The broader the mind, the wider the path
.
Many people share the same feeling, “It is not easy to be a kind person. At times, helping others can lead to misunderstanding!”
So how do we do good deeds and help others?
Let me share a story!!
.
Once upon a time, there was a Taoist temple in a village beside a huge lake in Shangdong. And an elderly Taoist priest lived in the temple.
.
On one particular summer, as the weather was very hot, the Taoist priest strolled to the pavilion beside the lake to enjoy the evening breeze. Suddenly, a toad spirit appeared from the lake and started singing strangely, “Yum, yum, tomorrow I will get to enjoy a sumptuous meal of a four ears!” The elderly priest knew then that the toad spirit was looking forward to his next meal – a human being. He then decided to save the person with four ears.
.
The next day, the elderly priest went early to guard by the side of the huge lake. By noon, the priest was totally drenched in his own perspiration and the floor was scorching hot from the strong sunlight. However, the elderly priest refused to leave and continued guarding.
.
At this moment, he saw a man walking towards the lake from afar. With him, on his head, was a frying wok with two handles. He was using the frying wok as a hat to provide some shelter from the sun.
Suddenly, it dawned on him that the people in Shangdong always describe the two handles of their frying pan as “ears”. He immediately tried to stop the man from advancing towards the lake. However, the man didn’t understand his intention. He pushed the elderly priest to the ground and even kicked him before he eventually left the lake. Though the priest was kicked, he felt very happy as he had saved the life of the man with four ears.
.
At this point, I would like to pause and ask, “If you were the elderly priest and the person you were trying to save kicked and hit you, would your heart be broad enough to want to continue saving this person?”
.
Moral of the story: Only someone who is compassionate and selfless would save others without harboring any hope of return. He will persist even if the person he is trying to save misunderstands him. It takes a broadminded person to do what the priest did.
.
On this coming Saturday, let us discuss “Progress towards Enlightenment” and how we can apply our wisdom and capability to help all people and at the same time elevate our spiritual growth.
