice in the morning will maintain your state of mind in top condition for the rest of the day.

As we meditate more during summer, our mind will calm down. This helps us to control the irritation and bad temper brought about by the hot weather. In this way, we can live everyday healthily and at ease.

因果奇談_菜中菜

這是一個泰國真實的故事。
.
在「泰國」一個地方,有這麼一戶人家,他們有著自己的房子,雖然很簡陋,爸爸,媽媽和三個活潑可愛的孩子,一家人很幸福。他們那兒沒有自來水管線,平常喝水,就是用大水缸儲存家裡的飲用水,放在房子的前面。

爸爸平常很愛做菜,春天的時候,經常到池塘裡,稻田裡,去抓剛剛出生的小魚苗,回到家裡先用清水去養,當小魚苗長成筷子般粗的時候,他就開始拿他們做菜了,怎麼做呢?
.
在他們南方都吃「空心菜」,爸爸先將空心菜,切成一段一段,它是空心的杆,然後跟小魚苗一起放在冷水鍋裡去煮,當火慢慢地熱,小魚為了躲避熱,就都鑽到空心菜的菜杆裡去逃避,結果鑽進去,水越來越熱,就煮死了。那麼大家就喝這樣一個鮮美的湯,空心菜裡面還有小魚,就叫菜中菜。

有一天,家理突然發生了火災,而他的房子因為都是木、竹的結構,爸爸忙著救火,趕急的將三個孩子,放到他認為是最安全的水缸中,並且蓋上蓋子,心想這樣也許能檔個一時吧!!但火勢快速兇猛,一下子大火漫天,把一個房屋全都燒了。爸爸後來才想到三個孩子們,都還躲在水缸中,急得要去抱孩子出來,沒想到火勢過於猛烈,孩子就像菜中菜一樣全熟了!孩子們就這樣從冷水,到熱水,全給活活燙死了。

這對夫妻一生積累的財富、房子、孩子與歡笑,什麼都沒有了,三個聰明可愛的孩子,就這樣慘死在自己的眼前。
.
所以,他們夫妻最後出家了,夫妻明白了因果的道理後,深深地懺悔。
這是一個很慘烈的故事,故事如果能給我們的生活之中,飲食起居,帶來一點啟發的話,就給自己一個掌聲吧。。。

[Story of cause and effect – dish in dish]

This is a real story in Thailand.

Somewhere in Thailand, there lived a family that owned a house. Though the house was simple, the family consisting of mother, father and three lively and lovely children was happy. They did not have tap water. Drinking water was taken from a big water tank placed in front of their house.

Father liked to cook. During spring time, he would go to the pond and paddy field to catch some baby fish. He would then rear the fishes at home. When the fish grew to the thickness of a chopstick, he would cook with them. How did he prepare the dish?

People in the south like to eat “water spinach” (kangkong). Father would cut the stem of the water spinach section by section. The spinach is hollow in the middle, which together with the small live fish, were put into a pot with some water and placed on a stove. The cold water in the pot then heated up slowly. When the pot was getting hot, the fish, trying to escape from the heat, would hide inside the hollow stems. As the water grew even hotter, the fish inside the hollow stems would finally be cooked. The family could then drink the delicious soup with fish inside the water spinach. This dish is called “dish in dish”.

One day, the house built of wood and bamboo suddenly caught fire. Father, while busy trying to put the fire out, thought the safest place for his three children was the water tank. He scurried to carry the children into the tanks and put the lid back. He thought he would just leave them there for a while as a temporary measure. But the ferocious fire quickly engulfed the whole house and within a short time the house burnt down. As the children were still inside the water tank, Father hurried to carry them out of the tank but found that they had all died as the fire was too fierce. The cold water in the tank turned into boiling water and the children were scalded to death.

All their accumulated wealth, the house, three children and their happiness were all gone, together with the tragic death of their three clever and lovely children that happened before their eyes.

As a result, the husband and wife decided to live in a Buddhist monastery (becoming a monk and nun). There, they finally understood the principle of cause and effect and deeply repented. This is a very sad story. If this story could bring about some enlightenment in our daily life, then we should give ourselves a pat…

菩提供燈,讓我雙胞胎寶寶順利度過難關。

4 年前的因緣際會,我得到一本《禪修與健康》雜誌,這本雜誌的到來,不但使我的身心狀態更健康了,更感恩的是,我的雙胞胎寶寶也因此而得救,以下是我的菩提供燈受益。
.
我的身子骨一向偏弱,加上三十多歲才懷上寶寶,我懷孕時,發現懷得是雙胞胎,一則以喜一則以優,因為我身體較弱,寶寶在第20周就開始動了。懷孕27周便早產生下了雙胞胎。
.
寶寶還沒出生時,醫生說,寶寶如果生下來時有1公斤重,還有活下來的希望。但醫生又說,我要做好心理準備,寶寶出世後可能要在保育箱待一段時間,因為寶寶的肺部和其他器官還沒發育成熟,也有可能需要動手術,但是費用相當驚人。

