盂蘭盆節

每年的農曆七月十五日為「盂蘭盆節」,也稱「盂蘭盆會」、「中元節」。

關於它的由來,有一個典故:
在佛陀時代,佛陀座下「神通第一」的弟子目犍連,他用天眼看到他的母親在地獄之中受著懲罰,到處都是刀山、火海、油鍋,非常痛苦、奄奄一息。他就給她飯吃,可當這個飯送到母親嘴裡就變成火炭了;給她喂水,水就變成火。

他非常痛苦,很受刺激,就飛快地去找佛陀:「佛陀,請您趕快救救我母親吧,我母親在地獄受罪啊。」
.
佛陀睜開祂的慧眼,看看之後說:「你真救不了,你母親應得的業報不是靠你的法力就能救的,你現在的德行幾乎不能代替母親應該承受的懲罰。」
.
目犍連:「佛陀,我不能眼看著媽媽在那兒受罪啊。」
.
佛陀:「我有個方法,就是用豐盛的食物誠心供養佛、菩薩、修行者,去感動佛菩薩、感動修行人,以他們大慈悲的加持力和大德行,去幫助抵消你母親的一切罪業。」
.
目犍連按照佛陀教授的方法,終使母親得到解脫。
.
之後,在每年的農曆七月十五這天,佛教徒都會舉行「盂蘭盆法會」,供奉佛陀和僧人,報答歷代父母的慈愛之恩,讓他們得解脫、得吉祥。他們吉祥了,那我們才能吉祥,我們的生命才會變得完美。
.
佛陀通過教化目連尊者,其實給我們眾生指了一條路子,就是通過大慈大悲、有德行的人,協助我們消災、滅難,幫助我們獲得吉祥。這種借用外力當中最好的方法就是──真誠。

Ullambana Festival

The Ullambana Festival, also known as the Ghost Festival, falls on the 15th day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar.

The origin of this festival can be traced back to the time of the Buddha. Maudgalyayana, a disciple of the Buddha, with his spiritual divine power saw his deceased mother tormented with hunger and starvation in hell. Saddened, he tried feeding her to ease her hunger. But before she could eat, the food turned into burnt charcoal and fire.

Maudgalyayana was deeply disturbed and begged the Buddha for help. The Buddha said to him, “Her past sins are too deep and huge for you alone to save. Your existing merits are not sufficient to release her from her sufferings.”

Maudgalyayana replied, “But Buddha, as a son, I can’t bear to see my mother suffer.”

The Buddha responded, “I have a way and that is to make food offerings to buddhas, bodhisattvas and cultivating practitioners. If you can move them with your sincerity, their compassionate blessings and merits will help redeem her of her karmic debts.”

Maudgalyayana took Buddha’s advice and was able to free his mother from sufferings.

From then on, Buddhists would hold Ullambana Festival every year on the 15th day of the seventh month. During the festival, offerings will be made to the Buddha and the Sangha to express gratitude towards our ancestors so that they will be relieved of suffering and be auspicious. Only when our ancestors are auspicious then will we be auspicious and lead a fulfilling life.

The Buddha, through his teaching to Maudgalyayana, actually showed us how we can avoid calamities and become auspicious through the help of compassionate and virtuous practitioners. All it takes is for us to have a sincere heart.

我曾經見過兩位女士在吵架,年齡大概都是五十多歲左右,其中一個女士吵架嘴特別快、特別狠。兩個人吵著利害,另一位女士當場氣到直挺挺地昏倒了!還住院了七八天。有時候對高手來說,光憑一張嘴就能當場把對方給氣死。所以,經過這個案例,我發現很多疾病是因為精神上的痛苦和壓力而導致的。

修習禪修之後,會讓我們的生命能量不斷增加,心理承受力會大大增強;同時,在禪修的過程中,因為心中常保持一份慈悲善念,就不容易產生情緒不穩而罵人,如此,減少了傷害他人、傷害自己的機會,對我們的身心靈健康將會有最直接的幫助。

每個人都活在這個群居的社會上,免不了需要和他人打交道。
改善人際關係、經營好自己的人生,成為咱們此生必修的功課!!

Online Global Group Practice on Saturday: How do we improve our interpersonal relationships? (August 19, 2017)

Anger, agony, troubling thoughts and negative emotions- How do these affect our physical health and mind?

I once came across two women in their mid-fifties quarreling. One of them was very fast and harsh in her response and words. In the midst of their heated arguments, one of them suddenly fainted and was hospitalized for 7 days!

