The broader the mind, the wider the path
.
Many people share the same feeling, “It is not easy to be a kind person. At times, helping others can lead to misunderstanding!”
So how do we do good deeds and help others?
Let me share a story!!
.
Once upon a time, there was a Taoist temple in a village beside a huge lake in Shangdong. And an elderly Taoist priest lived in the temple.
.
On one particular summer, as the weather was very hot, the Taoist priest strolled to the pavilion beside the lake to enjoy the evening breeze. Suddenly, a toad spirit appeared from the lake and started singing strangely, “Yum, yum, tomorrow I will get to enjoy a sumptuous meal of a four ears!” The elderly priest knew then that the toad spirit was looking forward to his next meal – a human being. He then decided to save the person with four ears.
.
The next day, the elderly priest went early to guard by the side of the huge lake. By noon, the priest was totally drenched in his own perspiration and the floor was scorching hot from the strong sunlight. However, the elderly priest refused to leave and continued guarding.
.
At this moment, he saw a man walking towards the lake from afar. With him, on his head, was a frying wok with two handles. He was using the frying wok as a hat to provide some shelter from the sun.
Suddenly, it dawned on him that the people in Shangdong always describe the two handles of their frying pan as “ears”. He immediately tried to stop the man from advancing towards the lake. However, the man didn’t understand his intention. He pushed the elderly priest to the ground and even kicked him before he eventually left the lake. Though the priest was kicked, he felt very happy as he had saved the life of the man with four ears.
.
At this point, I would like to pause and ask, “If you were the elderly priest and the person you were trying to save kicked and hit you, would your heart be broad enough to want to continue saving this person?”
.
Moral of the story: Only someone who is compassionate and selfless would save others without harboring any hope of return. He will persist even if the person he is trying to save misunderstands him. It takes a broadminded person to do what the priest did.
.
On this coming Saturday, let us discuss “Progress towards Enlightenment” and how we can apply our wisdom and capability to help all people and at the same time elevate our spiritual growth.

.

Notice of Online Global Group Practice (Saturday, May 06, 2017)

During the Song Dynasty, there was a wealthy businessman who was well-versed in the dharma and was a respected philanthropist in his village.

One day, a bodhisattva appeared in his dream and instructed him to buy a batch of medicinal herbs. He rowed his boat to the designated place as told and saw a man wanting to attempt suicide. Next to him were a few of his workers and they told the businessman, “We are trying to stop our boss from committing suicide. We can’t find a buyer for this batch of medicinal herbs because the rain has dampened the stock.” Upon hearing this, the wealthy man kindly offered to buy all the herbs at a premium.

On the same night, the bodhisattva appeared in the wealthy man’s dream and said, “Keep the herbs that you have bought. Do not sell.” Although the wealthy man felt sorry for the money he had spent, he followed the bodhisattva’s instruction.

A few months later, there was a serious epidemic outbreak in the village and half of the villagers died from the disease in less than a month.

One particular night, the bodhisattva re-appeared in the wealthy man’s dream and told him, “Buy some pears and brew them together with your herbs for everyone to drink. One bowl is effective to cure a person. But remember, only a dime of margin for each bowl. You must not overcharge.”

The next day, the wealthy man did as told. Since there were many sick people, he simply boiled his medicinal soup next to the well to cater to the large crowd. Therefore, he saved the entire village. The merits he accumulated from this event were passed on to his descendants and they are able to enjoy comfortable life for many generations.

In fact, this wealthy man’s previous life was an ordained monk. In that life, he made a vow to practice the Dharma diligently so that one day he will be able to repay the kindness of the villagers.

Therefore, compassion can turn a mortal into a sage. This power of compassion can bring about incredible transformation to a person’s life and his descendants.

I welcome everyone to join me coming Saturday for a discussion on how we can lead a more fulfilling, prosperous and happy life! May everyone be blessed with abundance and wisdom!

Notice on Online Global Group Practice (Saturday, April 29, 2017)

A fellow Bodhi practitioner was dismissed from his company came to seek my help: “Master, what should I do?” I told him, “Guanyin Bodhisattva’s birthday is approaching. From tomorrow on, offer flowers to Guanyin Bodhisattva daily and join our morning practice to chant.” As he had yet to find a new job, he did as I said.
I also advised him to write an apology letter to the manager he offended at that time to express his sincerity.

One month later, the manager who fired him approached him. “You can come back to work. Your salary and benefits will remain the same,” the manager told him. Suddenly, he landed himself a job! It was like a miracle! “My boss resented me greatly. Why is he willing to hire me back?

It is his sincere apology to the manager and his sincere prayer to the Buddha and bodhisattvas that fused away the hatred between them. Like the fragrance of the flowers he offered daily, it slowly faded away.

Hence a good way to change our destiny is to chant for our loved ones. Through our sincerity, may our benefactors receive blessings of auspiciousness, peace and prosperity.

This Saturday, let us chant together for our loved ones. May we be blessed with the Buddha’s light of compassion and Manjushri Bodhisattva’s light of wisdom. Wishing you great wisdom, insight, fortune and auspiciousness!

Harness the energy, you will be omnipotent

In the novel “Romance of Three Kingdoms”, the best General is not Zhang Fei but Zhu Ge Liang.

Why is that so? We are all well aware that Zhu is not armed with a formidable weapon. Instead, he holds only a large feathered fan. How is he able to achieve such greatness?

Zhu is a master of the world’s knowledge, ranging from astrology to geography. He understands that all the world’s subjects are filled with energy. If you can harness this energy, you can manipulate even the sky and the earth to be your warriors.

If we possess vast knowledge and we can apply it appropriately, that is what I call wisdom, an immense source of energy.

With this energy, you can feed and fulfill yourself and your family. Expand this energy further and you will be able to help the people around you, and even the whole world.

This limitless energy will be a reflection of your limitless wisdom.

Notice on Online Global Group Practice (Saturday, April 22, 2017)
The Virtuous, the Wise and the Capable
A few years ago, a disciple who was a restaurant owner, confided in me, “Master, it is so difficult to recruit chefs!” He was willing to pay a high salary, yet he had difficulties recruiting chefs. Knowing his meticulous personality, I asked him, “Are you being too picky?”

He shared with me his story…

One day, a chef who specialized in Sichuan cuisine, came for the job interview. My disciple asked the chef to prepare a simple dish of steamed Chinese cabbage with bean curd. The Sichuan chef, upon hearing my disciple’s request, immediately replied,“No, I do not know how to cook that. I only prepare Sichuan dishes.”

On another occasion, a chef who specialized in Beijing cuisine came and applied for the same position. My disciple asked the chef to prepare some handmade noodles. The chef answered,“Noodles are the specialty of pastry chefs and I only know how to prepare Beijing cuisine.” (Editor’s note: Pastry chef is a culinary terminology used in Mainland China to describe chef that specializes in handmade noodles, baked pancakes and dim-sum)

My disciple told him, “Not to worry, I am willing to pay you and it is easy to learn.” The chef responded, “I don’t know.” My disciple offered to teach him but the chef simply refused and insisted that he did not know how to do it.

An insightful person will understand the reasons behind.
Are you a virtuous, wise or capable person? If you want to be successful, who must you be?

We will explore the different attributes of the Virtuous, the Wise and the Capable during this Saturday’s group practice and how we can make use of these unique traits to create a meaningful and fulfilling life. I invite you to join me in this discussion and may you be blessed with wisdom, fortune and happiness!
