The mystery behind good and ill fortune

Why are some people’s luck exceptionally bad? They often encounter swindlers to cheat them of their money? Or they lose all their hard earned money in failed business ventures?
Conversely, others are born with a golden spoon in their mouth, and lead a prosperous life effortlessly!

As the saying goes: 「you reap what you sow」, if you want a good life, you must plant kind seeds, for example, doing more kind deeds to accumulate positive karmic merits. Habitually help the poor through monetary donations or physical effort. You will experience miracles in your life!

人為什麼會有貧窮、富貴的差別?

從前有個國家的公主心血來潮，穿了便裝帶了侍女出遊，當公主走到了市集中，看到有很多乞丐在兩旁乞討，非常的憐憫，回宮後就請父皇下令，分出部份國庫給窮人，讓大家都擁有同等財富。但是沒過多久，貧窮的人還是一樣貧窮，富貴的仍然富貴。公主很納悶，為什麼會這樣呢。

因為富貴的人，有富貴的基因，貧窮的人有貧窮的基因。
所謂的「基因」又是如何造成的，該如何解決呢？

Why are there differences in people – some live in poverty; others in great wealth?

Once upon a time, the princess of a country had a whim. She decided to wear casual clothes and explore outside the palace with her maids. When the princess reached the crowded city centre, she saw many beggars on both sides of the street. Feeling sorry for them, she returned to the palace and requested the king to order part of the country’s wealth to be distributed to the poor so that everyone has the same wealth. But not long after, the poor remained as poor as before, and the rich were still rich. The princess wondered why it was so.

This is because the rich carry “rich” genes, and the poor carry “poor” genes.
How does the so-called “gene” evolve, and how do we resolve it?

俗云：積「善」之家，必有餘慶，行「善」之人必有厚福。

「行善」是最幸福的人，也是創造人生好命運的基本功課，我們若想未來的命運富貴、吉祥，那就從現在就開始學著做吧。
.
因為「富貴、吉祥」是無所求的善所招感~
但要記得「勿以善小而不為，勿以惡小而為之。」
我們布施時心態不同，結果也會不同。

Those who do good enjoy everlasting wealth
.
As the Chinese saying goes: “ The family that accumulates good merits by performing kind deeds will be rewarded with abundant happiness and fortune.”
.
Charitable people are blessed throughout their lives and these acts of kindness are also the basis for a life filled with good fortune. If we want to be prosperous and auspicious in future, then we need to start learning how to be charitable now.
.
Prosperity and auspiciousness are attracted by unconditional acts of kindness.
However, do remember that there is no good deed that is too small nor is there an evil deed that is insignificant.
Depending on our mindset when performing these charitable acts, the impact on our lives can be very different.

有這麼一句話：「一個人的快樂，並不是他擁有的多少，而是他計較的少。」
.
我們要明白，多是一種「負擔」，少是另一種「有餘」。
「捨」也不一定是失，而是另一種更寬闊的「擁有」。
.
所以，捨得是生命的一種領悟與成熟，
捨得，更是一種智慧，一種人生的境界。
.
生命中那些不可思議的智慧、能力、財富、榮耀等等，
都是由佈施與捨得去收穫的。
.
Generosity invites wealth!
.
There is the saying, “A person’s happiness is not about how much he possesses, but how magnanimous he is”.
.
We must understand, having more can constitute a “burden”, and having less can make us appreciate our “extras”.
“Giving” is not necessarily a loss, but a broader form of “possessions”
.
So, willingness to give is a manifestation of an understanding and maturity of life,
Willingness to give, is also a mark of wisdom, and heralds an elevated state of life.
.
The inconceivable wisdom, capability, wealth, glory and so on, are the rewards from generosity and willingness to give.

Generosity invites wealth!

一般人都「捨不得」，無論你多麼相信佛陀。佛說「捨去吧，四大皆空」，你能捨嗎？一般放不下。拿你的錢財去供養修行人、或者布施給更加貧苦的人，你捨得嗎？你有一千萬你能拿出兩萬到十萬塊錢，你都覺得自己是一個了不起的大菩薩了。
.
儘管我們理解這些道理，但應用的時候還會捨不得。也正因為一個捨不得，所以也就得不到生命中那些我們所說的不可思議的智慧、能力、財富、榮耀等等。所以我們還需要從捨得入手。

Generosity invites wealth!
Generally, people are less incline toward giving, regardless of their faith in the Buddha. As the Buddha said, “Learn to let go, as all the four elements (earth, water, fire, air) are empty and illusory. Can you do it? The majority will struggle. Even when the material possessions are for the benefits of faith practitioners or for the needy, are you willing to give? If you have 10 million dollars, and give away twenty to a hundred thousand dollars, you would consider yourself a great Bodhisattva.

Although we understand these teachings, when it comes to practice, there is the reluctance to give. It is this reluctance that is obscuring us from the miraculous blessings of life – wisdom, ability, wealth, glory and so on. Thus, we would need to start from the willingness to give.

點燃佛前一盞燈，照亮一年好前程！

元宵節供燈、賞燈是從何時開始的呢？
.
東漢時期，漢明帝篤信佛教，派蔡愔去印度求法，得知印度在中國的元月十五日會有僧眾率領信眾觀佛舍利並點燈敬佛的活動，這天也是佛教徒敬佛的良辰吉時。於是，漢明帝下令在皇宮與寺廟中點燈敬佛，民間上行下效，家家戶戶也會掛燈，這也留下了中國元宵「燃燈表佛」的最早記載，成為今日華人元宵賞燈、供燈的開端。
.
「火光」在佛教中有兩種意義，一是破除黑暗，二是展現佛法的光明。因此延續到今天，我們若能在元宵節這天點燈、供燈就會帶來極大的功德利益。
.
在佛陀教法中，有一個快速解脫之法——「佛前供燈」。點燃佛前一盞燈，照亮一年好前程！供燈也是菩提「三寶」之一。

Offer a light in front of the Buddha to brighten up your year ahead!
When did the custom of light offering on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month start?
.
Apparently, Emperor Han of the Eastern Han Dynasty who was a Buddhist had sent Caiyin to India to pursue the Dharma. When he was there he found out that the monks would lead Buddhists in light offering on the same day which is also an auspicious day for Buddhists. Therefore, the Emperor passed a decree that palaces and temples should offer light and be mindful on the full moon day of the first lunar month. Very soon, all households were hanging lit lanterns. This is the earliest record of the Chinese heritage of light offering to the Buddha. It is also the beginning of the Chinese offering and appreciating of lights.
.
Actually, light emitted from fire has two significances. Firstly, it gets rid of darkness. Secondly, it is a display of the light of Dharma (wisdom). Indeed, the practice of light offering on full moon day in the first lunar month has continued to this very day. By doing so, it brings us great merits and benefits.
.
In Buddhist teachings, light offering to the Buddha is a quick way to liberation. Let’s all offer light to brighten up our year ahead! In fact, light offering is also one of the “triple gems” in Bodhi Meditation.