There are cases where a person can literally die from anger because of another person’s words. Hence, through this case, I realized a lot of physical illnesses come about because of mental stress and unhappiness.

Through meditation practice, our life energy and tolerance level will increase. Since meditators tend to harbor kind and compassionate thoughts, they will not lose control of their emotions easily and start to scold others. This reduces the probability of inflicting hurt onto themselves or others, which in turn helps to maintain a healthy body and mind.

We are all part of one big social network. Everyone has to interact and deal with people in their daily lives.

Improving interpersonal relationships and better life management are vital skills which we all need to acquire!!

「佛歡喜日」,也是一年一度的盂蘭盆會、中元節。
起源於佛教修行人、高僧大德結夏安居九十日(4月15日-7月15日)閉關修行90天後的出關之日。經過三個月的精進修持,到農曆7月15日這一天,許多人修到智慧圓滿、證悟成佛,令諸佛菩薩非常歡喜,因此這一天也被稱為「佛歡喜日」,是一個非常殊勝的日子。
.
「佛歡喜日」這一天,也時值盂蘭盆會,讓我們有孝敬祖宗、感恩祖宗的機會。通過真誠之心在佛前供燈、供養修行人,以真誠之心去祈請佛菩薩、修行大德們,使在地獄中受苦的祖宗、親人們不再受各種刑罰,不再痛苦、恐懼……;也使活在世間的父母、祖輩健康長壽、安詳自在。借助這個功德,還能讓我們曾經傷害過的一切冤親債主能夠得以解脫,消除我們的罪業。我們的祖宗、親人吉祥自在了,我們才能夠吉祥自在。

歡迎大家借助這樣一個好機會為祖先、為自己做功德,讓佛歡喜自在,讓我們的祖先吉祥自在,也讓我們自己遠離痛苦黑暗、獲得吉祥圓滿的人生。

Buddha’s Joyful Day

The Buddha’s Joyful Day coincides with the annual Ullambana festival or Ghost festival and marks the completion of a 90 days summer retreat (15 April to 15 July) by Buddhist dharma practitioners and eminent monks. After 3 months of intensive meditation, many dharma practitioners gained ultimate wisdom and attained enlightenment on the 15th day of the seventh month of the lunar calendar. Because the number of practitioners who attained enlightenment during that period was high, the buddhas and bodhisattvas were very pleased, thus the day is an extraordinary day.

The Buddha’s Joyful Day is also the Ullambana festival. This is the time for us to show our respect and gratitude to our ancestors. Through sincere offering of lights before Buddha, making offerings to dharma practitioners and making sincere prayers to buddhas and bodhisattvas, we seek blessings to relieve our ancestors who are suffering in the lower realms. May they be freed from their punishments, fear and suffering. At the same time, we hope the living parents and grandparents can continue to enjoy health, longevity and peace.

By virtue of these merits, we hope to liberate our karmic creditors and get rid of our sins. We can only enjoy peace and happiness when our ancestors and loved ones are auspicious and at ease.

Welcome all to use this opportunity to accumulate our own merits. Let buddhas be joyful; let us be freed from pain and darkness; let us enjoy a happy and fulfilling life.

天神的寶物──天珠

在菩提禪堂,有同修請法物時就問:「佩戴天珠,對我們有什麼好處?」
.
這個問題挺好的,我個人比較喜歡這些天然的寶物。
天珠,在中國西藏、尼泊爾等地區,備受人們的喜愛,相傳它是降臨到人間的「天神的寶物」,被當地人尊稱為「天降之石」。
.
匯聚天地之靈性,不同的圖案有著不同的能量,尤其天珠上的「天眼」,代表著天地之間最大的驅魔之眼。因此,佩戴天珠能將體內及外界汙穢之氣吸收、淨化,使人不受邪氣所侵。
.
尤其在經過大修行者的慈悲加持後,天珠更是蘊含了極強的能量,能夠消災避邪、趨吉避凶。長期佩戴,可增進身心的調和,啟發自在的定慧,給我們帶來吉祥與平安的護佑,成就祥和圓滿的人生。

Treasure of the Deities – Dzi bead

When one of the Bodhi Meditation’s students was looking at getting some blessed articles in our Bodhi meditation center, he asked, “What are the benefits of wearing Dzi bead?”

The question he posed was a good one. Personally, I like such natural stones. Dzi bead is well-liked by many in Tibet and Nepal. It is believed that Dzi bead is treasure from the deities and the locals in Tibet and Nepal call it the “Heavenly stone”.

