Cultivating humility

When one’s path is obstacle-laden, one needs to put humility at the fore;
When one’s path is smooth, one needs to work three times harder at humility.
.
The above is one of the aphorisms from the book Caigentan that urged for cultivation of humility toward all, in times of adversity and even more so in times of fortune.
.
Ever heard of the Six Feet Lane in Tongcheng, Anhui, and wondered about its beginnings?
During the Qing dynasty, there was an illustrious Zhang family, whose patriarchs served as Prime Ministers for three generations. This family disputed with his neighbor over the surrounding land in order to build his villa. Neither side was prepared to give way over the three feet border of land. The situation escalated to the Judicial Court.
.
The Zhang family, being senior officials, was not afraid of the lawsuit. Prime Minister Zhang had his aide reach out in a letter to the county head in the Capital to pass the judgement in favor of the Zhang family.
.
Having received and read the letter, the county head responded cryptically, “… if you can reach out over thousands of miles to seek a favor, is it too much to give up a three feet wide space? The thousand-mile glorious Great Wall is clear for all to see, yet how many have any idea how its originator Emperor Qin look like?”
.
Upon reading the response, Prime Minister Zhang immediately stopped pursuing the case, and offered the three feet wide space to his neighbor as a gesture of magnanimity. The neighbor, surprised by the change of heart, reciprocated by giving up another three feet of space, bringing the matter to rest. This story thereafter came to be known as the “Six Feet Lane” legend.
.
Another tale involved a Prince Guo Ziyi《郭子仪》during the Tang dynasty. Emerging victorious from a battle and in celebratory spirits, the Prince wanted to build a villa and decided to supervise its construction. He would constantly remind the workers to perform and not fail in their mission. The workers, tired of the incessant badgering, took to reassure the Prince that his family of three generations in Chang’an had been specializing in masonry work. In fact, they had constructed countless villas and never had one collapsed. The houses had also outlasted several owners! From that instance, Prince Guo stopped hassling the workers.
.
Through these simple yet philosophical occurrences, Prime Minister Zhang and Prince Guo learnt their lessons in humility.
Humility is a great virtue; when one takes the first step towards humility by giving way and giving selflessly, one benefits and gains greater wisdom.

Delicacies of Spring – the Spring Pancake

The arrival of Spring heralds the resumption of animal activities which helps sprout fresh shoots from plants.
The Spring Pancake is a traditional snack during this season. In the early days, the Spring Pancake consists of the pancake with seasonal vegetables served on a plate, known as the “Spring Plate” or “Five-flavor Plate”. It comprised 5 types of vegetables carefully selected to provide a balanced taste. At the same time, the snack helps nourish the body and optimize metabolism. The fresh vegetables in the snack ingredients enhance the well-being and allow one to savor the taste of Spring.
.
Renowned literary master Du Fu (杜甫) referenced the Spring Pancake in one of his works, literally translated as “Spring, the Spring Pancake and its fine ingredients”. Indeed, the vegetables in the Spring Pancake filling are delicately prepared to appeal to the taste buds. While it is customary to mark the coming of Spring, the Spring Pancake can, nonetheless, be enjoyed at all times. Particular attention is paid to how one enjoys the pancake: to carefully roll the pancake and consume it from one tip (head) to the other end (tail). It is believed that this ensures one enjoys a smooth progression from beginning to the end of one’s ventures. In recent times, the Spring Pancake has become more intricate due to enhanced baking techniques and a variety of fillings to appeal to a wider crowd.

We are pleased to share the recipe below.
.
Ingredients
1 . 3 sheets of pancake skin
2 . 1 Carrot
3 . Green bean sprouts – 300 g
4 . Few black fungus (pre-soaked)
6 . Sesame oil, cooking oil, salt, soy sauce, pepper-corns
.
Method:
1 . Heat some cooking oil in the pan. Fry the pancake in the pan on medium heat (not too hot) pan, flipping after a minute or so when the middle of the pancake rises slightly.
2.Shred the carrot; rinse the green bean sprouts; and rinse and cut the fungus into strips.
3. With some oil in the pan, stir fry the pepper corns.
4. Add in carrots, green bean sprouts, fungus strips and stir-fry.
5. Add salt, soya sauce, sesame oil according to individual taste and stir-fry the ingredients evenly.
According to preferences, one can also use vegetables such as cabbage, potatoes, and include fried sesame for more flavor.
6. Place the prepared fillings onto the pancake before rolling it up.
Voila, the Spring Pancake is now ready!
.
.
The effort of preparation of the ingredients, making the pancake and finally rolling the pancake with appetizing vegetables filling before savoring the pancake is most gratifying. There is much delight in this back-to-basics approach – Try it!

