A herd of cows finding refuge

A herd of cows finding refuge at a temple

The longest rainy season that ever occurred in Korea happened in 2020. It lasted for more than 50 days. Since August 1st, heavy rains have fallen for more than 10 consecutive days across South Korea, causing extreme floods.

From August 7th to the morning of August 8th, heavy rain descended in Gurye County, South Jeolla Province in South Korea, with rainfall as high as 300 mm. On August 8th morning, the embankment of Chan Jinjiang, Gurye County, was destroyed by floods. There was massive flooding at the nearby villages, causing houses to collapse, residents to flee, and poultries in captive to flee in a state of panic. A cattle pen of a villager was also submerged by the flood. Thankfully, a herd of more than ten cows escaped from the cattle pen just in time.

Sasungam, a temple with an altitude of 531m, is located more than 10 kilometers away from the village of Gurye County. This herd of cows has never been to this temple. Yet they found refuge at this sacred place. Isn’t it amazing?

The flood caused 33 deaths, 11 people missing and injured 8 people. While some humans did not escape, the cows were wise enough to seek refuge at the temple. It shows that all animals have a spiritual sense, and they know how to turn to Buddhas and Bodhisattvas for protection in times of danger!!

The main hall of the Sasungam is called the Liu Liguang Hall where a statue of the Medicine Buddha resides! What’s even more amazing is that the abbot in the temple said that after the cows arrived at the temple, they went to the Liu Liguang Hall. They didn’t create any disturbance. Instead, they merely grazed and rested quietly.

There are many temples nearby, yet the cows only approached this temple. Perhaps, they know how special this temple is?

It turns out that Sasungam is a temple where four of the most famous meditation masters in Korea – Wonhyo, Dosun, Jingak, and Uesan meditated extensively. It is a temple that Korean Buddhists particularly respect and worship. It is also particularly effective in fulfilling the blessings of worshippers.

It must be Medicine Buddha’s manifestation that guided the cows to Sasungam, allowing them to successfully escape the flood.

Gratitude to Medicine Buddha!
The cows are so lucky!
This is an example of Buddha’s light showing guidance to all sentient beings. Buddha is everywhere!
