.

A thought of benevolence brings bountiful blessings

Just how powerful is a person’s thought?
Let me share with you a story about a poor woman who made a light offering!

When Buddha was giving Dharma talks at Savatthi, there was a poor woman named Nanda who eked out a living by begging.

Nanda often thought, “Due to the seeds of grave wrongdoings in the past, I am denigrated to a life of poverty and lowliness in this lifetime as they bore fruit. While I have the karmic connection to meet with the Buddha, I could not afford to offer anything to venerate the Buddha”. Nanda was inconsolably sad, as remorse weighed heavily on her destitute predicament.

On a fateful day, Nanda managed to receive a little penny after much difficulty. Elated, she immediately took the penny to the oil shop. She wanted to buy an oil lamp to venerate the Buddha, and seek the Buddha’s guidance out of her current predicament.

When Nanda took the penny to the oil shop, she realized that a penny simply could not afford an oil lamp! Following, she implored incessantly with the shopowner. Only after tremendous efforts did he agree to let her have double the amount of oil so that she can offer a full oil lamp to venerate the Buddha.

With the oil lamp in both hands, Nanda respectfully visited the Buddha’s sanctuary to offer the oil lamp before the Buddha.

She also made a great vow, “I am poor today because I did not know how to cultivate my merit field in my past life. I have nothing to offer before the Buddha except for this oil lamp. But I earnestly pray with this lamp before the Buddha, that with his perfect virtues, he can guide me out of this tragic fate of poverty, illness, pain and suffering, and in future, (may I) be able to guide all sentient beings away from ignorance and darkness, towards realization.

The next day, when Venerable Ananda entered the prayer hall for regular maintenance, he found that all the oil lamps had burned out; only the poor woman’s lamp continued to burn; in fact, her oil lamp and its wick had not the slightest sign of burning out, as if it had been newly-lit. He wanted to extinguish the fire, but found that no matter how hard he tried, he just could not do it.

Upon this sight, the Buddha explained, “This oil lamp is not one that you can extinguish, even if you use vast spiritual powers, or the waters from the four great seas, because it is offered by a devotee with immense Bodhichitta”.

Just as the Buddha had finished his sentence, Nanda entered the hall to venerate the Buddha once again. The Buddha said to her, “You will in two great asamkhyeyas eons attain Buddhahood and will be known as the Light Buddha”

After reading the story of the poor woman, don’t we feel more enlightened and inspired?
I hope that everyone’s wishes be fulfilled, and may all be filled with all-round happiness!
