I finally meet the Buddha! ?

I was chatting with a young internet friend a few days ago:

“Thank you, Master. I have finally meet the Buddha!”

“Oh? Did Buddha appear in front of you?” I asked curiously.

“Something like that. But it did not happen while I was meditating, neither did Buddha appear in the form of clouds. In fact, it happened in real life.

Since young, I have always visited temples with my grandmother who was a devout Buddhist. To the young boy that I was at that time, the tall Buddhist figures always seemed distant and imposing – untouchable up on the altars.

A few days ago, I was helping to place hot water bottles around my dad in bed when he reached out and caressed my head to show his appreciation. At that moment, I froze. It suddenly occurred to me how little I had done for him. Looking back, I realize now that the only thing I can do for my parents is by paying them occasional visits.

When I was growing up, whenever it became chilly, my parents would always place hot water bottles to keep me warm in bed. During the times that I was sick, I would wake up in the middle of the night to see them replacing the water in the bottles to ensure that I remain warm. They always did their best to get me what I wanted, no matter how far they had to travel.

I remember a time when my dad went out in heavy rain to search for a specific musical instrument that I needed for my music class the following day. He was thoroughly soaked when he came back.

My head was filled with images of all the things my parents had done for me…

As I looked at my dad’s face, I realized that the look of compassionate love on his face was as selfless as any Buddha or Bodhisattvas. It was the look of someone who is willing to sacrifice anything for me. In my mind, I felt as if I have been touched by the soft smiling gaze of Buddha, a gaze that is so identical to my dad’s.

I understood then why Master always told us that our parents are the Buddha and Bodhisattvas in our lives. They protect and care for us endlessly. How is their love any different from the Buddha’s or Bodhisattvas’? They are really the Buddha and Bodhisattvas in our lives!

Don’t you agree with me that I have finally met the Buddha in my life?”

I have mixed feelings after hearing this story. There will always be that few moments when we remember how good our parents have been to us, how they have nurtured us and brought us up. If you have yet to discover such a moment, take the time to return home often. That moment may just occur the next time that you are home.

My wish is for all children, young and old, to discover this moment and meet with the Buddha in their lives soon.

Mother’s Day,what is the best gift for our mother?

There was a practitioner who asked me in FB for gift ideas for mothers on Mother’s Day.

Some years back, there was a practitioner in Canada who chanted 2 hours every evening at Canada Bodhi Meditation centre. He appeared to be in good health and would often come in office suits before changing to casual wear for his daily chanting.

I saw him at the centre once and asked: “what is your reason for chanting?”

He replied: “I came from a single parent family. My mother exhausted all means to send me abroad for studies and work but she remained in Mainland China herself. Though my mother is being taken care of by my younger brother’s family, her health is not good. I am very worried and wished to accompany and take care of her at home but she is adamant and refused to let me go back. She reassured me that my younger brother is by her side and his wife can take care of her. She wanted me to concentrate on my career so that I can have great career accomplishment. I wanted to fetch her over to Canada, find the best doctor for her but she always gave the excuse that her health is not very good and do not wish to travel.”

The practitioner was troubled over this for a long time. On one occasion, he came across my teaching on the internet “Chanting for our loved ones” and knew that we can chant for our loved ones to gain Buddha’s blessings. Desperate and out of ideas, he decided to give it a try.
He went to the nearest Bodhi meditation centre after work and started chanting for his mother on a daily basis. He would tell Buddha: My mother brought me up painstakingly but I am not by her side and cannot take care of her now. I sincerely pray and hope that Buddha can bless her with good health.

His mother had always been weak, her voice can even be heard quivering over the telephone whenever they chatted. However, after just one month of chanting for his mother, the practitioner discovered that his mother’s voice had grown louder and clearer. Eventually, his mother told him she is able to run errands on her own outside without any help. Upon hearing this, the practitioner was very happy and became more focused in his daily chanting: he prayed for Buddha’s help in taking care of his mother.

I was very happy after hearing his story and encouraged him: “The power of chanting is incredible. Do persist!”

When I saw him one year later, he was with an old lady. Though the old lady has some white hair, she appeared energetic and physically strong. He introduced: “Master, this is my mother. Her health is in excellent state and she is staying with me in Canada now. Currently, she is a regular at Bodhi Meditation centre, doing chanting and practicing Energy Bagua!” The old lady upon hearing her son’s words, realized that I am his master, held my hand and said with a strong dialect slang: “Master, your techniques are excellent, I started to grow new hair and some white hairs even turned black! Look! She pointed at some hair and even squat and stood up a few times to show me her mobility. Clearly, she is very healthy and physically mobile now.

I asked the practitioner’s mother: “How old are you?”

She smilingly replied:”I am turning 70! But my limbs are as mobile as when I was 50 years old!”

I looked at the happy smiles on both their faces and lamented on the miraculous giving of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. In the process of giving, Buddha and Bodhisattvas did not lose a single thing. All they required from us is our sincerity!

So, what do you think is the best gift for our mothers?

When you are unable to take care of your mother yourself, pray to Buddha sincerely and seek for their blessings for your mothers!