Dzi bead is a combination of heaven and earth’s essence and the different patterns represent different energy. The “eyes” on the stone symbolizes the most powerful “eye” in heaven and earth to ward off evil. Therefore, wearing the Dzi bead cleanses the body and the surroundings of bad energy and prevents one from being tainted by bad energy.

Dzi bead that has been blessed by great cultivators contains enormous energy which can prevent disasters and turn misfortunes into blessings. Wearing Dzi bead for a long period of time helps moderate one’s wellbeing, increases one’s focus and brings good fortune and serenity to one’s life and at the same time, help achieve a peaceful and successful life.

在世界各地,菩提禪修帶給大家的是健康快樂。
「菩提禪修,健康快樂」,這就是我們的宗旨。

人活著如果不健康,就很難快樂;不快樂,也許一多半的人生就缺少了幸福感。你拚命工作,為了就是擁有一個幸福的生活,可是一旦身體不健康,你的幸福多一半就沒有了,尤其是得了很痛苦的疾病。有些疾病從得病到死都不痛苦;有些疾病雖不致命,卻讓人很痛苦,比如說腰痛、脖子痛、頸椎痛、肩膀痛、五十肩等等,一幹活就痛,甚至連梳頭、洗手也痛,你還能覺得生活很幸福嗎?確實幸福不了,雖然不死人,但身心都很煎熬,醫療上又沒有什麼辦法,這類的疾病太多了。
.
人生最多三萬天,論天數算,其實很少的。
同樣的三萬天,你活得幸福嗎?健康嗎?快樂嗎?富有嗎?有愛你的人嗎?你有愛的人嗎?如果這些東西都缺少一點的話,我想這個幸福感就少了很多很多。
.
以上我所說到的這些,通過修行,可能每個部分的幸福感都會增加一些。

In all parts of the world, Bodhi Meditation bring health and happiness to everyone.
“Bodhi Meditation – health and happiness” is our mission.

If a person is not heathy, it is difficult to be happy; and perhaps a big part of that person’s life will not be living in happiness. We strive at work to enjoy a happy life, but once poor health strikes, we lose more than half of our happiness immediately, especially when stricken with debilitating illnesses. Some diseases do not bring pain till death; others may not be critical, but bring pain and suffering, such as backache, neck pain, cervical pain, shoulder ache, and even “frozen shoulder”. These ailments afflict our daily life. When simple task such as combing your hair, and washing hands become painful, can life be happy? We can’t be truly happy with these ailments, so while not life-threatening, the body and mind suffer. There are many such diseases, but with little remedies.

Through cultivation and practice, the elements above may broadly improve, allowing us to experience true happiness.

「願望非一時衝動,而是長久的堅持和付出。」
.
願望,也叫作「理想或人生的目標」。有了一個偉大而高尚的願望的話,我們才會有高尚的行為。
.
正如東方琉璃藥師佛,祂在行菩薩道的時候就發出十二大願,「令諸有情,所求皆得」,幫助所有有情眾生得到一切的美好。
.
我們在修行之後,也要發下一個如佛一般的願望:「我富有,還要讓更多人更富有;我心中光明,還要把這個光明放射出去,讓更多人心中能擁有光明。」在這樣的狀態下,真正去發願的人就容易有所獲得。有多大的願望就會有多大的力量,就會有多大的能量。

有了願望,還要堅持不懈的去執行、去付出。如果有了願望不去執行的話,那這一切都白費了。
.
大願,大行,我們就能改變自己、改變這個世界。

“Aspirations are not born from momentary impulse, but from enduring perseverance and effort.”

Aspiration is also known as “ideal or life goal”. With an ambitious and noble aspiration, we will conduct virtuous deeds.

Just like the Medicine Buddha, who avowed 12 aspirations even as he sought Buddhahood, with the following resolve – “to all compassionate sentient beings; your wishes will be realized” – in a bid to help all achieve every success.

Thus, following our practice, we should establish a similar aspiration like the Buddha, that is, “I’m blessed, but wish for more sentient beings to be blessed; my heart is illuminated, and I allow the illumination in me to radiate universally to illuminate all sentient beings”. In this manner, those who vowed with sincerity could realize the aspirations with ease. Greater aspirations will garner greater strength, and in turn, develop into greater power.

Having established our aspirations, we need a persevering and unwavering attitude to advance them, to execute (our plans). If there is no proactive effort with our aspirations, then all be in vain.

Ambitious aspirations, when matched with robust actions, provide us opportunities for positive changes within ourselves and in the world.
