大暑──恬淡平和,安度苦夏。

大暑,代表一年中最炎熱時期到來了,是夏季的最後一個節氣,太陽到達黃經120°,今年是在陽曆7月22日。

大暑前後不但氣溫達到一年中的最高,悶熱程度也達到頂峰,中醫認為此時是濕氣最重的時候,容易出現食欲下降、口舌生瘡、腹瀉嘔吐、大便黏膩等症狀,所以此時養生要注意「避濕」。有幾種方式可以達到「避濕」的作用:一是適當鍛煉,使身體時常排汗,加速濕氣排出體外。二是不要貪涼睡地板,因為空氣中的水分和空調冷氣會自動沉降在低處,睡地板容易造成濕邪入侵。三是少吃冰的冷飲,以免影響腸胃消化吸收功能,降低免疫力。

大暑高溫酷熱,人容易動肝火,時常會出現莫名的無精打采、心煩意亂的情緒。唐朝大詩人白居易在《銷夏》詩中就寫到:「何以銷煩暑,端居一院中。眼前無長物,窗下有清風。熱散由心靜,涼生為室空。此時身自得,難更與人同。」意思是說,住在蔭涼的院子裡,屋裡少放一些雜七雜八的東西,打開窗戶,納來徐徐涼風,把心放平和,靜靜地體會「心靜自然涼」的意境,這是不是有點像菩提禪修的《清淨觀想法》呢?

當煩躁的情緒出現時,不妨嘗試修習《清淨觀想法》,藉由觀想讓我們能在這大暑時節享受那份清淨與自在。

“Major Heat” ── Tranquil and Peaceful Mindset is the Remedy for “Major Heat” in Summer

The “Major Heat” represents the hottest period of the year. It is the summer’s last solar term, when the sun reaches 120° on the celestial longitude. This year, it falls on July 22 in the Gregorian calendar.

Around this “Major Heat” period, temperature and humidity reach the peak for the year. Chinese doctors believe this is the time when it is most “damp” resulting in symptoms such as loss of appetite, mouth sores, diarrhea, vomiting, and sticky stools, etc. Therefore, one should “avoid dampness” to maintain good health. Some of the ways to do so includes: First, engage in suitable exercise to allow perspiration to expel “dampness” from the body. Second, avoid lying on the cold ground as moisture in the cold air and air from the air-conditioning system will automatically sink and settle near the ground, resulting in “dampness” that could enter the body. Third, consume less cold drinks, so as not to affect digestion and the gastrointestinal functions that reduce immunity.

During the “Major Heat”, it is easy for tempers to flare, and often there are inexplicable listless-ness, frustration and sense of distraction. The Tang Dynasty great poet, Bai Juyi in his “Experience Summer” poem wrote, “allay the summer lethargy, stay in a courtyard; ensure no clutter in your sight, let in the breeze by the window; dispel the heat with tranquility of the mind, enjoy serenity in a spartan room; relish this instance, with a wholly different mindset”. It suggests that one stays at a shady courtyard, keeps the house uncluttered, opens the windows to the soothing cool breeze, settles the mind at ease and quietude, then peacefully revel in the tranquility that a calm mind brings. Doesn’t this resembles our practice of the Meditation of Purity in Bodhi Meditation?

When the irritable mood manifests, we can practice the Meditation of Purity. Through its visualizations, we would relish the tranquility, and be at ease to appreciate this “Major Heat”.

A Miracle for chronic insomnia, within 3 days.

Insomnia refers to poor quality sleep disorder, prevalent amongst city dwellers. Although it is not life threatening, it can lead to mental breakdown and affects the ability to lead a normal life.

Prolonged insomnia may cause illnesses or aggravates existing health conditions like short temper, depression, poor memory, giddiness and tinnitus, high blood pressure, dry eyes, irritation, vulnerable to fever and flu, heart palpitations, body aches, hair loss, even obesity, etc.

Shuyin Chen suffered from chronic insomnia for the past 10 years. She was tormented by restless sleep and had difficulty falling asleep. For the first time in 10 years, she experiences the joy of waking up naturally. Her happiness is obvious to all who sees her.

My chronic insomnia of 10 years dissipated after practicing Bodhi
Meditation.

My name is Shuyin Chen and I am 48 years old.
I suffered from chronic insomnia for the past 10 years.
Every night, I would feel very exhausted by 7pm and would need a short nap to rest.
Normally, I would be awakened before 8pm and thought I had slept for a very long time.
My sleeping problem worsened in March last year.
I would lie in bed the whole night, tossing and turning, till dawn.

