Mother’s Day,what is the best gift for our mother?

There was a practitioner who asked me in FB for gift ideas for mothers on Mother’s Day.

Some years back, there was a practitioner in Canada who chanted 2 hours every evening at Canada Bodhi Meditation centre. He appeared to be in good health and would often come in office suits before changing to casual wear for his daily chanting.

I saw him at the centre once and asked: “what is your reason for chanting?”

He replied: “I came from a single parent family. My mother exhausted all means to send me abroad for studies and work but she remained in Mainland China herself. Though my mother is being taken care of by my younger brother’s family, her health is not good. I am very worried and wished to accompany and take care of her at home but she is adamant and refused to let me go back. She reassured me that my younger brother is by her side and his wife can take care of her. She wanted me to concentrate on my career so that I can have great career accomplishment. I wanted to fetch her over to Canada, find the best doctor for her but she always gave the excuse that her health is not very good and do not wish to travel.”

The practitioner was troubled over this for a long time. On one occasion, he came across my teaching on the internet “Chanting for our loved ones” and knew that we can chant for our loved ones to gain Buddha’s blessings. Desperate and out of ideas, he decided to give it a try.
He went to the nearest Bodhi meditation centre after work and started chanting for his mother on a daily basis. He would tell Buddha: My mother brought me up painstakingly but I am not by her side and cannot take care of her now. I sincerely pray and hope that Buddha can bless her with good health.

His mother had always been weak, her voice can even be heard quivering over the telephone whenever they chatted. However, after just one month of chanting for his mother, the practitioner discovered that his mother’s voice had grown louder and clearer. Eventually, his mother told him she is able to run errands on her own outside without any help. Upon hearing this, the practitioner was very happy and became more focused in his daily chanting: he prayed for Buddha’s help in taking care of his mother.

I was very happy after hearing his story and encouraged him: “The power of chanting is incredible. Do persist!”

When I saw him one year later, he was with an old lady. Though the old lady has some white hair, she appeared energetic and physically strong. He introduced: “Master, this is my mother. Her health is in excellent state and she is staying with me in Canada now. Currently, she is a regular at Bodhi Meditation centre, doing chanting and practicing Energy Bagua!” The old lady upon hearing her son’s words, realized that I am his master, held my hand and said with a strong dialect slang: “Master, your techniques are excellent, I started to grow new hair and some white hairs even turned black! Look! She pointed at some hair and even squat and stood up a few times to show me her mobility. Clearly, she is very healthy and physically mobile now.

I asked the practitioner’s mother: “How old are you?”

She smilingly replied:”I am turning 70! But my limbs are as mobile as when I was 50 years old!”

I looked at the happy smiles on both their faces and lamented on the miraculous giving of Buddha and Bodhisattvas. In the process of giving, Buddha and Bodhisattvas did not lose a single thing. All they required from us is our sincerity!

So, what do you think is the best gift for our mothers?

When you are unable to take care of your mother yourself, pray to Buddha sincerely and seek for their blessings for your mothers!

The key to a happy and lasting relationship lies in a compliment

The first sentence in a romance novel I’ve seen stated that:

「If he treats me a little better, gives me a smile, or even if he is pretending, I will not forsake him.」

I was stunned by this quote, did some research and found that most women agree to this. With just a compliment, she will happily and willingly slog for you.

Notice of Online Global Group Practice (Saturday, May 06, 2017)

During the Song Dynasty, there was a wealthy businessman who was well-versed in the dharma and was a respected philanthropist in his village.

One day, a bodhisattva appeared in his dream and instructed him to buy a batch of medicinal herbs. He rowed his boat to the designated place as told and saw a man wanting to attempt suicide. Next to him were a few of his workers and they told the businessman, “We are trying to stop our boss from committing suicide. We can’t find a buyer for this batch of medicinal herbs because the rain has dampened the stock.” Upon hearing this, the wealthy man kindly offered to buy all the herbs at a premium.

On the same night, the bodhisattva appeared in the wealthy man’s dream and said, “Keep the herbs that you have bought. Do not sell.” Although the wealthy man felt sorry for the money he had spent, he followed the bodhisattva’s instruction.

A few months later, there was a serious epidemic outbreak in the village and half of the villagers died from the disease in less than a month.

One particular night, the bodhisattva re-appeared in the wealthy man’s dream and told him, “Buy some pears and brew them together with your herbs for everyone to drink. One bowl is effective to cure a person. But remember, only a dime of margin for each bowl. You must not overcharge.”

