Everyone is born different. Some are born beautiful while others are born ugly. Some are open-minded, optimistic while others feel depressed and negative easily. Some are wise, healthy and proactive about life while others are fragile in spirit and give up easily when they face difficulties in life. Why is there such a big difference between people? What is the underlying source of these differences?

Perhaps some people may have this experience: a sudden inexplicable pain in their throat for no apparent reason. Some people may feel as if their head had just been severely hit and the pain cannot be alleviated by medication. What are the causes of this inexplicable pain? Is there any way to resolve it?

This coming Saturday’s Ullambana Festival, also known as Buddha Joyful Day, is a day where countless sentient beings gain liberation from sufferings through receiving blessings and guidance from Buddha. I welcome you to join me in chanting with a sincere heart. Let us call upon the immense power of Buddha to help liberate us from all worldly sufferings.

放下,才能活在當下!
曾經,許多人都有過,在昨天、在去年、或者是更久之前,在心裡頭產生過一次或若干次「仇恨」這個概念。

當時恨對方恨得讓自己不能解脫,傷痛欲絕,甚至因此住了院;因為恨,你從此不再交朋友。但是現在想想你曾經的恨,今天還有嗎?如果今天還有恨,你所恨的程度,和曾經最恨的時候相比還相同嗎?
.
其實,人生絕大多數的困擾,都是自己造成的。
許多人都曾經告訴過自己應該要「學會放下」,但人總是會在不知不覺中,讓自己活在過去,當糾結於已經無法改變的事實,就容易徒增很多煩惱,那麼如何避免自己總是糾結在過去呢,那就必須「看透事物的本質」並且努力的「活在當下」。

所以,真正困住我們的往往不是別人,而是自己,真正能夠改變自己、幫助自己跳脫人生泥淖的也只有自己。

【Newly released】 Seeing Through: The Only Way to Letting Go

Let go, so that you can live in the moment!
Perhaps, many have experienced the feeling of hatred towards someone in the past.

During that time the feeling of hatred was so intense that we were stuck in pain and even had to be hospitalized or lost our social network.
But now, think again. Do you still have the feeling of hatred today? If you still bear that feeling, what is the degree of that hatred? Is it still at similar level as before?

In fact, most of the troubles we experience in life are caused by our own act.
Many people have told themselves that they have to learn to let go. But most people tend to continue to live in the past unconsciously. When reality cannot be changed, there will be added worries. So how do we avoid living in the tangled past? We must learn to “see through the essence of things” and strive to “live in the present”.

Therefore, what really trapped us is not others, but ourselves. The only person who can really change and help pull you out from the mud pond is yourself.

【週六網絡共修預告_2018年3月3日】

在古印度的時候,有一個農民非常貧窮,他日夜期盼著自己有一天能大富大貴,有一天來了一位非常美麗的年輕女子,身上珠光寶器、美如天仙。.
她說:「我是幸運女神。」.
但..幸運女神才剛坐下,又來了一個又髒又醜,長得特別可怕的邪惡女神來敲門。
.
農民說:「我這兒剛來了個幸運女神,我沒有能力招呼妳了。」
邪惡女神說:「你如果不讓我進去,那我必須把我姐姐也帶走。」
.
「妳姐姐是誰?」農民問
「她是幸運女神。」邪惡女神說
.
這個農民突然間開悟了:「既然我承受不起壞的,還不如乾脆都不來的好,那妳們倆都走吧。」沒有妳們,我依舊能過我的逍遙日子呀!
.
晚上農民做了個夢,夢到兩位女神告訴他:
「你把我們兩個人一起請走是對的,因為你執著於一切的美好,但你沒有壞的承受力,你的惡業還沒有消除,雖然幸運女神會給你帶來一切好,但同時也會引來壞的。」唯有用「慈悲善念」,才不會引來邪惡之神。
.
所以當我們用「慈悲、善念」來念佛、懺悔,就會是功德、福德,也就是德行圓滿,你就一定會得到一切好。
.

Online Global Group Practice on March 3, 2018

Once upon a time, there lived a very poor farmer in ancient India who yearned to get rich every day. One day a very beautiful young lady dressed with precious jewels came knocking on his door.
She introduced herself, “I am the Goddess of Fortune.”
But just when the Goddess of Fortune sat down, another dirty, ugly and scary-looking evil woman came knocking on the door.
.
The farmer said, “I am busy with the Goddess of Fortune, I have no time for you.”
The Goddess of Evil replied: “If you don’t let me in, then I must take my sister away.”
.
“Who is your sister?” asked the farmer.
“She is the Goddess of Fortune.” She replied.
.
Suddenly, the farmer had a realization, “Since I cannot handle the bad, I am probably better off without both. I think both of you should leave. Without both of you, I can still lead a carefree life!”
.
That night, the farmer had a dream. In the dream, the two goddesses told him, “You did the right thing to send both of us away. You only focus on the good but do not have the ability to endure the bad. Your karmic debt has not been cleared. Although the Goddess of Fortune will bring fortune to you, bad things will follow. The only way is to have compassionate thoughts so as not to attract the Goddess of Evil.
.
Thus, when we chant and repent with compassion and kindness, we will accumulate karmic merits and virtues. As our merits and virtues accumulate, we will naturally be blessed with fortune.
.

