Master loves to eat rotten apples

In China, there’s a couple who are my disciples. They had lost their jobs, and life was challenging. Living in austerity then, they could only pray to the Gods with a simple picture of mine, a broken candle, a joss stick and three rotten apples as offerings.

The couple pinned all their hopes on their only child, and wished he could make it to the university. However, the child was not motivated and would not listen. His mother earnestly prayed to Buddha, Bodhisattva, and I, “My child is almost 17 years old and is due to enter the university; yet his studies is weak and he’s playful. Master, please show mercy and shower your blessings on him so that he can make it to the university!

The couple devotedly made the same offerings daily. After three months, the child sat for his examination. He felt confident and assured his parents, “When I sat for the paper, it felt like a walk in the park. Friends who had previously done better than me were nervous. I could see that their hands were trembling, while I remained calm. Mum, why was that so? I could answer the questions with ease and felt confident about passing the exam.”

The mother half-believed his words. When the results were released, the child managed to gain admission into the university, and both the parents were elated and relieved. Since then, the mother spread the word that Master loves to eat rotten apples! Well, the fact is; it was the sincerity of the parents and the conscientious prayers that moved the Heaven. Do you know – when we pray to the Buddha single-mindedly with a sincere heart, we can receive innumerable blessings.

“Ching Ming”
─ Ching Ming, a time to grow melons and plant beans

Spring, being the first of the four seasons, is deemed to be the most important by many people. It is also the season with the largest number of festivals. For these reasons, early spring is the best time to be making plans of what to cultivate in the fields, and also which places to visit during the festivals. To the Chinese community, the most important spring festival that falls in the beautiful months of March and April is the Ching Ming (also commonly known as “Qing Ming”) festival. This is the festival during which the Chinese pay their respects to their ancestors. This year’s Qing Ming festival – which occurs when the sun reaches 15 degrees of the celestial longitude – falls on the 4th day of the 4th month in the Gregorian calendar.

Other than being a festival, Ching Ming is also one of the twenty-four solar terms. There is this saying regarding Ching Ming: “All things that grow during this time are both bright and clean. This is why this day is called Ching Ming – Ching (“Qing”) represents cleanliness and Ming represents radiance.” From this we can see the close link between Ching Ming and agricultural cultivation. In the agricultural world, the farmers have another saying: “Ching Ming is the best time to grow your melons and plant your seeds”.

In the fifteen days after the Spring Equinox, temperatures will start to rise and rain will fall in abundance. This is the best time to work on your crop cultivations. As the breeze blows and the rain falls, shoots will thrive. The sight of farmers busy sowing their seeds and transplanting their seedlings will be prevalent everywhere during this period of time, signaling the start of spring cultivation.

Ching Ming Festival is also about the Chinese tradition of expressing our respects to the ancestors via formal rituals. The tomb sweeping tradition inculcates the spirit of filial piety and emphasizes the importance of familial relations. The best that we can do for our ancestors during this time is to transfer to them the positive karmic merits from chanting sincerely, light offering and praying to the Buddha and Bodhisattvas to light up their paths. I welcome all of you to visit the Bodhi Meditation Centers on this day to chant and to make light offerings. Not only will our ancestors receive the blessings and guidance from the Buddha, we will also be blessed with safety and good fortune.

Let go and be liberated

Ching Ming (Qing Ming) Festival is just a few days away and it is at occasions like this that we miss our dear ones the most. A fellow practitioner left me a message asking for advice on how to handle the parting of loved ones. I would like discussion this here during this period when all of us are commemorating our ancestors and the sense of longing for our loved ones is at the deepest.

This is what the fellow practitioner asked:
“My grandma passed away a year ago and her passing left me deeply heartbroken. Till today, I have not been able to get over it and I can still sense her presence. I long deeply to return to the time when my grandma was still alive. I became withdrawn, frequently hiding in a corner to cry. I felt totally alone and unloved in this world.”

Yearning breaks the cycle of reincarnation…
All of us have loved and been loved in our lives. It is not easy to let go of the bonds that were formed, regardless of whether it is romantic, platonic or familial love. As difficult as it is though, we still have to let go one of these days.
Do you know the effects on your grandma when you keep thinking about and yearning for her? You will harm her! When you miss her and think about her daily, it is as if she is really right by your side. She will be disturbed and will not be able to leave to be reborn in peace.