我為了寶寶在佛前供燈,幸運的是,兩個寶寶順利生產了,雖然他們只有32公分長,看起來就像隻小貓咪,但是各自都有1公斤重,看見寶寶的平安健康,讓我感動到流淚。
.
起初,寶寶吃奶都是1毫升 、1毫升地吃。月子期間,我每天都在擔憂寶寶的成長。那段時間,我想起了金菩提宗師和藥師佛,就經常來禪堂「供燈」,祈求佛菩薩保佑寶寶能健康地成長。令我欣慰的是,寶寶在醫院住了2個月後都能出院了,體重也大幅度進步與成長,一個是在55天后達到1.7公斤,另一個是在60天后達到1.9公斤。出院後寶寶進食狀況又更進步了。

所以,「菩提供燈」讓我受益很多,非常感恩「菩提雜誌」的緣起,在我最需要幫助的時候給予我最即時的援助。

Offering lights in Bodhi Meditation Center enabled my twin babies to pull through difficult moments.

As we offer lights to the Buddha, we light up the Buddha’s face and illuminate our paths ahead.

This is a sharing of a true story in our BaoLing, Petaling Jaya Bodhi Meditation Center in Malaysia.

Four years ago, I came across the Meditation & Health magazine by chance. This chance encounter not only improved my physical and mental health, it also saved my twin babies, for which I am truly grateful. This is the story of how I benefited from light offerings at Bodhi Meditation Center.

My health was never good and was further challenged when I became pregnant in my thirties. I was torn between happiness and worry when I learnt that I was carrying twins. True enough, due to my poor health, the babies began to be active at 20 weeks, and were prematurely born at 27 weeks.

Prior to their birth, the doctor had cautioned me that the babies must be at least 1 kg in weight for a chance to survive. The doctor also prepared me to be mentally prepared for the fact that the babies would need to be incubated for awhile as their lungs and other organs might not be fully developed. There was also a chance that they would have to undergo surgery, the cost of which would be rather substantial.

On behalf of my babies, I offered lights to the Buddha at the Meditation Center. To my joy, the delivery of my babies went well. Although they resembled little kittens at only 32cm in length, both of them weighed more than 1kg. I was so touched to tears to see the babies healthy and safe.

In the initial days, the babies drank milk by the millimeters. During my confinement period, I worried over the babies’ development everyday. I thought frequently about Grandmaster JinBodhi and Medicine Buddha, and made frequent visits to the Meditation Center to offer lights and prayed to Buddha and the Bodhisattvas to bless my babies so that they can grow up healthily. To my relief, my babies were discharged after two months. They have grown substantially during this period, with one baby weighing 1.7kg after 55 days and the other baby weighing 1.9kg after 60 days. The babies’ food intake improved tremendously after discharged.

I have greatly benefited from offering lights at Bodhi Meditation Center. I am very grateful for the chance encounter with Meditation & Health magazine, which gave me the help when I needed it most.

I hope to share this good fortune as well as Buddha’s light with all of my dearest friends and relatives.

Human is part of the social construct where we need to live together as a social group. When we do not get along well with people, we feel troubled. Often, we may find it difficult to face our family members, friends and even colleagues at work to the extent that we begin to dislike ourselves and feel helpless to get on with life.
Through meditation, such inter-personal issues will slowly diminish. As you become wiser and more awakened, you will realize that your circle of friends grow wider.

Generally, people without friends tend to feel more troubled; on the contrary, those with more friends feel happier.

「時尚禪修」—流行、健康、快樂。

快節奏的現代生活常讓都市人疲憊不堪…
而有一種清新、健康的養生方法因此正在流行,成為一種新風尚,那就是──「禪修」。
.
「禪修」使人快樂??
美國威斯康辛大學_麥迪森分校_心理學和精神病學教授_大衛遜(同時也是位於Waisman中心的「精神健康研究中心」的創建者和主席),他在美國國家科學院院刊(PNAS)上發表了論文。
.
他們認為:「禪修可以改變我們的情緒,可能讓我們更快樂。」
.
緊張、疲憊,使現代人尋求很多方法來放鬆,像出去打球、或者到戶外運動等等。 但這些方法都不如在那兒靜靜地去坐上一個鐘頭,能夠使你的疲勞很快消失,快樂、正面、健康的能量就會充滿全身。
.
「禪修」的過程,就像是我們到河裡頭舀了一桶水上來,起先是渾濁的,然後泥沙、樹葉那些重的就會沉到桶底,中間這一段相對來說比較乾淨,透明、透澈,雜質越少水也就越透澈。
.
而禪修,也是借由人們靜下來,使重的能量沉下去,通過各種通道,呼吸、出汗、排泄、大小便,都慢慢排出體外。而輕的呢,就浮上來了,浮到哪兒呢?浮到意識之外了。
.
一旦,我們的身心進入清淨狀態之後,你會將很多原來不應該去執著的煩惱,自然地過濾掉,容易將事物的真相理解得透徹,這點是很奇妙的,這也是佛法中不可思議的現象。
.
「禪修」會讓我們的心變得平靜而清澈,此時快樂感就會從心底自然升起,所以經常禪修的人,通常比不禪修的人較為「快樂」和「幸福」。

The fast pace of modern life often makes city dwellers exhausted and drained…
There is a new, healthy approach to physical well-being that is increasingly popular and trendy….. “Meditation”.