你也想轉運、改命嗎?
.
曾經,有個中年男子,他生了嚴重的皮膚病_牛皮癬,牛皮癬長在他背上像籃球那麼大,他每天撓啊撓,都撓出血水了,尤其是越到晚上越發奇癢難受,撓了後就落下很多很多像魚鱗一樣一片片的皮屑,不論看過中醫或西醫都沒用,每天痛苦得不得了。
.
後來,有個老中醫告訴他:「您這個病要做功德才行啊」。
因為這個機緣,他跟著一個鄰居來到我們禪堂要求幹活,幫忙建禪堂,裝潢、刷漆等。
.
他每天不間斷的幫忙做苦力,過了一個多月,他兩邊的臉頰都曬黑了,牛皮癬基本上也好了五成以上。之後他更報名參加菩提的八天健身班,十期之後,那個牛皮癬就完全好了。

大家想想,是什麼原因讓他的病好的?
也許是真誠感動佛菩薩,也許是因為大量的運動量,快速了身體代謝排毒的功能?也許是禪堂的健康素食,改變了他不健康的飲食方式,也許是行善的功德,消除了他累世的因果業力?
.
無論答案是什麼,大家要的結果都是健康和快樂。

Once, there was a middle-aged man with a severe skin disorder, Psoriasis. The plagues on his back merged and grew to the size of a basketball. These lesions were so itchy and painful that he scratched daily till they bleed and develop pus. When the itch became unbearable at night, he would scratch and cause shedding of scales in sheets. He sought medical treatment from Western doctors and Chinese physicians but to no avail and he continued to suffer daily.

Later, an old Chinese physician told him, “You need to do more good deeds to cure this disease.” He adhered to his advice and followed a neighbor to our meditation hall to help in the renovation and painting.

He worked hard every day. After a month, his cheeks became tanned but his skin condition improved by more than 50 percent. He subsequently attended the 8-day Health and Fitness class. After the tenth session, his pretty much recovered.

Let’s ponder the reasons behind his recovery. Perhaps it was his sincerity that moved Buddha and bodhisattvas. Perhaps it was the strenuous physical activities that expedited his metabolism and detoxification? Perhaps it was the center’s vegetarian diet that changed his unhealthy diet, or his accumulation of merits that eliminated his karmic debts?

Whatever the answer is, everyone hopes for health and happiness.
Let’s explore together how to change our “destiny” in this coming Saturday’s group practice. Welcome everyone to join us.

問:「禪修為什麼能帶來健康的效果呢?」(2017年9月16日)

十幾年前,我剛開始在溫哥華傳授禪修的時候,不同文化、種族的人也都問過我這個問題。當時我用了一個很簡單、很粗淺的方法做了一個提示:「用一個透明的桶,到河流裡盛一桶水上來,注意觀察,通常過了兩個小時之後,泥沙等重的東西會沉到水底、輕的東西會漂到水面、而中間的那一層水則相對比較乾淨,我們只要擷取中間的部分,就能得到相對乾淨的水了。」

而禪修的最初過程也是如此,因為,咱們大腦的清淨與否,與我們的身體健康有著絕對的關係。但是該如何通過「禪修」,讓身體調整成平衡的狀態,讓身體方方面面都能恢復健康呢?

Ten years ago, when I first started teaching meditation in Vancouver, I was often asked this question by people of different cultures and ethnic groups. I used a very simplistic way to illustrate: “Fill a transparent pail with a bucket of water from the river and observe. Usually after two hours, the heavier particles like mud and sand will sink to the bottom while lighter particles will float to the water surface, leaving the middle layer of water relatively clean and clear.”

The same is true for meditation. When our mind is tranquil, our physical health will improve. So how can we gain health and balance in life through meditation?

慈悲的根基 (2017年9月9日)

你相信慈悲能讓你一帆風順,
而自私會給自己帶來疾病和災難?
幾年前我碰過這麼一個真實故事……
.
有一位懶媳婦,因為不喜歡和婆婆一起住,因此婚後就和老公搬到另一個城市裡去生活,把年歲已大的婆婆獨自一人給留在了老家。有一天,婆婆病倒了,求救電話來了,兒子也希望老婆能回家去照顧母親。但是兒媳婦接了電話卻回說:「媽,您病倒了啊?真對不起,我目前摔壞了腿,正在腿痛,我回不了老家、伺候不了您啊。」

其實媳婦本來沒這個事,就為了逃避照顧生病的婆婆撒下的謊言,沒多久,大概兩個月後,媳婦真摔了一跤!莫名其妙地把膝蓋骨給摔碎了,這下真的躺在家裡動彈不得了。
.
大家想想,媳婦兒這個病是怎麼來的?
這是以怨報德,沒有想到對方的恩情啊!當你能夠用慈悲心去愛天下人,愛你的婆婆、愛和你有關係的這些人,想到他們的好處。從這一剎那開始,你的心中有了善的正向能量,溫暖你的心房,當正面能量增強了、負面能量就自動減退,這是必然的!你的疾病也就開始好轉、乃至痊癒了。
.
因此,如果我們想化解自身的疾病,必須要從慈悲心的建立開始,從病源上去化解,這才是解決疾病煩惱的根本之道。
.

Selfishness brings sickness and disaster, compassion brings health and auspiciousness?

A person had such an experience: her mother-in-law was sick and needed someone to look after. As both were living in two different cities, her husband, the son, hoped that she would go over to care for his mother. When the sickly mother called for help, the daughter-in-law lied, “Mother, so sorry to hear that you are sick. I just had a fall and broke my leg. It’s hurting and I can’t attend to you.” Two months later, she really had a fall and injured her knee. As a result, she had to stay in bed.

How did this injury come about? When we return kindness with ingratitude! Open your heart and love the world with compassion. Love your mother-in-law and those related to you. Think of their good points and your heart will start to warm up. From this moment on, you will start to feel positive energy generating from within. When positive energy rises, negative energy will certainly diminish. Your illness will begin to heal and you may even gain full recovery.

If we want to recover from our illness, we need to cultivate compassion. We need to get to the source to resolve the fundamental cause.
Why is compassion the most important reason to health? Let us explore “The Foundation of Compassion” in greater depth during this Saturday’s group practice.