Today is the twelfth day since we started chanting. Many fellow practitioners have shared their amazing experiences with me. The compassionate Guanyin Bodhisattva has vowed to help all who call out to her. I am sure that those of you who have demonstrated your sincerity would have gotten your wishes fulfilled.
.
I welcome all of you to share your amazing 12-day chanting journey here. If you have questions regarding your practice, please feel free to raise them here as well. I wish all of you good fortune and happiness.
.
Fellow practitioner 1 – Chanting transformed my husband and mother-in-law, bringing warmth and tranquility to my home.
I started chanting on 25th February, visualizing Master seated on a golden lotus flower in front of me. As I visualized myself prostrating to Master, I imagined my husband and mother-in-law receiving my prostrations as well. I wished they would be more understanding and supportive of me practicing the Dharma. After a few days of chanting, incredible things happened. My husband helped me with the housework proactively and wears a big smile on his face all the time. Even my mother-in-law has stopped frowning at me. Master, thank you so much for your blessings!
.
Fellow practitioner 2 – Meditation has made me more beautiful.
While I was brushing my teeth on the second day of practice, I could not believe what I saw in the mirror. My eyes have grown bigger and my nose has become a bit sharper! I remember Master once said that offering flowers regularly to Buddha would help us become younger and more beautiful. Not only has meditation made me a kinder and more compassionate person, it has made me younger too!
.
Fellow practitioner 3 – Chanting has cured my headache.
I was feeling down yesterday due to a bad headache. After some deliberation, I decided to persevere with my chanting practice. Amazingly, my headache started to ease after 10 min of chanting, and it was totally gone by the end of the hour! I felt so happy. Not only did I have a great sleep that night, good mood followed me into the next day!
.
Fellow practitioner 4 – Change in mindset brings me good fortune.
Before I started meditating, I was a greedy and selfish individual who has never offered to help anybody. After I started mediating, I listened to Master’s teachings regularly and learned a lot from his teachings. My greedy and selfish nature slowly transformed into one that is compassionate and kind. Now, I am always willing to help other people, even if it means I have less time to rest or to spend with my child who is sick. The thought of being able to help someone truly makes me happy. As a result of my change in mindset, I am now blessed with good fortune. Troubles at home have fortuitously resolved on their own. I tell myself that I have to practice even harder, until every cell in my body is transformed into Bodhisattva’s smiling face!
.
Fellow practitioner 5 – Life’s miracles from meditation practice.
I still remember how a fellow practitioner inspired my first sincere offering to Master. He was laid off during a time when the economy was bad, and he made ends meet subsequently through being a shoe-shiner in China. He made a vow to offer to Master the money he received from his first customer everyday, so that more people can benefit from Master’s teachings. I was genuinely touched by his sincerity and I told myself: “It does not matter that I do not have a job. Let me join in Master’s plan to help others by saving one dollar from my lunch everyday!” It has been many years since then, and the person who benefited the most all these years is myself! As Master once said, “To help others is to help yourself!” I have since found a well-paid job, which amazed even my daughter. She could not believe that with my lousy English, I could still find such a job in America. I told her that this is all thanks to Master, who taught us how to transform our lives.
.
Thank you for all your sharing of your practice.
Guanyin Bodhisattva has twelve vows’ to bestow all sentient beings with wisdom, compassion, and blessings. May every one’s wishes be fulfilled.

Learn from the Buddha – Be a loving and righteous person
.
What make you an enlightened being? Some people think that detached and heartless is enlightenment. But in reality, it is like dead wood, bringing tremendous pain! The Buddhist concept of “severance of all attachment” refers to the severance of one’s individual desire, greed and affection. Hence we need to be able to distinguish what is self-love in order to understand true compassion.
.
If Shakyamuni Buddha has no universal love, why does he spend relentless time spreading the dharma to teach sentient beings how to end suffering? It is our ignorance that prevented us from seeing the truth. Hence, Buddhism is all about universal love and compassion. I hope that from today onwards, every Bodhi disciple will strive to be the most compassionate, grateful and diligent cultivator.

Energy and Bagua

Energy Bagua is a very unique method of practice and is especially beneficial for people with health problems. My master once told me that Energy Bagua may be really helpful in the prevention and recovery of cancer. Hence, we are very fortunate to be able to learn this practice.

In ancient China, people believed that the sky was round. The circular motions in sports represented the orbits of the celestial bodies in the universe. It was believed that as we emulate the celestial movement, we would accumulate vital energy from the universe, which in turn would give us good health. In Energy Bagua, not only do we walk in circles, our arms and legs also move in arcs. This helps us to accumulate vital energy, which brings us longevity.

Energy Bagua is truly beneficial to health. For full benefits, we will need to practice for at least 108 hours, with not more than 1 or 2 hours each day. That will take 108 days. For optimal benefit, it is best to practice at the same time everyday. For instance, you can practice at five, six, seven, eight, nine or ten o’clock every morning and stick to that time.

According to the theory of cosmic energy, mornings are the best time to practice. As the sun rises, vital energy of the universe is on the rise, which brings benefits to our health. Practicing in the afternoon, in comparison, is not as good as practicing in the morning.

To experience the full benefits from any type of practice, perseverance is key. If we can practice an hour of Bagua, followed by an hour of chanting everyday, compassion will come naturally to us. We may even get enlightened about the universal truths. Only when we understand those truths will we feel peaceful and at ease.

【 Grandmaster JinBodhi’s Aphorism】

The path to Buddhahood is through cultivation.
When you attain maximum purity, you will be like diamond – strongest in its purest form.
The composite of diamond is nothing but carbon. So is the cultivation of Buddha dharma.
