During the Sung Dynasty, there was a very talented scholar named Su Dongpo who was regarded as a prodigy in the literary world. He was good friends with Meditation Master Fo Yin and they loved to engaged in active debates and discussions in Buddhism and literature studies. Master Fo Yin gained the upper hand every time and this always made Su Dongpo glum. He was constantly brainstorming ways in which he could emerge victorious from their next debate.
.
One day, while the two of them were meditating together, Su Dongpo had a sudden inspiration and asked Master Fo Yin: “What does my meditation posture remind you of?” To which Master Fo Yin replied: “Like Buddha.” Su Dongpo was elated upon hearing this.
.
Master Fo Yin asked Su Dongpo: “What does my sitting posture remind you of?” Without hesitation, Su Dongpo replied: “A pile of cow dung!” Master Fo Yin simply smiled, put his hands together and murmured “Amitabha.”
.
When Su Dongpo reached home, he was excited to show off to his younger sister. Proudly, he exclaimed to her: “I finally beat Master Fo Yin today.” His sister asked curiously: “How did you do it?”
.
After hearing the full story, his sister disagreed with him. “Big brother, in fact, you have lost today! Master Fo Yin sees everyone as Buddha because he only thinks of Buddha. As for you, you have a filthy mind, which is why you see Master Fo Yin – who is at peace and pure in thoughts – as cow dung. Don’t you see that you have lost heavily?”
.
Let us try to attain emptiness by leveraging on all things that have form. As long as we hold Buddha in our hearts, we will see all sentient beings as Buddha and attain purity in our six roots of sensations. Taking a step backward can actually be progression in the right direction!