The next day, the wealthy man did as told. Since there were many sick people, he simply boiled his medicinal soup next to the well to cater to the large crowd. Therefore, he saved the entire village. The merits he accumulated from this event were passed on to his descendants and they are able to enjoy comfortable life for many generations.

In fact, this wealthy man’s previous life was an ordained monk. In that life, he made a vow to practice the Dharma diligently so that one day he will be able to repay the kindness of the villagers.

Therefore, compassion can turn a mortal into a sage. This power of compassion can bring about incredible transformation to a person’s life and his descendants.

I welcome everyone to join me coming Saturday for a discussion on how we can lead a more fulfilling, prosperous and happy life! May everyone be blessed with abundance and wisdom!

Being Able to Work is a Blessed Thing

Having the ability to work is a very fortunate thing, but some people do not like to contribute or do more than others. They think that they are working for the benefit of their bosses. The moment the boss is not watching over them, they would begin to slack off and take advantage of the company. Such an attitude is wrong. We are working for our own benefit, to meet our own needs in life. Regardless of what kind of job it is, as long as your boss is paying you to do it, he is paying for the bread and butter in your life and he is the reason why your wife and children are able to lead carefree lives. The work might be hard, but if nobody is willing to employ you, you will have trouble making ends meet.

A young disciple of mine in United States once told me that his boss made him do all sorts of trivial tasks, including running personal errands for him. He asked me whether he should resign. I told him: “Wait for a while more. If I don’t tell you to resign, do not do anything rash.” Fewer than two months later, the company had to retrench one-third of the staff due to poor product sales. However, not only was this disciple of mine retained in the company, he was promoted to the position of a departmental manager and his salary was doubled. He became very happy at work, and even turned up half an hour early to clean the office. He did all this not because he hoped to get a pay raise from it. It was all done on his own initiative, out of a desire to do more, for his own sake. He has found happiness.

Having the ability to be of service to other people is something to be happy about as it means that you are a person with value. If you can maintain a happy attitude at work, not only will you be especially efficient, you will also feel immensely happy and fortunate.

A person who loves to work is someone who appreciates life. Someone who is willing to shoulder more responsibilities, to give and to work more will find happiness and lead a more fulfilling life.

The secret to improving a child’s intelligence and focus

Every parent wants their child to be clever and perform well academically. Often, however, the child is either too playful to pay attention to learning or he studies really hard but is still not able to attain good grades. So how can we raise a child’s intelligence and focus?

Let the child do 12 prostrations conscientiously in front of Manjushri bodhisattva or the Buddha’s image every day. After a while, you will see the improvement in the child and his grades.

Today is Manjushri Bodhisattva’s birthday. Manjushri Bodhisattva is known for his wisdom and eloquence. Therefore, by praying to Manjushri Bodhisattva, you will receive his blessings to help you in your learning, memory, adaptability and other intelligence related capabilities.

During this period of Manjushri Bodhisattva’s birthday, your respectful offerings and generosity or any kind actions are extremely beneficial and meritorious.

Parents could also bring their children to the Meditation Centers to pay respect to the buddhas, asking the buddhas and bodhisattvas to protect and bless the children with wisdom. May all the children do well academically and be well and blissful.

Win the world over with your smile

If we wish to be liberated (from samara), be free from ailments, develop wisdom and have children who are bright and sensible, then we must not harbor hatred.

We must be magnanimous and forgiving. We must be sincere and compassionate. To all whom we have harbored hatred towards in the past; we must forgive them regardless of the hurt and suffering that they may have caused us, and approach our predicament with magnanimity and compassion. For every effect, there is always a cause. If we understand this, then we should not dwell on our predicament or blame others for it. So, be magnanimous.

If you’d like, please join me in reciting:
“I’ll not blame or hate; I’ll not be wrathful; I’ll not be vengeful.
I’ll not envy; I’ll love all sentient beings; all sentient beings are my parents and relatives.
I’m the most compassionate; I’m the most gentle; I’ll win the world over with my compassion.
Like the vast ocean, I can bear all adversities as I’m a follower of the Buddha.
Like the Buddha, I’m compassionate; I resemble the Buddha.
I’m the most compassionate; I’m the most magnanimous; I’m the wisest and most brilliant; I’m the most gracious; I’m the most devoted.
I will appreciate my enemies. May they be well and free of suffering; may they repent and turn over a new leaf.

I wish for world peace; for everyone to enjoy auspiciousness, bliss, health and happiness.
I’m the most confident; I’m the most magnanimous; I’m the wisest; I’m the most compassionate.
With my smile, I’ll win the world over …”
