Be respectful to everything
—— Explore the truth in Zen meditative state (Part III): The Four Immeasurables
( November 27th, 2014 Day Three, Vancouver)

I always adopt a respectful, if not revered attitude towards everything – be it things or matters – in life. My clothes tend to be cheap, and despite frequent use, hardly gets worn out. This also applies to my shoes. Except for when the quality was lacking to begin with. Such as the shirt that I wore yesterday. After only two hours, two buttons had fallen off. If it is Heaven’s will, how many buttons would I have to sew to replace the lost ones? Nonetheless, knowing the poor quality, I should have taken it upon myself to reinforce the shirt buttons in advance before it is too late.

In other words, we should be respectful and express gratitude toward objects that we use, see and enjoy. Do not belittle things with judgements such as “So what, this is (worth) nothing”; even to pebbles that are in our path, kicking them indiscriminately. Actually, kicking the pebbles only brings harm to our bodies. One cannot be foolish to that extent, right? Just as in the venting of unhappiness by kicking the table legs. Long before the table legs give way, the vandal would have suffered a broken toe, isn’t it? Some may say, “When I’m angry, I like to smash things.” For such people, I’d place precious and valuable items before them. My guess is that after one round of smashing the valuables, such people would rid the bad habit once and for all. Such people do not kick the bad habit because they pick on the cheap items to smash. Their house is perpetually stocked with discount items. Smashing such cheap items do not cost much, perhaps only ten dollars in total. Thus, there is no need for restraint. The crucial point however, is the real pain does not lie in the loss from the damaged items, but in the broken hearts of the loved ones witnessing the outbursts.

We must learn to look inward, identify and overcome our negative afflictions, including greed and foolish behaviors so as to develop greater wisdom and live an enlightened life.