I cannot be caught wet in the rain.
This inability to be exposed to rain affected me since more than 15 years
ago.
Not even a light drizzle ….
If I got wet from the rain, I would suffer from headaches, followed by flu-like
symptoms. I would feel very hot suddenly and the next moment, very cold.
During such period,
I would wrap myself like a mummy at home;
layered with sweaters, long pants and socks,
covered under a blanket in bed.
As a result, my husband did not want to sleep in the same room as me.

I knew Bodhi Meditation from my cousin who joined in the last few months of 2015.
I came to try Energy Bagua for a day and felt my sleep pattern improved after that.
Hence, I signed up for the 8.5-day Health & Happiness Retreat on 24th December.
During these 8.5 days, my body became warm and I discovered that I was not so sensitive to cold.
When I practiced “The Meditation of Greater Illumination”, my body started perspiring.
During the wheel mudra, when I circled my hands around my stomach, I continued to sweat.
Towards the end of the practice, while breathing in and out,
the wind in my stomach was dispelled from my body.
This went on for some time.
By the end of “Ah Mi Te”,
I felt energetic.
Since then, I practice daily “The Meditation of Greater Illumination” at home.
When I am in a rush for time, I practice once, the 30-minute version. If I have time, I practice 2 sessions followed by “The Meditation of Purity”.
My entire body felt comfortable and relaxed by the third day of my class.
A miracle happened – I managed to sleep well for one whole night!
And I was able to fall asleep shortly upon going to bed…. like within 30 minutes, I was asleep deeply.
Now, I sleep well, wake up naturally and feel very fresh upon waking up.

Finally being able to sleep till I wake up naturally, after 10 years, makes me very happy indeed.
It is, as if, I had found something dear that I lost.
I can finally experience what others feel!
I am really very happy!

My friend commented I look much better and more radiant.Perhaps I was too pale previously.
I told him I go to Bodhi Meditation, to learn and practice meditation.
I can now lead a normal life and my family is also becoming more harmonious.
My husband no longer sleeps in the living room now.
Bodhi Meditation brings me good health and happiness.
My spirits are high.

現代人工作壓力大,常有失眠的困擾,嚴重干擾睡眠品質,甚至影響日常作息,再加上經常使用手機與電腦,青光眼也成為了現代人的文明病之一。他走了兩個月的「八卦」就讓失眠的問題消失,再持續堅持天天走「八卦」,眼睛的問題也逐漸改善,他是怎麼恢復健康的呢?一起來看看他的故事吧。

來自馬來西亞- 陳銘康的禪修故事
.
我從2005年開始失眠,每個星期至少有2次要到淩晨4-5點鐘才能入眠,其餘的時間都是淩晨2-3點鐘醒來後就無法入眠了,因怕藥物的副作用,所以我一直沒有服用安眠藥。失眠嚴重影響了我的工作和生活,因為白天沒有精神。

2015年3月,我的眼睛一到晚上看東西就會非常模糊,而且情況越來越嚴重。同年6月份醫生確診我患有青光眼,眼壓達到28mmHg,醫生即刻幫我做了雷射治療,但也只能降到20mmHg(注:眼壓正常值是10-21 mmHg,但醫生說我這種狀況要降到15mmHg以下才算恢復正常)。醫生給我配了眼藥水,同時告訴我眼藥水不一定能控制住眼壓的上升,嚴重的話一定要動手術,但動手術有50%的風險,如果不做手術就可能瞎掉。

2016年7月,我晨練時看到很多人繞樹走「八卦」,懷著好奇心我也就跟著大家一起走,每天堅持走1個小時。2個月後,我的失眠消失了,每晚10點多鐘一躺下就能入睡,一直睡到早上6點鐘才起床。這讓我白天工作時精力充沛,信心十足。同年11月,我到醫院複查,眼壓竟然降到了17mmHg;今年(2017年)年初,眼壓降到了16mmHg;4月29日再次複查,眼壓竟然降到了13mmHg,我的眼壓恢復了正常!同時眼睛看東西也變得清晰了,連醫生也為我感到高興。

除了身體上的收益,我的性格也改變了。幾十年來,我一直是一個很內向的人,不喜歡跟人溝通,每天都活在自己的世界裡,「八卦」點的人都叫我Mr.酷(酷先生)。 2017年3月我走進菩提禪修健身班,我開始變得開朗,喜歡接觸人了,對他人沒有排斥感了,而且我會把好的東西分享給大家,這在之前是從來沒有過的。

Energy Bagua practice has taken away my Insomnia and Glaucoma

These days, working people are immensely stressed, often leading to insomnia, with poor quality sleep that adversely affect daily routine.

