Notice on Online Global Group Practice (Saturday, May 13, 2017)

In a remote village, there lived an ordinary mother and her son. They were very poor but the son was very diligent. During one of the state examinations, he performed really well and earned himself the top scholar position and was subsequently offered a high ranking official role with the court. With luck on his side, he even married the daughter of a wealthy and powerful court official. Though he led a comfortable life, he did not return to his village to fetch his elderly mother to the city.

As his mother missed her son dearly, she decided to search for him in the city. Given his position in the court, she managed to locate him without much effort. The son, upon seeing his shabbily dressed mother, felt ashamed and refused to acknowledge her. The daughter-in-law was a virtuous lady with good upbringing. Upon seeing this, she reminded her husband on the importance of filial piety and persuaded him to take care of his mother. The son, a kind person by nature, finally realized his mistake and regretted his earlier reaction. Together with his wife, they brought the mother home to live with them for the rest of her life.

We tend to take our mother’s endless love for granted but remember clearly the little helps rendered by others. In fact many of our life’s obstacles and diseases are due to our lack of virtues, kindness or filial piety.
Our destiny today is closely linked to our ancestors and parents. If we want to enjoy good fortune, we must know how to repay our parents for their kindness.

With Mother’s day approaching, I hope everyone will join me this coming Saturday to chant for our mother. Let us chant with sincerity and gratitude. May they be blessed with health, auspiciousness and happiness!

Little deer with a kind heart
– A rare fortuitous encounter

I would like to share with you a story. In the Year 1920, in a village in Guìzhōu of China, a family with the surname of Wei lived in the valley. One day when the family were working in the courtyard of their home, a terrified little deer which was chased by hunters leaped and entered the family’s courtyard.

The man, who was the head of the family, quickly captured the deer and tied it up with a rope so that it would not escape. The man said, “Bring a knife here! We will have a sumptuous dinner tonight.” As the deer was about to be slaughtered by the man, his daughter who had a compassionate heart pleaded with the father, “Dad, please do not kill the little deer. It is crying and its father and mother are waiting for it to go home.”

The wife was also compassionate and she too pleaded for leniency for the deer. The man, who basically was kind in heart, followed the advice of his daughter and wife, and intended to release the little deer.

The wife said, ” Don’t release the deer first!”. She went into the house and returned with a red silk ribbon. She tied the red ribbon around the deer’s neck as an identity.

Actually there was a traditional practice among the villagers on liberation of animals. When an animal, for example, a sheep was liberated, the liberator would pierce a hole in the sheep’s ear and tie a red ribbon to indicate to others that the life of the sheep had been liberated by someone in the village. With this common understanding, other villagers would not capture or kill the animal. The little deer was liberated after the wife tied a red ribbon around its neck.

A few years later, one day there was a severe storm in the village. When the heavy rain stopped, dark cloud still shrouded the sky. Sunlight pierced through the cloud creating a spectacular scene in the sky.

The daughter saw this scene and exclaimed, “Mom and dad, come out of the house quickly! Look at the strange sun!” When the whole family were looking at the sun, the daughter suddenly realized there was a deer standing on the slope outside their courtyard. It was the one they had released as it had a red ribbon around its neck, except that the deer has grown larger in size.

The daughter said “Let’s go look at the little deer we liberated.” The whole family went out to chase after the deer. As soon as they left the courtyard of their house, the mountain slope behind their house collapsed, slid and rolled downwards and soon buried their house. The family then realized that the liberated deer had come to save their lives! The family members were greatly surprised and elated.

This episode soon spread and passed on widely throughout the village. Soon no one in the village would kill the deers as they believed these deers possess power of prediction. Actually, the deer does has psychic power as compared with a human being, even though it does not speak.

We learn from this story that a compassionate thought probably had saved the whole family from the calamity and preserved their lives. When your heart hovers a compassionate thought, and when you treat all beings with moral intentions, these beings will return to help you when you are in danger one day. This is also the reason why we do not encourage killing of animals. Instead, we should develop good and positive affinities with these animals.