Maybe she is supposed to be reborn into a good family, as a healthy and pretty child with good fortune. Your constant yearning for her will hold her back. She will keep procrastinating her departure, and the cycle of reincarnation will be broken. Eventually she will end up in a place that she was never supposed to be. When that happens, both you and your grandma will suffer. This is why you have to learn to let go. Instead of holding on, give her lots and lots of blessings from the bottom of your heart and let her go to where she is supposed to be.

Love is about letting go ~
Therefore, regardless of how close you are to that person, or how much you love her, you have to let go once she is gone. Not only do you have to let go, you have to live your life well. When you yearn constantly for her, you are disturbing her. Let her leave without any attachments, give your blessings to her and pray that she gets reborn into a good family. Pray that she will have a good life, with no sufferings. After that, do not think about her any more.

All of us know that we have to be respectful towards our parents and our ancestors, but not everyone knows the true meaning of the word “respect”. Crying and yearning for a loved one for ten years after she has passed on will prevent her from moving on. Your mental state breaks down, and your loved one is not able to get reborn in peace. So the best thing to do is to forget and let it all go! Offer lights to Buddha for your loved one and pray for Buddha to light up her path. Pray that she gets reborn into a family of good fortune.

If you would like your ancestors and loved ones to be at ease, you have to do what you need to do and learn what you need to learn. That is the only way for them to be happy.

Light Offerings and Filial Piety

What do we actually get from light offerings to the Buddha?

Firstly, our minds are brightened up because when we make a prayer we will be facing a brightly lit Buddha with a solemn, beautiful and compassionate appearance. In addition, we will be guided when faced with obstacles or have worries in our life journey. Secondly, we will have increased wisdom and be able to do the things that others cannot. There should also be success if we are seeking employment. Thirdly, the Buddha will protect us from demonic attack and illnesses and also clear away our bad karma.

In fact, we should seize the opportunity to offer a lamp on behalf of our ancestors during this Qing Ming Festival. Because by doing so, we are sending warmth, illumination and merits to them as the Buddha’s light will illuminate their afterlives, eradicate their bad karma and clear away obstacles in order that they can be guided by the Buddha and Bodhisattvas to Pureland and be liberated from samsaric transmigration.

Simultaneously, the fire and radiating light from the Buddha will bless us – the compassionate ones who made the light offerings, with joy, health, happiness, peace, perfection and wisdom. For the ones that we love and respect, during this festival, they will also receive blessings and be sheltered by the radiating light and energy from the Buddha.

The Legend of Dzi Bead – Evil eye

It is said that there is a kind of precious jewel which fell from heaven. This special jewel is deemed as the heaven’s bead which can be used to protect against disasters and accumulate wealth and fortune. As the beads are so precious and respected, it is called “Dzi bead”.

Dzi bead, also known as “heaven’s pearl”, originated from greater Asia region. The circles on the Dzi beads represent “eyes”. Why are the Dzi beads etched with “eyes”? Ancient folk legend has this saying that there was a hideous demon with bloody red and green eyes, sucking the soul and heart of people, possessing them and causing them to fall sick.

To counteract this, the folk healers and wizards painted the world’s largest eye of the demon, known as “evil eye”. If you bless and wear it, it will protect you against the evil eye. It means: your eyes are scary, but mine are scarier than yours. That probably marks the beginning of Dzi bead.

Also, in the past, due of the lack of medicine, people were more prone to disease. Hence, they had to resort to seeking folk witchcraft for treatment and Dzi beads were widely used as part of the traditional curative ritual.

If a Dzi bead is more than 200 years old, and has been used and chanted by monks and Buddhist practitioners, it would have carried with it a kind of compassionate energy and power and will bless and protect its wearer.

Take a simple example: many people have had the experience of suffocation in their sleep with their body pressed on by some forces and unable to wake up. When they struggled and eventually woke up, they continued to have a terrible heartache for two days. This is form of possession by evil spirit and there are many reasons for this phenomenon.

Benefits of Dzi Beads

1. For the mind
Dzi bead has a positive magnetic field energy, which helps you to face life with optimism. One may choose to wear a suitable Dzi bead during difficult time such as economic downturn or high unemployment. It also helps those who suffer from depression, lack of confidence, or lack of zest in life to find optimism. When in contact with our body, it emits exceptional power, which can clear negative thoughts and forces, thereby helping the wearer to have a positive attitude towards life.

2. For the body
Dzi beads can protect against danger and bring peace. Through years of immersion in heaven and earth’s energy, it serves as a protector against negative forces. It also helps practitioners to gain inspiration as well as improve their cultivation to attain an elevated level of compassion and wisdom.