With the regular use of mobile phones and computers, glaucoma has also become one of the common diseases of modernization.

This student practiced Energy Bagua for two months, and the insomnia problem disappeared. Persevering with daily practice of the Energy Bagua, his eye problem gradually improved. How did he restore his health? Let’s review his story.

Meditation Journal – Malaysia’s Mingkang Chen

I began having insomnia in 2005. Every week, there would be at least 2 nights that I could only fall asleep at 4 – 5 o’clock in the morning. For those other nights, I would rise at 2 or 3 o’clock in the wee hours of the morning and not be able to sleep again. As I was concerned about the side effects of medication, I did not take sleeping pills. Insomnia has seriously affected my work and life because of the lack of vitality during the day.

In March 2015, my eyesight was blur at night and it gradually deteriorated. In June that year, the doctor diagnosed me with glaucoma, with intraocular pressure (IOP) as high as 28mmHg. He performed an urgent laser treatment on me, but only eased the pressure to 20mmHg (Note: Normal IOP ranges 10 – 21 mmHg; for me, the doctor advised a reduction to 15mmHg to be considered normal). The doctor further prescribed eye drops and told me that it may not necessarily decrease the pressure, and if the condition worsens, I would need an eye operation. Despite the risk of failure at 50%, I could go blind if I chose to forego the operation.

In July 2016, during my morning exercises, I noticed several people walking encircling the trees as they practiced Energy Bagua. Out of curiosity, I joined them, persevering in the daily hour-long practice. Within 2 months, my insomnia disappeared, and at 10pm every evening, I could ease into sleep till 6am in the morning. This provides me with great vitality and confidence at work during daytime. That November, the IOP had unexpectedly dropped to 17mmHg during my medical review; early this year (2017), the IOP had dropped to 16mmHg; and by April 29th, to 13mmHg – my IOP has been restored to normal! At the same time, my eyesight is much clearer. Even the doctor is happy for me.

Besides the physical health benefits, my character has also improved. For decades, I had been an introvert; not keen to interact and essentially living in my own space. I was known as “Mr. Cool” by my Energy Bagua team. In March 2017, since I participated in Bodhi Meditation retreat, I’d become more cheerful, and prefer to mingle with people. I no longer fear rejection, and will share the good stuff with people – something I’d never experienced or done before.

As I continue to participate intently in Grandmaster JinBodhi’s Dharma talks, I understand more on the nature of compassion. Compassion for me, must be practiced at all times.

傳說慈悲能使人無所不能?
還能給人帶來一切財富?

曾經在中國,有個小夥子想發財,跟嶗山的一個老師父學習穿牆過壁。師父為了磨他的心,先讓他幹三年苦活。
.
三年期滿,小夥子實在忍不住了:「師父,我就沖這一招來的,您就教給我吧。」
師父說:「好吧,那我就教給你。」

師父臨走前再三叮囑小夥子:「不能用這個功夫做壞事,否則功夫會失靈。」小夥子答應了。
結果他回家之後想,熬了三年,我好不容易學到這功夫,不想發財才是呆子呢,到大戶人家偷錢去吧!

結果,因為有了偷盜的行為,穿牆過壁的法術就失靈,出不來了,小夥子叫人給抓個正著,不僅沒發財,還吃了幾年牢飯。

所以,真正的財富雖然也包含錢財,但是,僅僅留下錢財就等於留下了禍害。
.
想想,我們將來留給子女,後代最大的福分究竟是什麼?

According to legend, compassion makes one omnipotence?
And may even brings forth wealth?

There was a young man in China who wanted to become rich, hence he learnt from a Master on Mount Lao the skill of going through walls. The Master instructed him to do 3 years of laborious work as part of his training.

After 3 years, the young man could not endure further and thus asked his Master: “Master, I came here just for this skill of going through walls, please teach me.” His master agreed.
Before he left, his Master repeatedly remind the young man: ” Do not use the skill to do bad deeds, otherwise the skill will be lost.” The young man agreed.
After he reached home, he thought to himself, I went through 3 years of hardship in order to learn the skill. I will be an idiot if I do not use this skill to acquire some wealth. I shall break into a rich man’s house and steal from him!”

Since he applied his skill to perform bad deeds, he lost his skill and was trapped inside the house. As a result, he was caught in the act. Not only did he not get rich, he was jailed.

