Fox and nectar

A few days ago, a fellow practitioner mentioned to me: “I was really focused while chanting in class. At one point, I was so focused that I entered the zen state, and my saliva tasted sweet and cool. It was a wonderful feeling.” He wondered what this was about.

In reply, I told this story:

There was once a meditation master called Hun Yuan. He lived deep in the mountains, far away from civilization. When he was younger, he received pointers on meditation from an accomplished meditation master.

In the beginning, he could remain in the seated meditation pose for a few hours. Eventually he could meditate non-stop for ten, even twenty days. A person who regularly offered food to the meditation master often found the food that he had brought a fortnight ago remained untouched. The food had dried out and turned bad, but the master had not opened his eyes.

One day, the person arrived as usual to deliver food to the master. This time, the master was not sitting in his usual upright meditation posture. Instead, his head was bowed, his mouth was open, and saliva was dripping out. A fox was lying on the ground with his mouth open to receive the dripping saliva. The person quickly grabbed a stick and chased the fox away. Eventually the master regained awareness and realized that a month has passed.

Immediately the person told him what happened with the fox, and advised him to be careful. He even offered to get a few villagers to stand guard over the master while he was meditating. The master politely declined. He did not say anything, but he knew very well what was going on.

That night, the fox appeared in the dreams of the person who had chased him away. The fox ran into his home and transformed into a handsome lad. The lad spoke: “Please don’t get people to hurt me. I was not going to harm Master Hun Yuan. I was just leveraging on his cultivation to improve my own. His saliva was going to be wasted anyway, so I swallowed his saliva to help me reach the next stage of my cultivation.”

The person asked the fox in his dream: “What benefit do you get from swallowing his saliva?”

The fox replied: “My cultivation is already at the level that allows me to take the human form. When I swallow the nectar that drips out of an accomplished practitioner, not only will my cultivation not deteriorate, it will improve by leaps and bounds. I will then be able to progress beyond physical form and transform into anything by using the power of thought.”

Such stories were common in the olden days. The nectar was a result of Master Hun Yuan’s sincerity, which had moved Guanyin Bodhisattva into bestowing upon him the nectar. This is also commonly referred to as the “pill of revival after death” or the “pill of longevity” in Chinese legends.

Hence, when we cultivate with sincerity, we will also be blessed with nectar in our mouths, and this has the ability to cure diseases in our bodies and bless us with good health and longevity.