Can “meditating” brings happiness?
Davidson, Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry of University of Wisconsin’s Madison School (also Founder and President of Waisman Center’s Mental Health Research Center) has published relevant papers in the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on this.
The research shows, “meditation can transform our mood, and make us happier.”

Stress and exhaustion drives today’s man to search for ways to relax, activities like ball games or outdoor exercises, and so on. However, such efforts pale in comparison to an hour of quiet meditation that rapidly dissipates one’s fatigue and brings about bliss, positivity, and abundant healthy energy to the whole body.

“Meditation” is like when one draws a bucket of water from the river; initially muddy, then the sediment, leaves, and heavier particles sink to the bottom, leaving the centre section relatively clearer, transparent and permeated. With less impurities, the water becomes more transparent.
Thus, people practice meditation as a means to calm down, allowing stale energy to sink and gradually be removed from the body through various channels such as respiration, perspiration, and excretion. The subtle energy rises from within; where does it elevate to? It elevates to our consciousness.

Once the body and mind enter into this calm meditative state, one can naturally filter out the many unnecessary anxieties that are caused by one’s attachment, and come to comprehend the underlying truth in matters easily. This is the miraculous aspect and phenomenon of the Dharma.

“Meditation” transforms our mind, making it calm and clear, allowing bliss to elevate naturally from within. Thus, a conscientious practitioner usually experiences more bliss and happiness than a non-practitioner.

而有一種清新、健康的養生方法因此正在流行,成為一種新風尚,那就是──「禪修」。

「禪修」使人快樂??
美國威斯康辛大學_麥迪森分校_心理學和精神病學教授_大衛遜(同時也是位於Waisman中心的「精神健康研究中心」的創建者和主席),他在美國國家科學院院刊(PNAS)上發表了論文。

他們認為:「禪修可以改變我們的情緒,可能讓我們更快樂。」

緊張、疲憊,使現代人尋求很多方法來放鬆,像出去打球、或者到戶外運動等等。 但這些方法都不如在那兒靜靜地去坐上一個鐘頭,能夠使你的疲勞很快消失,快樂、正面、健康的能量就會充滿全身。

「禪修」的過程,就像是我們到河裡頭舀了一桶水上來,起先是渾濁的,然後泥沙、樹葉那些重的就會沉到桶底,中間這一段相對來說比較乾淨,透明、透澈,雜質越少水也就越透澈。

而禪修,也是借由人們靜下來,使重的能量沉下去,通過各種通道,呼吸、出汗、排泄、大小便,都慢慢排出體外。而輕的呢,就浮上來了,浮到哪兒呢?浮到意識之外了。

一旦,我們的身心進入清淨狀態之後,你會將很多原來不應該去執著的煩惱,自然地過濾掉,容易將事物的真相理解得透徹,這點是很奇妙的,這也是佛法中不可思議的現象。

「禪修」會讓我們的心變得平靜而清澈,此時快樂感就會從心底自然升起,所以經常禪修的人,通常比不禪修的人較為「快樂」和「幸福」。

Can “meditating” brings happiness?
Davidson, Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry of University of Wisconsin’s Madison School (also Founder and President of Waisman Center’s Mental Health Research Center) has published relevant papers in the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on this.
The research shows, “meditation can transform our mood, and make us happier.”

Stress and exhaustion drives today’s man to search for ways to relax, activities like ball games or outdoor exercises, and so on. However, such efforts pale in comparison to an hour of quiet meditation that rapidly dissipates one’s fatigue and brings about bliss, positivity, and abundant healthy energy to the whole body.

“Meditation” is like when one draws a bucket of water from the river; initially muddy, then the sediment, leaves, and heavier particles sink to the bottom, leaving the centre section relatively clearer, transparent and permeated. With less impurities, the water becomes more transparent.
Thus, people practice meditation as a means to calm down, allowing stale energy to sink and gradually be removed from the body through various channels such as respiration, perspiration, and excretion. The subtle energy rises from within; where does it elevate to? It elevates to our consciousness.

Once the body and mind enter into this calm meditative state, one can naturally filter out the many unnecessary anxieties that are caused by one’s attachment, and come to comprehend the underlying truth in matters easily. This is the miraculous aspect and phenomenon of the Dharma.

“Meditation” transforms our mind, making it calm and clear, allowing bliss to elevate naturally from within. Thus, a conscientious practitioner usually experiences more bliss and happiness than a non-practitioner.