Therefore, real wealth encompasses money, however if we only go after money, that will ultimately lead to our own downfall.

曾經在中國,有個小夥子想發財,跟嶗山的一個老師父學習穿牆過壁。師父為了磨他的心,先讓他幹三年苦活。
.
三年期滿,小夥子實在忍不住了:「師父,我就沖這一招來的,您就教給我吧。」
師父說:「好吧,那我就教給你。」

師父臨走前再三叮囑小夥子:「不能用這個功夫做壞事,否則功夫會失靈。」小夥子答應了。
結果他回家之後想,熬了三年,我好不容易學到這功夫,不想發財才是呆子呢,到大戶人家偷錢去吧!

結果,因為有了偷盜的行為,穿牆過壁的法術就失靈,出不來了,小夥子叫人給抓個正著,不僅沒發財,還吃了幾年牢飯。

所以,真正的財富雖然也包含錢財,但是,僅僅留下錢財就等於留下了禍害。
.
想想,我們將來留給子女,後代最大的福分究竟是什麼?

According to legend, compassion makes one omnipotence?
And may even brings forth wealth?

There was a young man in China who wanted to become rich, hence he learnt from a Master on Mount Lao the skill of going through walls. The Master instructed him to do 3 years of laborious work as part of his training.

After 3 years, the young man could not endure further and thus asked his Master: “Master, I came here just for this skill of going through walls, please teach me.” His master agreed.
Before he left, his Master repeatedly remind the young man: ” Do not use the skill to do bad deeds, otherwise the skill will be lost.” The young man agreed.
After he reached home, he thought to himself, I went through 3 years of hardship in order to learn the skill. I will be an idiot if I do not use this skill to acquire some wealth. I shall break into a rich man’s house and steal from him!”

Since he applied his skill to perform bad deeds, he lost his skill and was trapped inside the house. As a result, he was caught in the act. Not only did he not get rich, he was jailed.

Therefore, real wealth encompasses money, however if we only go after money, that will ultimately lead to our own downfall.

曾有3年的時間,他每天睡1個小時就要醒來,而短短3天的健身班課程,便讓他酣然入睡4個小時。

他也曾患有兩年的尿管結石,嘗試了多種治療方法,都未見效,而在健身班的第4天,他便輕鬆排出了結石。

Congratulations to this Malaysian gentleman – Fuwen Liao – for sharing his health journal.

In the past, for 3 years, he would wake up daily after only 1 hour of sleep. After a mere 3 days at the Health and Happiness Retreat, he could sleep continuously for 4 hours.

He also suffered from two years of ureteral calculi (stones), and had tried a variety of treatments, which were not effective. Yet, during the 4th day of the Retreat, he easily excreted the ureteral stone.

I am Fuwen Liao and live in Ampang. I do furniture carpentry work.
Before, I could only sleep an hour every night and would wake up and stay awake, unable to fall asleep again and this went on for 3 years.

When I started practicing the Meditation of Greater Illumination and the Meditation of Purity, my whole body ached. I persevered on with the practices and after 3 days, I sensed some transformation. I slept for a stretch of 4 hours that night.

Two years ago, I was actually diagnosed with stones in the ureter and insomnia.
On the 4th day of the Health and Happiness Retreat, I continued to practice diligently. I experienced pain in my abdominal area. That afternoon, I felt discomfort and pain when I urinated.
After that I continued practicing for 4 consecutive sessions of meditation. That evening when I went home, I was surprised when I felt a grain being passed out while showering.
The grain fell to the floor and being curious, I washed the grain and examined it. It seemed hard and I kept it.
My son said it was a stone and my daughter searched the Internet for an answer.
Was it (related to) my ureteral calculi? It was! I was elated as the ureteral stone was discharged from my body.
I returned to share my experience with the Teachers at the Retreat,
“It’s so amazing”, I told them. The results are apparent within four to five days.
I’d been searching for two years, seeing different doctors and taking medication but to no avail. I’d tried many treatment, but they were not effective. Now, with this meditation practice which I learnt during the 8.5 -day Health and Happiness Retreat, I witnessed positive results in just 4 days, My back and spinal aches have also vanished
As I practiced till the 7th and 8th day, my sleep duration increase to 6 hours.
I have deep gratitude to my Grandmaster JinBodhi for the recovery.

I am also more outspoken now. When I first came, I spoke little, as I was afraid. I’m more cheerful now, right? I just feel so happy!