Dzi bead provides overall benefit to the human body.
In the biography of King Gesar, it was documented that he made a vow while he buried the Dzi beads: “May the Dzi beads gather in the hands of Buddha and Master. May the heavenly dharma guardians safeguard the Dzi beads till the arrival of the virtuous disciple”. Thus the Tibetans believe that to have a Dzi bead is a reflection of one’s accumulated blessing and merits of many lifetimes. Thus to own a Dzi bead in the lifetime is in some sense, a sign of progression in your dharma cultivation.

One may invite a Dzi bead from a Bodhi Meditation center. We wish all who have the opportunity to read this article to own one of these propitious treasures. May you receive Buddha’s blessing. May your life be liberated and beautiful.

.
.

Save me!
A netizen (N) reached out to me last night, exclaiming, “Master (M), you saved my life!
Puzzled, I responded, “… but I don’t remember calling for an ambulance?”
N: “No, Master, I was not sick, injured or in need of emergency medical attention”.
M: “I don’t recall if there were robbery or suicide cases…”
N: “No, a few days ago, I did not jump off from a building but had wanted to jump into the sea…”

The conversation progressed into her recent experiences and how it had changed her life significantly.
She was a participant in one of my meditation classes and was at the lowest point of her life. She didn’t make it to the university, and was unsuccessful with her job search. Jobless, she became depressed. Her parents did not get along and her mother left her philandering father. There was no warmth in the family and she stayed at home most of the time, often crying till midnight and even lost her will to live.
Her aunt persuaded her to go abroad to attend classes and relax, and she readily agreed. In reality, her purpose was not to relax. She had never tried meditative practice and was not keen. She just wanted to find a beach where no one knew her and then end her life, never to return.

She narrated:
During the class, Master was humorous and the meaningful narrations on the daily hustle and bustle of life left strong impressions on her. There was the story of a sister who was steadfast about learning (Zen meditation from Master), even at the expense of her life. At this point, Master gently reminded us that you cannot bear to leave us to die because your aim is to save and revive all, so we must live, and live well! This moved me, and gave me hope.

You’d narrated about the girl who was pursuing studies abroad, without the comfort of friends, far from her family and encountering language barriers. She eventually chose to hang herself just before she boarded the plane for home. This story overwhelmed me and I could not hold back my tears. Isn’t this so similar to my predicament? I had no motivation to live. My life path had crumbled – no friends, no family love, no job; nothing to look forward to…

Yet Master sternly reiterated, “Isn’t this a familiar situation faced by every foreign student and immigrant? Once we overcome the initial hurdles, we are winners! No obstacle is ever too challenging unless we lose confidence in ourselves. Those who lose were defeated in their minds without having really persevered.” Every word that Master uttered struck me like deafening thunder, almost making me jump in a reflex action.

“Going into depression just because one is jobless marks a weak and ignorant character. One should look on the positive side and be assured that a better new job awaits us. One must never give up but persevere until success. ‘Failure’ and ‘Death’ should not exist in our thoughts – only ‘Live’, and ‘Live well!’, Master enlightened us.
I held back my tears at that moment, and upon hearing the six-syllable heart mantra, it literally overwhelmed my mind. At that instance, I felt an uplifting dose of energy infused into my mind and body. From that moment onwards, I no longer feel lonely. I have bountiful energy and confidence!

Subsequently, I did visit the beach at Busan. It was heavenly. Calling out to the waters, I reaffirmed, “I will not be weak; I am born into strength – a winner!” Master, you might not have noticed, but you saved my life! I’ve since completed my college education, am cheerful, have a good job and am continuing with my meditation practice.

What are your thoughts after hearing her story?
Buddhadharma is revivifying, especially to every sincere practitioner and to those who want to be successful.

#ChantForOurAncestors

[ A sincere chant surpasses receiving thousand taels of gold ]

The fate of man is related to one’s good and evil conduct. A good or evil action and its outcome is called “energy” or “cause and effect,” which can be passed down through generations.

Every child’s fate and health is predestined at the moment of birth. We inherit the good and bad genes of our parents, grandparents and ancestors as well as their diseases, merits, sins, looks, and personalities.

Therefore, our lives are inextricably linked to our ancestors. Qing Ming Festival is approaching in a few more days; a day to commemorate our ancestors. If we chant sincerely to Buddha to seek his blessing to illuminate and protect our ancestors, we, as descendants, will also be blessed.

Join me this Saturday to [Chant for Our Parents and Ancestors]. Be like the All-Compassionate and Magnanimous Buddha of immense compassion and virtues, we transfer our accumulated merits to our descendants.

May all of you enjoy good health, longevity, auspiciousness, and prosperity.