Mother’s Day,what is the best gift for our mother?

There was a practitioner who asked me in FB for gift ideas for mothers on Mother’s Day.

Some years back, there was a practitioner in Canada who chanted 2 hours every evening at Canada Bodhi Meditation centre. He appeared to be in good health and would often come in office suits before changing to casual wear for his daily chanting.

I saw him at the centre once and asked: “what is your reason for chanting?”

He replied: “I came from a single parent family. My mother exhausted all means to send me abroad for studies and work but she remained in Mainland China herself. Though my mother is being taken care of by my younger brother’s family, her health is not good. I am very worried and wished to accompany and take care of her at home but she is adamant and refused to let me go back. She reassured me that my younger brother is by her side and his wife can take care of her. She wanted me to concentrate on my career so that I can have great career accomplishment. I wanted to fetch her over to Canada, find the best doctor for her but she always gave the excuse that her health is not very good and do not wish to travel.”

The practitioner was troubled over this for a long time. On one occasion, he came across my teaching on the internet “Chanting for our loved ones” and knew that we can chant for our loved ones to gain Buddha’s blessings. Desperate and out of ideas, he decided to give it a try.
He went to the nearest Bodhi meditation centre after work and started chanting for his mother on a daily basis. He would tell Buddha: My mother brought me up painstakingly but I am not by her side and cannot take care of her now. I sincerely pray and hope that Buddha can bless her with good health.

His mother had always been weak, her voice can even be heard quivering over the telephone whenever they chatted. However, after just one month of chanting for his mother, the practitioner discovered that his mother’s voice had grown louder and clearer. Eventually, his mother told him she is able to run errands on her own outside without any help. Upon hearing this, the practitioner was very happy and became more focused in his daily chanting: he prayed for Buddha’s help in taking care of his mother.

I was very happy after hearing his story and encouraged him: “The power of chanting is incredible. Do persist!”

When I saw him one year later, he was with an old lady. Though the old lady has some white hair, she appeared energetic and physically strong. He introduced: “Master, this is my mother. Her health is in excellent state and she is staying with me in Canada now. Currently, she is a regular at Bodhi Meditation centre, doing chanting and practicing Energy Bagua!” The old lady upon hearing her son’s words, realized that I am his master, held my hand and said with a strong dialect slang: “Master, your techniques are excellent, I started to grow new hair and some white hairs even turned black! Look! She pointed at some hair and even squat and stood up a few times to show me her mobility. Clearly, she is very healthy and physically mobile now.

I asked the practitioner’s mother: “How old are you?”

She smilingly replied:”I am turning 70! But my limbs are as mobile as when I was 50 years old!”

I looked at the happy smiles on both their faces and lamented on the miraculous giving of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. In the process of giving, Buddha and Bodhisattvas did not lose a single thing. All they required from us is our sincerity!

So, what do you think is the best gift for our mothers?

When you are unable to take care of your mother yourself, pray to Buddha sincerely and seek for their blessings for your mothers!

The key to a happy and lasting relationship lies in a compliment

The first sentence in a romance novel I’ve seen stated that:

「If he treats me a little better, gives me a smile, or even if he is pretending, I will not forsake him.」

I was stunned by this quote, did some research and found that most women agree to this. With just a compliment, she will happily and willingly slog for you.

Beginning of Summer
Summer thread, Protects the wearers.

5th of May, 2017 –First day of Summer. This solar term is a time of myriad growth hence is termed “The commencement of Summer”.

The Summer festival has an important tradition–(Summer strings), to tie a thread made up of 5 colored strings around the wrist of children, termed “Longevity thread”. It can help to eliminate calamities and illnesses of children , keep them healthy and safe. Bodhi Meditation also has our own 5 colored thread. Wearers can choose to wear them around their neck or wrist and even wear them with Dzi beads. Five coloured thread can also be hung in cars, latches of house doors or tied to bags.

Five coloured threads can be tied to wrists and ankles of new born babies. These threads serve to bless the entire family with safety and auspiciousness.