好好修行,我們的皮膚會變得很光滑、手掌開始變厚。手指下頭幾個地方會鼓起肉包來,這叫什麼呢?手心凹下去的地方叫做壽海、鼓起來的地方叫福山。所以叫「福山壽海」。

長一張好臉不如有雙好手,手上有福氣才是真的。手柔軟有彈性,手掌的顏色是健康的、好看的,對著光一照還閃光,看起來滋潤,聞起來還不臭,好好修還是香的。手心修的越來越低,旁邊的肉鼓得越來越高,這就是福山壽海,有這個手相的人一看就是大富大貴。

還有一個現象:手掌的皮膚上有像雪花一樣的斑點。這就是修行在改變你整個的生命,你的肉體在發生改變。對於這些變化,有的人有感覺,有的人沒有感覺,修的時候你的身體感受比較多,手容易發麻、發熱、能量感比較明顯。

Take a look at your palm and see how fortunate are you?

When we practice Buddhadharma well, we will realize that our complexions become more radiant and our palms become thicker. The part of our palm that joins the fingers may be fuller and bulging with more flesh than the center of our palm. These bumps of flesh on your palm resembles Mountain of Good Fortune, and the concave part at the center of the palm resembles Sea of Longevity. Therefore, we can refer them as “Mountain of Good Fortune and Sea of Longevity”

Having a pair of good hands may be preferred over good looks on the face. The elements of prosperity and good fortune are apparently embedded in the hands. Look for palms that are soft and tender, healthily colored, moisturized, nourished, sometimes even radiating a pleasant smell. When one practices Buddhadharma well, the concave at the center of the palm can become more noticeable as the palm becomes more fleshy and thicker. In palmistry, this signifies Good Fortune and Longevity, so when you see such a palm, you can easily tell that this person definitely enjoys good fortune and luck.

Another phenomenon: snowflakes-like marks on your palm. These changes in your body are results from the practice of Buddhadharma, which is believed to represent a coming change in your destiny. One may or may not be able to notice these changes. However, changes in the body can be felt more during practice, such as the hands may occasionally feel numb or warm, or the feeling of energy flow can also be quite obvious.

With diligence in practicing Buddhadharma, you will observe the changes in your palms. You will be blessed with richness in Good Fortune and Longevity that Buddha has bestowed upon you. Sincere singing of chants and praises to the Buddha, and acts of compassion will also help to bring these changes. Our improved health and increased wisdom is a direct result from our positive and right thoughts and behavior during our daily practices of Buddhism. In this manner, we will cultivate a heart of great compassion and kindness, love and generosity.

我們平時所說的「三伏天」、「暑伏(數伏)」,是一年中最熱的時節,每年夏至後第3個「庚」日開始進入伏天,因此三伏中的頭伏就落在小暑節氣裡。今年小暑落在陽曆7月7日。此時中國南方地區的梅雨季節即將結束,盛夏開始,氣溫升高,進入伏旱期;北方則進入高溫多雨季節。
.
「冬練三九、夏練三伏」,在酷夏裡進行鍛煉,與天時變化和陰陽轉運相應,提高人的耐熱能力,可以使肌體能更適應自然氣候,從而達到防病、健體的目的。在這30天的暑伏裡,選擇一個修行的項目,大禮拜或者八卦都可以,堅持每天練最少一個小時,30天之後,相信你的陽氣一定會大大增強。

Exercise to Greater Health in Summer
The “Three Hottest Periods” or “Summer Heat” – these are common phrases that refer to the hottest times of the year. One occurs after the third heavenly stem (or about 21 days) from the summer solstice. The core of the “Three Hottest Periods” lies in the summer season. This year, the hottest summer day falls on July 7th on the Gregorian calendar. Around this time, the rainy season in southern China is about to end, heading into the intense summer with rising temperatures marking the hot, dry period; whereas the north starts experiencing a hot, rainy season.
As the saying goes, “practice in the depths of winter; practice at the height of summer”. When one practices in the intense summer heat, engaging the climatic changes and interacting with the evolving yin-and-yang, it enhances the bodily functions with benefits to heat regulation, adaptation to climatic changes, and ultimately to robust immunity and fitness.
In this 30-day summer season, choose a relevant meditative practice, such as the Full Prostration or the Energy Bagua, and persevere in a daily practice of at least an hour each time. Within 30 days, I trust you’ll experience bountiful positive energy.

When one practices in the intense summer heat, engaging the climatic changes and interacting with the evolving yin-and-yang, it enhances the bodily functions with benefits to heat regulation, adaptation to climatic changes, and ultimately to robust immunity and fitness.
